Releasing the opener AND the closer? There’s something I don’t like about that tbh
Digging: Frank Ocean - Blonde
Both this and Ohms bangs! 🔥🔥🔥
Yeah disregard my previous complaint cause the song fucks
This song rules as does ohms. Already better than gore lol I can't wait!
Song rules. Personally I liked it better than "Ohms".
this song fucks, holy shit
Digging: Sam Amidon - Sam Amidon
This is the best thing I’ve heard this band do since diamond eyes
better than ohms, song is great
So I heard this song fucks
This is the best thing I’ve heard this band do since saturday night wrist
this video needs a seizure warning, tbh
song is fine, but like most Deftones, I'd get bored of a whole album of this
If the whole album sounds like this I'm going to 5 it
death, taxes and sowing 5s
This song fucks so hard its kids fuck, holy shit
Digging: Julia - Julia
Now this is the kind of Deftones I was hoping to hear (not that the t/t wasn't good)
bringing unrestrained hype since 2008
but yeah, this song is seriously good and several tiers better than the t/t
Synths sound like early burzum doing ambient
Digging: HEALTH - DISCO4 :: Part I
This song fucks
I love how the album is out next week. They're not one of those scumbag bands that release a single a year in advance or whatever. You know those cocksuckers
Insta 5 the album
I already have Zeuzo : P
wait this comes out next week wtf
This song most definitely has consensual intercourse.
Holy crap, this album is gonna be a banger.
Damn this is really good
And they got Frank doing shit in the band now or is he still useless as ever?
Digging: Orgy - Vapor Transmission
Well, consider me hyped. I liked Ohms, but I didn't really feel like it went anywhere. It kind of just meandered to a close. This, on the other hand, well, like everyone said... this song fucks...
well, it sounds like Deftones.
"Well, consider me hyped. I liked Ohms, but I didn't really feel like it went anywhere. It kind of just meandered to a close."
I didn't really like Ohms for exactly what you described. It felt like a b-cut off any deftones album since WP
Song is very good
We finally have our answer for what KNY would've sounded like if Terry Date produced it.
And it sounds pretty good...
Colour me hyped
Digging: Wake - Confluence
Song bangs, album is shaping up very nicely.
Took me a few listens to start liking Ohms, but this one took only 40 seconds. Never should've had any doubts.
Idk. This just sounds like every other recent Deftones song to me.
Digging: Disturbed - Believe
this is very okay, not impressed. chino's harsh vox game is weak here.
Digging: Tricot - 10
You ever notice with a lot of Deftones songs, the chorus doesn't live up to the verses or vice versa?
In this case, I think the verses are much better than the chorus.
Scream game weak because of the weight loss. Diaphragm is much smaller now.
Chino's screams sound better than they have in years
siiiick song. way better than Ohms
Definitely better than Ohms, but neither song has left much of an impression. Just Deftones by the numbers, though I am still looking forward to listening to the full album.
Digging: Touche Amore - Lament
bloc is that a copypasta? i feel like ive seen that before.
chino bro my guy u do not have to scream anymore. pls
Digging: Wisp - NRTHNDR
Haha no way Flug, it was an original thought of mine. Would be nice to know someone out there feels the same as I though
Yeah Imma have to agree with all the Chino critiques here... his screams are kinda weak here and are being propped up by effects just like on Gore.
Tbh I think I prefer Ohms to this. Chino sounds so much more natural on that one.
this literally combines all of Deftones' best qualities, much better than Ohms
this song fucks
song fucks this
chinos screams have been weak to me since diamond eyes so thats not something i expect much out of anyway at this point
Digging: Lydia - Illuminate
He's certainly cant push his voice like he used to. His normal singing style is strain enough on his voice at this point I'd have to think.
His scream definitely showed wear and tear on Gore, but it sounds much better here.
Also I once again don't see the "sounds like everything else they've ever done" critique. Maybe I just have a bit more narrower view of what Deftones sounds like... but they haven't made anything that sounds quite like this either imo.
Sounds like they picked up right where they left off with Date on the S/T here (suffocating atmosphere, slow punishing riffs, etc.)... but with some new tricks they've learned since. Song is a straight hellscape... like if Battle-Axe was on KNY. They haven't made anything quite this heavy since Date.
