Darren King Leaves Mutemath 2017-08-11 by Masochist | 9 Comments | New Orleans-based synth rock band MuteMath have announced the sudden departure of drummer Darren King. In a statement written on the band's Facebook page, vocalist Paul Meany wrote,
"This is not easy, but I have to announce today that Darren King has decided to leave the band and as of now, will no longer be performing with Mutemath. I cannot believe what I am typing, but it is reality. I can promise you that we've worked relentlessly at trying to find a solution for an unbelievably challenging situation, but for now, I can only ask that everyone please give us the benefit of the doubt."
In King's place, the band has recruited David Hutchinson of the now-defunct band Earthsuit (which also featured Meany) to play the remaining dates of their US/Euro tour. In addition, their upcoming album Play Dead is still set to be released on Sept. 8th of this year.

Usually the drummer doesn't mean shit in rock these days, but damn this is a big blow. King was crazy on the kit and brought a lot of flavour. Although I am speaking in terms of their first few albums. Perhaps he's already been neutered on the latest stuff.
| | | Darren King was definitely one of the biggest draws to old Mutemath, with his crowning achievement being 'Odd Soul'. But I think you're right, he hasn't had a pivotal role in the band since then. Still...seeing him live with those taped headphones on his head was always a highlight of watching a Mutemath concert, the guy is an absolute monster on that kit. A real downer that he's gone, and so suddenly.
Also, given the language of the notice and subsequent posts on Facebook, it doesn't sound like it was an amicable break.
| | | Their last LP didn't have a single track where you could really feel Darren's presence. Sad that this is happening but honestly as a big Mutemath fan it seems like they're more or less done at this point. Paul should probably move onto something else now that he's the only remaining original member. Without Darren's drumming their live shows just will not be the same.
| | | Haven't listened to these guys in ages, but their drummer is super sick. Definitely a big loss.
| | | Huge bummer, and honestly with their bassist leaving as well only a few months ago I think the band will likely be done after their current touring commitments are finished. Paul even hints as much in the statement.
| | | Darren King set a massive standard for pop rock drumming on Mutemath's debut. Maybe this move is for the better, but it still kinda sucks nonetheless.
| | | Damn. I didn't know all the original members had taken off besides the singer.
| | | Maybe Paul was being a Meany.
| | | Welp, they are done.
