with the amount of money these festivals are paying out to bands these days i think its fair to say no band will ever truly be "done" anymore

yeah until every original member or member that played with an original member is dead or smth. I feel like Dave Lombardo is 100% done with Slayer, but I could imagine him doing a tour branded "Dave Lombardo's Slayer" at some point

Do they really earn that much money by appearing on a festival? From what I've heard most bands don't but I guess it might be different for a band of this status.

i'm mostly basing this off of greg or ben from dillinger saying they've received six figure offers to come back and play festivals since breaking up and if dillinger (who would be mid tier band at most these festivals) is being offered that much i can only imagine what slayer, a legitimate headliner, is getting paid for this.

i think the festival's idea is fans of these broken up bands will come out in droves to see these bands perform for one last time, even if it means flying in from different states or countries.

someone threw money at them and they saw how successful panteras semi reunion has been

for reference, last years riot fest headliners were:

friday: foo fighters / turnstile
saturday: the postal service / death cab for cutie / qotsa
sunday: the cure / the mars volta

i would estimate slayer would be a bigger draw than all of those bands besides the foo fighters, not even including the fact they've been disbanded for half a decade. the cure are obv "bigger" but slayer's fanbase prob slants much younger on average + more willing to attend a three day festival like this

Damn that's pretty wild if true Alex, never expected that kind of numbers

yeah but it makes sense though cause a) like you said, most bands really aren't making any money doing these and b) these festivals charge like $250+ per day per tens of thousands of people (not to mention all the sponsors etc.) so they can easily afford it. they'll shell out the big bucks for bands who they think will draw people but nothing more than that.

Read somewhere that Tom was the only one holding this up, and then finally gave in.

Kinda weird, cause like a week ago I’m pretty sure King was blasting Tom in an interview. Stage is probably gonna be a little bit awkward.

They're on the same ticket as Motley Crue, which totally tracks.

Also, LTL's headliners are such dogshit that it makes a washed-out band on a moneygrab more appealing.

the articles talking about how Tom's wife talked him into it just reminds me of whatshisname's story on here about driving up to Tom's home/ranch(?) and getting threatened by her lol.

King just trying to drum up drama to push his new album is my guess. Plus, I'm pretty sure every member of Slayer dislikes one another personally but pulls their shit together to perform and get paid.

I finally checked out Slayer as a result of already having Riot Fest tickets. Have never listened to them other than when I saw them live at their last final performance at Riot Fest in 2019.

They are great. I have always been a big Megadeth fan and Slayer isn't really all that far off other than being a bit speedier and rough around the edges. Less emphasis on groove and melody and more on playing fast and hard.

Funny to see that their albums also have the classic 90s slump and 00s resurgence that Megadeth and Metallica saw.