Feeling some very strong Digital Bath/Change (In The House of Flies) vibes here. Song is much better than Ohms and Chino's screams even at 47 have not weakened at all.
I feel like everyone compares their songs to anything they've done before lol. Looks like these guys are quite samey.
Sounds great but song is just meh to me. I miss when they wrote hooks.
Digging: Junglepussy - JP4
Wtf Chino is 47???
I was just about to ask the same thing. Fr?
Digging: clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned
Digging: Wilmette - Wilmette- EP
Compare Chino to Maynard who can barely scream anymore and you'll see just how impressive his voice has remained throughout the years (even after having blown his vocal chords)
"his screams are kinda weak here and are being propped up by effects just like on Gore."
The only effects on his screaming come at around 1:45 and it's not to prop up his screams but it's this rather underwater-like effect that they have used multiple times before on songs such as MX for example.
this song fucks
definitely gives me Diamond Eyes vibes, this is EXACTLY what i wanted. i already know i’m going to 5 this
Many future children will be spilled to this album.
Yeah, into a sock.
Digging: Oklou - Galore
Why you gotta go and make it vulgar now
edit: lmaoooo pots
Well, at least two socks. Ya know, 'cause they cum in pairs.
Kinda boring dunno
Digging: Crippled Black Phoenix - Ellengaest
Nice like this one a bit more then the last one.
"The only effects on his screaming come at around 1:45 and it's not to prop up his screams but it's this rather underwater-like effect that they have used multiple times before on songs such as MX for example."
Nah there's def the same sorta reverb/light distortion filter on them that was on Gore. It's a bit dialed back this time around but it is most definitely there.
The underwater thing is def a cool call back to ATF though
Way better than Ohms. Love the Chino screams on this, sounds Hexagram-like.
you know what, this song kinda fucks
Song fucks for sure.
got my fresh walmart khaki shorts and crisp flame graphic short sleeve button up on ready to bump some Genesis by Deftones and do some fuckin'
song fucks dicks hard
I can offer another "holy shit this slams!" Into the conversation or I can offer a deep, thoughtful critique..... I'm gonna go with the former. Incredible song.
Digging: The Cure - Disintegration
gonna go grab 50¢ hamburgers and a shake down at the diner with Betty after the shindig and then go fuck to some deftones produced by terry date
This musical composition fornicates exponentially
These notes make my nether regions engorge to the point where I actually want to buy the physical album so I can take it into the wilderness to have it sit and spin on me as god intended.
my clitoris is in full chub
just the thought of splooshing this WAP to these chords makes my nipples bloat
WAP is actually a review of the new deftones album confirmed
What the fuck are you idiots doing itt?
building multi-layer friendships and fuccin'
this song sexes
Song tames some strange
"If the whole album sounds like this I'm going to 5 it"
sowing you 5 everything you idiot
Average rating: 1.12.
Snide fucking up my comment placement gdmit
this song fuckin fuckkkkkkssss and also slaps my dick
certified bop what a banger
I've only listened to like 20 seconds through my phone speakers but it definitely 100% fuck(ing suck)s
yea its lit
If you listen to a song, any song, through phone speakers you're first boat to GITMO no questions asked.
add in an exception clause for ashnikko and i cannot disagree with that thesis
I only listen to music through phone speakers as an active form of disrespect and thus it is limited to bands ghostb1rd enjoys
this is pretty slick considering how lame most of gore was
Digging: Chamber - Cost of Sacrifice
Not bad, they are always reaching for that intensity they had in their youth, never manage to recreate it.
Digging: Hundredth - Somewhere Nowhere
Eh. Based on these two tracks, it's like a 3/5 at best.
I don't think they're going to be getting better again until they stop meandering between writing songs for drugged up sex slaves and pandering with faux depth as generally as possible without really saying anything.
that’s literally their whole discog
Harder, Daddy Chino, Harder!!! I'm already giving this AOTY goddamnit!
This song fucks! It fucks me so hard with sound.
S O N G
F U C K S
Idk. It left me rather cold.
"that's literally their whole discog"
Damn... you're right.
I guess I just... Changed.
"writing songs for drugged up sex slaves"
"Not bad, they are always reaching for that intensity they had in their youth, never manage to recreate it."
