There are also practical reasons for doing this.
They can't play the album live without damaging themselves financially, because the royalties belong to someone else.

Paradise Lost have been on a winning streak lately, could be good. I wonder how many of these rerecordings are due to rights issues.
|
| |
Tentatively excited.

"They can't play the album live without damaging themselves financially, because the royalties belong to someone else."
holy shit. is this true?
|
| |
There are definitely performance based rights.
|
| |
So they are working on a new one and re-recording Icon? Holy f

It's an interesting time in music because a lot of 80s/early 90s underground records by now big acts have shown their age in their production quality, so giving them a re-recording with a modern polish would help introduce newer fans to their older material. Yes the purists will hate it but these artists aren't deleting the old versions so they can still listen to them, but newer fans and those who prefer music not recorded with a potato can enjoy these old songs all over again.
I also want Rabbit Junk/The Named (whichever name JP Anderson chooses to use) to re-record the Shizit classic Soundtrack for the Revolution because that one hasn't aged well production wise either.

The sludgy sound work in Tragic Idol could be translated to Icon, in any case let's wait and see.

“There are definitely performance based rights.”
How did it get to that though? Haha crazy, bad deal that.

^^I remember Mackintosh saying that when their label at the time, Music for Nations, dissolved, Paradise Lost back catalogue was sold to different parties, and that’s how Icon ended up out of the band’s reins.
Most likely, Paradise Lost had little, if none, say during those transactions.
Edit:
This is the interview where Mackintosh tells the story

Icon is so good, curious about this

Icon (Paradise Lost's Version)
|
| |
@voivod
Man, I can’t imagine how frustrating that would be. Labels suck.
|
| |
Icon is far from my favourite PL album, but I’ll def check it out.
|
| |
Embers fire is just so damned good.
|
| |
Not my favorite Paradise Lost album but still pretty cool
|
| |
They could re-record all their 90s albums. That would be great.

Due to a site glitch and me trying to erase duplicates of the latest comment submitted in this thread, the original comment was deleted as well. I regret the error and the user who wrote it, can submit it anew. The comment mentioned that the sound work of Tragic Idol is not a good choice for the re-recorded Icon, as the sound volume of the former album was over the top.
In response, I posit that that's why I used the word "translated" and not "copied" about the sound work.

^^Social media zeitgeist right there :-P

That's not nice, Flugmorph. C'mon
|

we like to do a lil jest around here
|

I was going to write that Flugmorph was joking, but dude made it before I do.
|
| |
love you all
|

Damn it
|

I like nice production. I’m not above old albums being re-recorded if done well. Here for this.
|
| |
Interesting. I do like how most of their newer albums sound, but at the same time the original's production contributed to its unique character and atmosphere.
|
| |
Sounds like an excellent idea, band is awesome
