Thrice rediscover music

2021-07-20 by _well STAFF | 175 Comments
The post-cryptoevangelical alternative post-post-hardcore Californian rock band THRICE have announced a new album. It is called Horizons/East and you can listen to it legally on September 17th. Pre-orders are available here for those who pre-order things https://thrice.ffm.to/store.

This is exciting news because THRICE topped the Sputnikmusic user poll for Album Of The Decade 2000-2009 with their album Vheissu, the apparent TPAB of cryptoevangelical '00s post-hardcore. It is also not so exciting news because their last album, 2018's Palms was a mediocre slew of departures that didn't arrive anywhere and rockers that didn't rock. Sputnikmusic Staff Reviewer Sowing[s]Season[/s] described Palms as "well worth enduring a few ear-grating minutes" and "willing to vary the tempo", while recently reclusive user Larkinhill coined it as "just boring". I have never seen anyone post anything positive about its artwork.

The artwork of Horizons/East is also far from great, but it does fuck with a tipsy perspective - so much so that some will posit the band to have regained their claws. This impression is supported by the single "Scavengers", which is both a pretty solid tune and one of the heavier things THRICE have released since their hiatus. What I mean by this is that it contains both chorus harmonies and a breakdown, and both these things are good in a way that sounds like THRICE doing things they are good at. So that's a relief.

Please listen to "Scavengers" here and post your incorrect takes about the career and future and legacy of the band Thrice underneath. The best THRICE albums are still The Artist In The Ambulance and The Illusion Of Safety and this will never change (once a 4 you're nothing more sorry Vheissu). Please enjoy.

I just googled thrice and the second thing to come up was a kerrang article about the new thrice and it actually had some good info about the new album that can actually inform us about the shape of the albums purpose and being.

“It was self-produced and recorded at the band’s own New Grass Studio, and mixed by Scott Evans.

A taste of the 10-track release has arrived today with lead single Scavengers – a song that frontman Dustin Kensrue cryptically refers to as touching on “toxic worldviews I once inhabited” where “a lot of people that I love are still in that place”.

A press release, meanwhile, describes the album as a whole as conveying a “palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility”, while also being the “soundtrack for deeper dreaming”.”

This is certainly a Thrice song and that is certainly Thrice artwork. It sounds slightly better than the last two albums but they set the bar so low with their post-hiatus work that almost anything better than "bad/mediocre" would be an improvement at this point. Illusion of Safety was a pretty huge album in the scene when it dropped. Deadbolt was everywhere.

"there was always a lot of discussion about Thrice as a Christian band, even if they were technically labelled as a band who dealt with Christian themes or whatever. search for Kensrue interviews on faith"

A lot of lyrics are straight out of the Bible and Dustin went on to be a worship leader and also released a worship album. They never marketed themselves as such, but the influences were pretty overt.

The problem isn't the music, but rather the lyrical content. Even in the original post hardcore phase there was always something interesting lyrically that elevated it above other bands, often linking to philosophy, a unique interpretation of contemporary society and politics or more often than not through a lens of faith.

Since Dustin's Mars Hill experience in the hiatus though, he's come through the other side without a solid lyrical grounding in his writing. Pre hiatus Thrice would never stoop to "no we're not going to sit in the dark any more" or "I will find you in the darkness" which is such a shame. Deeper Wells EP got back some of that lyrical vibe but Scavengers completely throws that out the window for "heavy Dad rock" vibes, which is fine, but it's just not Thrice.

His lyrics deeeefinitely took a nose dive after the hiatus, though he's still capable of writing some genuinely great passages here and there. The chorus lyrics to Beyond the Pines are great imo.

Honestly the lyrics here don't bug me as much as his usual output of the last few years has. Nothing spectacular but at least he's not yelling "We gotta wake up" over and over again.

"His lyrics deeeefinitely took a nose dive after the hiatus, though he's still capable of writing some genuinely great passages here and there. The chorus lyrics to Beyond the Pines are great imo."

it says a lot that those lyrics are an adaptation of a Rumi poem and they're his best in years lol

70% of Thrice's music is some of the most tedious music in rock. I'll take Illusion, Vheissu and maybe M/M and I'm good.

M/M has the lion's share of their most tedious pre-hiatus music and would be one of their worst if it weren't for the last two tracks

I love the grunge-y sound and love basically every track (save for Blur and Listen Through Me). One of their most consistent albums.

kinda echo johnnys feelings on m/m. for the most part its a very dull record that narrowly avoids the bottom 3 (both reunion albums and identity crisis) off of the strength of its closing duo

"I need to find a different place to get my music news."

genuine question re. you and everyone else malding itt: was sput ever a primary source of news for you and what are your expectations for articles beyond regurgitating the core fibers of whatever press statements are all over the internet 2-3 days before whichever article goes up?

Honestly, I think Sput's news should feature humour and commentary more often. Sput is never going to compete with other outlets for 'professionalism'. I think it should lean into its scrappy, rogue brand.

"oh gosh this is gonna be the Thrice version of Erase Me"

That sentence made me both laugh and feel sad at the same time.

This post is annoying as fuck honestly. Major/Minor onward is way better music from Thrice than the Illusion of Safety and reading yet another person say that they've never been as good as their first two albums is so overdone.

This didn't strike me as particularly great. It's fine, but I felt the singles for Palms were better than this song.

Only Us was the only decent Palms single and it never kicked into gear the same way as this does after like 3 hours of grunge buffering

Not malding, I’m just too positive a person for the kind of childish negativity here.
I used to like coming here for news. Maybe it was always this bad, and I’m just tired. I don’t know.

I’m not even a fan of this song, really. Just… this isn’t my kinda attitude.

Eddie and Riley killing it as always but maaaan, Dustin just sounds bored / unengaged and Teps forgot how to riff. The main riff is seriously just lazy as fuck, and hearing him trash his earlier guitar playing (when he was consistently interesting and engaging) in interviews in favor of the newer post-grunge "it's got FEEL" stuff makes me wonder if his ears still work

im someone who also doesn't necessarily vibe with the tone of the community conversations here but just imagining everyone says the things they do while in good humour helps a little bit. like i find crass differing opinions on music of all things to be quite funny. but yeah the allegations threads are bit beyond for me. still regretting my cringe name though.