Longest midlife crisis ever yeah. Worst part is that if they stopped trying to be PG-13 radio-ready diet wal-mart Meshuggah they might write their first good album since SNW
Truer words have never been spoken.
Imagine thinking SNW was their last good album.
If it weren't for their self-titled album, or Gore, it would be their worst album.
Surprised to see all the love for Ohms. I thought that song was super bland for Deftones. Just uninspired. This song on the other hand reminds me why this band is so good. Idk what ro expect from the rest of the album based on the two, but i definitely hope it's closer to this than Ohms
To be fair, their self-titled is leagues above KNY and DE.
Yeah diamond eyes and gore are irredeemable
"To be fair, their self-titled is leagues above KNY and DE."
Pikazilla I like all those albums about equally honestly. I don't know what leagues better is to you? I actually would rate the self titled as one of their weaker releases. I respect your opinion though. What is so much better about that album for you?
To put it briefly, song arrangements + riffs. S/t gets so much flak even though it has some of Carp's best axework.
Very true the riffs on that album were killer. I don't personally dislike any album from this band as a whole. Didn't really care for Gore all that much. I think that is something cool about this band is that they have made these albums that people can differ in opinion so much on. That is something special.
great song. the other one i didn't immediately recognise as deftones from the opening riff. both still cool though, def better than anything on the last one
Digging: Bring Me the Horizon - Post Human: Survival Horror
I thought both songs were fine, hoping to like em more in the album
The more I listen to this, the more I realize this album is gonna obliterate the absolute shit out of Gore.
KNY > s/t > DE
Only album I think that lacks would be Gore, because it's the only one I have to force myself to go back to, even if I like a few songs on it. DE is that way for me sometimes, but not always. Sextape, Rocket Skates, title track, and Risk redeem it for me. SNW has like a few tracks that don't need to be there, but Combat to Riviere alone makes it a favorite. KNY is prolly my fave release of theirs, tho. Not even a filler track on that record imo. Leathers, Tempest, Poltergeist, Entombed, Rosemary, Swerve City, Gauze, and What Happened to You? are all time favorites for me.
That being said, I'm prepared to have a new favorite Deftones record in a weeks time since Genesis might be tied with Be Quiet and Drive or Hexagram for my favorite track of theirs now.
decent opinions, I also think KNY is full of winners, but SNW is my fav deftones. the atmosphere and vibes on there are unmached.
Nice pick, SNW is as good as dreamy deftones get.
“To be fair, their self-titled is leagues above KNY and DE.“
This is a good take
Digging: Skudface - Not Now Mom, I'm at le Cinema
“Nice pick, SNW is as good as dreamy deftones get.”
It’s also as good as heavy Deftones gets, they don’t write heavy jams like Rapture or Rats!Rats!Rats! anymore. Really hoping for some off-kilter heavy shit on the new one
Eh, Chino's weight and drug problems around SNW made his scream kinda weak on it - he sounded a little too much like Cartman throwing a fit. The heavy parts on Royal, Prince, Leathers and this new one blow Rapture and Rats out of the water.
but his diaphragm was huge tho
If your diaphragm is huge you can do anything
“The heavy parts on Royal, Prince, Leathers and this new one blow Rapture and Rats out of the water.”
you’re on crack
Album is gonna rule
Digging: The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
The screams here are his best since Leathers
low bar to clear lol
Digging: Black Thought - Streams of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane and Abel
“The heavy parts on Royal, Prince, Leathers and this new one blow Rapture and Rats out of the water.”
you’re on crack
Rats and Hexagram have his best screams, we all know it
He's just not a good screamer tbh.
Also is the contention itt that being fat makes you sound weaker?
The end scream on Royal > every last Cartman scream on SNW...y'all the ones on that rock.
Listening to Ratsx3 right now and don't get me wrong, it's still a fun song (Abe goes HAM at the end), but his scream has been better elsewhere. And I can't speak for every singer, but in Chino's case, the two albums with the most winded sounding screams, SNW and Gore, just so happen to be when he was on the heavy side.
wrong again crackhead
His screams on SNW have always had a different "energy" behind them to me. Feels like more anger and frustration behind them. That's why SNW is one of my top 3 Deftones albums.
