Imagine writing a song about promoting violence whilst wearing an anti-fascist jacket

"Imagine writing a song about promoting violence whilst wearing an anti-fascist jacket"

Wait what? Violence isn't a "fascist only" quality. Just because you support something politically doesn't mean you lose all rights to be aggressive.

Astral Abortis
November 29th 2017

It's not, but using violence to solve problems is a pretty key aspect of a fascist worldview. You'd think if you're against fascism, you're against the idea that violence is a necessary solution.

"It's not, but using violence to solve problems is a pretty key aspect of a fascist worldview. You'd think if you're against fascism, you're against the idea that violence is a necessary solution."

While I agree that it's a key aspect for a lot of fascists, (I'm anti-fascist myself as a centrist who leans right libertarian), I wouldn't necessarily call it hypocritical. Sometimes violence is necessary in situations, particularly a personal one like Ronnie wrote about here. Was the way he wrote about it immature and more anger venting rather than a calm approach? Sure, but expecting something different out of a song titled "Fuck You and All Your Friends" is a little silly.

Astral Abortis
November 29th 2017
6731 Comments

I wouldn't expect anything different out of a song with that title, but I would expect something different out of someone wearing such a blatantly anti-fascist jacket.

The only place violence is necessary would be in self-defence. His approach here feels more aggressive and antagonistic than his supposed views would imply.

BlackMalachite
November 29th 2017
3711 Comments

I'd argue that violence is necessary in more situations than in just self-defense personally. I know this is anecdotal evidence for my position but I feel it would be relevant here and pretty similar to the song's subject matter; about four years ago (I was 20 years old, my friend was 22) my friend and I got in a spat over a woman, and couldn't come to terms with each other because we were angry at each other (later on it turned out we had both been getting played because we were hormonal morons), so we ended up agreeing to a mutual fight. We beat the living daylights out of each other, then we we back to my place and popped open a couple beers and watched Naruto together while talking it out now that we'd gotten it out of our system. Sometimes that release is necessary, is it the ideal outcome? Not in the slightest, but it can work.

Astral Abortis
November 29th 2017
6731 Comments

That sounds like a pretty barbaric and juvenile way to deal with a problem, but I wouldn't expect anything else from you.

BlackMalachite

Sometimes men need to fight it out, it was a consensual fight and we ended up chilling afterwords and we still have a strong friendship to this day.

Moving away from this tangent though and back onto the main point, sometimes being antagonistic can be healthy and even therapeutic. Especially in terms of songwriting like what's presented in this track.

Vox are awful, lyrics are worse, and the riffs are mediocre (one or two are decent).
And yeah, that’s clearly an antifa outfit. And yes, antifa is violent since all radicals are relatively violent.

"na it is one of the defining qualities of fascism. authoritarian , domineering nationalism / forcible suppression"

That's also implying that all violence is domineering and used for suppression though. Sometimes (such as in my anecdotal statement listed above) it's mutually agreed upon that two or more people can fight.

Sounds like you need some more constructive ways of dealing with anger and violent urges, Snide. Perhaps you should seek professional help.

As a person who suffers a short fuse and a lot of anger issues, I can tell you that fighting it out has never solved any of my issues, and taking it out on others just kinda spreads the issue.

You and your friend both sound like you have unhealthy mental states if you feel like the only way to solve an issue was in some pseudo-macho showdown.

I haven't fought in a while, and yeah I did have anger issues back then. Even though I haven't felt the need to fight or gotten in situations lately where it would be necessary, I still feel that it's healthy in some cases.

obviously you want to, ideally, try to work on not becoming so angry and riled up in the first place, like whaling on a punching bag 10 times a day is still not great but regardless, there are going to be circumstances wherein you are pushed to your boundaries, and imo it's good to have something like a punching bag around. can be cathartic.

That jacket made me cringe a little. Even with the 'strike-out' through the swastika, I would never feel comfortable wearing that. Better to wear something that symbolizes the opposition to fascism. Standing against something is good, in this case. Standing for something? Far better.
Role models are important, more important than people imagine, so even if they use violence to crush fascism, we're still just creating another violent generation in the process. Better to oppose it by standing together, showing love to those that deserve it and lets the nazis rot on the outside. I've been planning to get a rainbow flag tattoo soon, for the sole purpose of showing my LGBT and multicultural friends that I'm not afraid to stand with them.
