Ryuichi Sakamoto diagnosed with cancer 2021-01-22 by Hugh G. Puddles STAFF | 23 Comments | The legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has been diagnosed with cancer for a second time, as revealed in an open letter viewable on his personal website. In the same letter, he pays tributes to the efforts of healthcare workers and pledges to maintain his contributions to outgoing projects wherever he is able.
Sakamoto, aged 69, was previously diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, which saw him take a year away from music while undergoing a painful treatment process. His only solo record since this time, the critically acclaimed async, confronted themes of mortality, humanity and disconnection in a frequently jarring and unsettlingly personal showcase of innovative techniques and unsettling dissonance.
Sakomoto has maintained a prolific and highly influential career since the seventies, as a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, as an Oscar-winning film composer, as an actor co-starring alongside David Bowie in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), through his own solo output, and a vast list of collaborations and production credits with artists of varying styles. His recent output has included the soundtracks for 2019's Proxima and 2020's The Staggering Girl, two live albums with Alva Noto in 2018 and 2019, and extensive involvement in Kazu Makino's 2019 solo debut Adult Baby.

Awful news, hope he pulls through smoothly and swiftly. Fuck cancer.
| | | Man is a legend, sucks that cancer hit him again dude fuck cancer
| | | nooooooo nooo no no no
sending positive energy, really hope he'll be okay
| | | what the fuck man
| | | fuck cancer [3]
| | | Fucking terrible, hope he pulls through again and doesn't have to deal with a third
| | | He still has years of music ahead oh him. Don't take this one from us, fucking cancer.
| | | all this cancer hate is absolutely disgusting
cancer deserves love too
| | | holy shit though, I don't think I know this guy, but that's a mighty fine discog he's got going
where do I start?
| | | I've barely scratched the surface of his discog, but Thousand Knives Of is awesome and definitely a good start point
Gonna check Chasm soon
| | | i find it hard to come to grips with the fact that we're now approaching a time period when any one of the YMO members will no longer be around. all three of them have been such vital fixtures in Japanese music for the past 40+ years, consistently and relentlessly pumping out great music and doing wonderful live performances, and all three of them have done some of the best work of their careers in the past decade (async, METAFIVE, Hochono House, etc.). even tho YMO effectively ended so long ago, it never really felt like they went away cuz all three members have had such active and prominent careers individually, and they've done those reunion records and shows and TV appearances here and there; it's sad to think that that might soon be impossible.
| | | Yo Sharenge, watch the movie Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Sakamoto and David Bowie are both in it, and Sakamoto only agreed to do the role if he was also given free reign to compose the score. Movie's a masterpiece
| | | yeah I saw that he was in a movie with Bowie... I'll check it out haven't seen any Bowie films (well The Prestige, but his role in that isn't that large)
| | | Well. 2021 off to a not great start with this one.
| | | Hope he'll be fine. Cancer is terrible...
| | | That sucks. Wish you a good recovery, Sakamoto-sensei.
| | | Fuck cancer. Amazing composer, hope he pulls through.
| | | fuck cancer [7]
| | | I cried because nobody at first deserves to experience cancer, but to go through that process a second time is heartbreaking and hell for him. Can’t imagine with how much dread he is filled right now. He must be so dejected. I guess he’s too big of a genius so life trys to compensate that, even though it’s not fair. I pray 4 him to recover from this as good as possible somehow. I guess he has the benefit of fighting it once, so I wish him the best of luck and strength!
| | | Hoping for a miraculous full recovery. YMO is one of the greatest bands of all time.
| | | fuck cancer [8] async just became that little bit more brutal. Hope he can pull through again.
| | | absolute legend and my favorite living composer. hoping for a full recovery for sure.
| | | god dammit this fucking dilemma again...
so I'm checking out the movie that was recommended, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and only a few minutes in there is a lot of dialogue that is in Japanese... but no subtitles
is the movie not supposed to have subtitles for the Japanese dialogue, or am I just watching a copy that is missing them?
fuck me, this issue has cropped up way too many times in the past year...