"wrong again crackhead"
So the end scream on Royal isn't good to you? Okay, basehead!
And don't get it twisted that I'm slagging off SNW as an album, obviously there are other elements that make it an excellent Deftones album. It's just not one of the albums that showcases his best screams.
His screams sound really bad on this song but it doesn't even really bother me because the song is so good
His best screams are Hexagram and it's not even close for me
Digging: Gulfer - Gulfer
be quiet and drive (fart away)
Of course it fucking SLAPS.
Digging: Crack Cloud - Pain Olympics
fuck you all, Diamond Eyes is their best album
this song is OK
After repeated listens, this really does feel like a synthesis of the classic Terry Date stuff and the post-Chi stuff (hate to use that term)
"I finally achieve balance"...damn right
love that the conclusion is that drugs and being a fat fuck weakened his screaming and not the fact that the way he used to scream was the definition of unhealthy vocal technique
Digging: The Pogues - Rum Sodomy & the Lash
y’all are Mean this song is def underwhelming for me but it’s not like, make fun of chino’s physical appearance or lifestyle choices bad
Oof. I’m holding on for some Terry Date magic at this point because yeah, I’ve been bending over backwards to hear anything really interesting since SNW.
"love that the conclusion is that drugs and being a fat fuck weakened his screaming and not the fact that the way he used to scream was the definition of unhealthy vocal technique"
Sure, to be more fair to him, that is a big part of it, and particularly his vocal damage in 2001. Yet his screams still somehow sound much better on S/T than SNW.
"y’all are Mean this song is def underwhelming for me but it’s not like, make fun of chino’s physical appearance or lifestyle choices bad"
Not making fun of him, simply said he was a bit heavier at points and how it might have affected certain album performances. It's the other people in here calling him a fat fuck.
Eh... Not really hyped for the album anymore.
Didn't find Ohms interesting or engaging at all but that was ok because the closing song on Deftones albums are never the best. I like Genesis a bit more, the electronics are cool but the song in general is super average.
Why are people saying this is a return to the vibe of the Terry Date years just because he is producing it? Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan was a return to the sound of those years, like a lot of material off of both records could have easily fit inbetween Fur and Pony and they fucking nailed it on those two records.
Gore was an experiment I didn't dig so much but it had an atmosphere, I feel similar towards it as I do s/t.
I'll check out the new album definitely, but won't be holding out for something great.
all u tiny ball mean boys would nut in 3 seconds if u met chino even if it was 5 seconds after u called him fat online
I actually did meet him at a show and was pretty much starstruck lol. Dude is one of my favorite singers of all time and I mean no disrespect - just making some observations on his SNW days.
Wasn’t his weight gain due to divorce/drug addiction/tension with the band going on at the time?
This will be their best album since Gore and I really liked Gore
if you look at his cheeks you can tell it was drugs.
“ Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan was a return to the sound of those years, like a lot of material off of both records could have easily fit inbetween Fur and Pony“
As someone that loves pretty much all of their records, I couldn’t disagree more. The guitar work alone is a clear progression from the s/t and SNW. Plus, Deftones never would’ve made a song like Rosemary in the 90’s.
And bloc come on I don’t see nearly enough fat chino jokes in here, you’re slacking.
"He's just not a good screamer tbh."
Wrong again. He has some of the best screaming performances I've heard, period. Yea, he has declined with age but that's only natural.
I saw him live back in 2018 and he was excellent, he even went the extra mile with some of his screams and added some new ones.
Man it’s been too long since I’ve seen these guys live
Was such an awesome show when I saw them \m/
Guitarwork on DE and KNY is bland as fuck, the hell you on about, people
Hoping to see them come next summer, it'll be a blast if all this corona shit is gone by then
Yeah need COVID to fuck off already. Was supposed to see them earlier this year, but COVID caused them to postpone
“ Guitarwork on DE and KNY is bland as fuck, the hell you on about, people”
You having a laugh?
s/t is criminally underrated
Better than Ohms
"Wasn’t his weight gain due to divorce/drug addiction/tension with the band going on at the time?"
Nah, it was food. Too much of it.
"Wrong again. He has some of the best screaming performances I've heard, period. Yea, he has declined with age but that's only natural."
For radio bands, sure.
Eh I think in his prime his harsh vocals were as good as anyone else, but that’s just me.
that's a reasonable opinion to hold, it's not just you
The more I hear this the worse it sounds to me. Really hope the rest of the album delivers far better than the two lead singles. Has anyone heard it in its entirety?
some professional reviewers
Not that I can see
the deftones forum and subreddit have some advanced scans of a couple of magazine reviews that haven't been made public to the interwebz
here's the metal hammer review for you:
"It's rare in a career spanning more than a quarter of a century that a band could make as few missteps as Deftones have. The Sacramento alt-metallers have rarely let their lofty standards slip below essential, but, even though many were hugely onboard with the more ethereal, experimental post-rock vibes of 2016's Gore, there were some murmurings of discontent from fans that the album sacrificed too much in the way of heaviness. If you were one of those people then Ohms will definitely go some way to placating you and your tastes, as long as you don't expect Deftones to have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.
Opener Genesis is expertly pitched between the slow-burning mystique of the previous album, yet it's still dominated by a gargantuan Stephen Carpenter metal riff. It's then followed by two songs that sting like a butterfly and float like a bee; Ceremony is woozy one minute and white hot the next, while Urantia chugs into view as if it is going to be a full-blown metallic stomper before pulling back to a gentle strut. This dance continues for the rest of the song, and showcases everything that make Deftones so special. Their use of dynamics, the ability to be so heart-stopping beautiful yet outwardly aggressive, is the reason why so many people hold this band in such esteem. That push and pull is second nature to them at this point, and while it wouldn't be correct to say that Ohms points the band in any new directions or draws from any new influences, Deftones are such masters at taming these contradictory, capacious sounds that the results are continually glorious.
...Saying that, the second half of the record is definitely where the old-school fans of traditional heaviness will have the most joy. Pompeji is a tricksy number, starting as slow and quiet as the album gets before launching into a destructive groove and then ending on as close to Vangelis-inspired synthwave scene as Deftones have ever been, before This Link Is Dead comes powering into view. It's probably the most out-and-out brutal Deftones have sounded since When Girls Telephone Boys on their 2003 self-titled album. It's such a delight to hear the band rage with such uncompromising intensity again, so good in fact that it's the highlight of the record. They don't let up for the following Radiant City, and even though Headless is a slow and more spacious number it still contains some crushing guitar parts. The title track closes the record, once more an amalgam of lush melodies and post-metal crush, but with an added stoner riff that wouldn't be out of place on a Red Fang album.
Ohms is an album for every type of Deftones fan. Whether you're longing for the days of Around The Fur or if you appreciated the more measured material on Gore there will be something that you'll love. In taking an extensive tour of their past, Deftones continue to be essential today."
It's noteworthy that what I and most deftones fans, that have heard the leaks, believe to be the best song on the album "the spell of mathematics" isn't even mentioned in the review.
Who reviewed it?
I remember I used to buy Kerrang and MH and Terrorizer (rip) 12 years ago... Fucking Terry Bezer had some of the worst opinions on music
Do you regret hearing it prior to release in low quality? I've been really trying to wait lol
"You ever notice with a lot of Deftones songs, the chorus doesn't live up to the verses or vice versa?"
Yep. Also, for me, a lot of the time I enjoy the music just fine but Chino's melodies are lazy or boring.
Agreed. I felt that way a lot when listening to DE
Yeah that's kind of their shtick at this point. The best Chino choruses are on the Norma Jean album he helped write and record.
Digging: Envy - The Fallen Crimson
he literally wrote one chorus there storm
Better than any Deftones chorus!
And I believe it is 3 songs? Don't know about chorus in each one tho
bit of a whacky take there storm
Chino helped write one song (Surrender Your Sons) on that Norma Jean album and did vox on three of them. He didn’t didn’t help write the whole album
I do like that song but saying it’s better than every Deftones chorus is pretty dumb
It's only dumb or a take if you think I'm someone to take serious. Y'all have been here long enough. 😉
Oh. I don't like that winky face. At all. The other eye is the one that winks.
There's also that one pesky thing to consider: that music is, y'know, SUBJECTIVE.
I don't know if it's just me, but the vocal mixing on this song sounds terrible. The vocal production sounds forced and it doesn't really mesh well with the instrumentals. Also Chino is getting too old for those screams. The song itself is ok.
Is it ok? Cuz you sure just said a lot that would make me hate any song with all those marks.
I thought everything else was good enough to at least average out the vocal mixing/some of the performance, so I wouldn't go as far as to say its flaws ruin the track entirely. Therefore, I overall thought the song was mediocre-to-okay rating-wise.
Wasn't a fan of Ohms but this ruled.
I'm still hung up on you guys thinking Chino is even top 50% of screamers.
I liked the t/t cuz it had that cruise on the interstate highwaya vibe
“ The title track closes the record, once more an amalgam of lush melodies and post-metal crush, but with an added stoner riff that wouldn't be out of place on a Red Fang album.”
like this is pretty spot on
I didn't even know people were saying Chino was a top screamer that's weird to read.
what’s the top 50 then ghostbird please enlighten us with your arbitrary opinion
I mean he's way better than Chino, yeah. But literally I didn't even say top 50 I said top 50% so it's more like toss a coin and choose any scream band and it's heads or tails the guy is better than him.
Fortunately screams aren't why I listen to Deftones, nor why I like their vocals even.
Hopefully we all feel that way cuz i will be so confused if people disagree.
Ironically i just stumbled on a bio that included Hit Parader ranking Camilo Wong Moreno as the 51st greatest screamer in metal when they ranked the top 100. Ghost has gone meta on us.
I love how the chorus is this beautifully melodic bit with chino's vocals not really harmonizing, creating this awesome "ugliness" found on gore. Hyped as shit
Chino is a good screamer, but if all he's going to scream is GUNS RAZORS KNIVES and other dumb shit then I don't need to hear him scream
god that song is terrible lol
lmao I forgot about Rocket Skates. Great song, terrible lyrics.
Stop saying "this song fucks", you sound like retards.
Alice in Chains Dirt
Between the Buried and Me Colors_Live
Between the Buried and Me Future Sequence: Live at the Fidelitorium
Lost Horizon A Flame to the Ground Beneath
SikTh Flogging the Horses
Twelve Foot Ninja Silent Machine
btw this song fucks
chino moreno is in the top 50% of screamers from Deftones
top 50% of screamers are Chino Moreno from Deftones
This song most definitely fucks.
Saw “Alice in Chains Dirt” and thought I was going to get roasted for my 5’s
Anyways this song most definitely fucks and Rocket Skates is a great track
it's honestly a miracle that the new album hasn't leaked yet with 2 days to go until official release
More like the opposite of a miracle if you think of it
not it’s not
I don't know what you want to call it, but almost every single release on the 25th of September has leaked already, including the likes of fucking Machine Gun Kelly, Carrie Underwood and IDLES, and yet no sign of a Deftones leak. I guess good job on the label's part.
Chino hired a hitman to silence all the leaks
So a plumber?
btw Ohms grew on me so much, I prefer it to Genesis at this point tbh
yeah ohms is much better than this
A 5 incoming boys
can tell by this song alone that that is extremely unlikely I’m expecting a complicated 3.5
What is between genesis and ohms is better than both of them, believe me
I don't know why they chose these songs as singles tbh but the album is intense
i feel like some kind of great tv show or movie also comes out in a day or two but can't play my mind on it
ohms is such a shit closer though, but a good song otherwise
It 100% makes sense as a closer in the context of the album, that's what I can say
Valkoor, I've heard it as well and while Ohms seemed underwhelming, it makes complete and utter sense in the album's entirety. It actually changed how I viewed both songs.
Hot take: This album is definitely up there with WP and SNW. Blown the fuck away
this album average is ridiculous lol i love it hype
"Hot take: This album is definitely up there with WP and SNW. Blown the fuck away"
While I don't want to do any really premature evaluations, I think this might be my favorite post-SNW album too.
This place is about to blow up in the coming days, I guarantee it
is that a threat
Idk, y'all better watch it with that average is what im sayin ..
i don’t trust u leaky fuckers
Trust me, this is easily their best since fucking forever
sounds like a crush
sounds like marketing
"This place is about to blow up in the coming days, I guarantee it"
You knew it all this time, Valk.
We're easily getting a bunch of new users on the site yeah
The last 40-seconds of 'This Link is Dead', though.
