Gorillaz Are Through

2006-04-16 by NEDM | 37 Comments
The techno/hip-hop band Gorillaz have retired, according to their agent. The band has released a few albums, but have jsut struck major success. The members also had something to say on the topic, "We have released many albums, and two of them hit major success. We are quitting while we are ahead." The band also said that they are not leaving due to a fued. "We are simply retiring, we have done enough".

I'm sure a greatest hits cd will follow their departure.

so wait, what does that ACTUALLY mean? Damon Albarn doesn't want to make music under that name anymore?

I read that on various news sites, so if it's a hoax, a lot of sources are jumping for it.

What is meant with 'various albums' though? They only have two albums or am I mistakin'?

They have three (i think) - one is a remix album of their first one.

Still, it's just Albarn and an animator really...isn't it? Either way, there's some damn fine music there.

Even if it is true, while it would be a shame, I'm sure we would still see some quality music from Albarn......it's one thing to quit a "band", but quitting music is a whole new ballgame.

Their are alot of people needed on each Gorillaz album but they three main ones are Albarn, Dan the Automator and the animator (the name escapes me)

RIP Gorillaz. I'll miss their stuff, but better they die out before their gimmick dries up.

Dan the Automator and Del quit the band after the release of the self titled. As far as I know, the only remaining members were Albarn, Tina Weymouth, and the animator.

Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads worked in Gorillaz? That makes the band a little cooler. Too bad they're done. They were aight.

yeah you can't expect that sound to die entirely. dan the automater and del tha funkee homosapian will continue to work in the hip-hop world, and damon albarn will continue to work in the rock world. sure it's a big loss for the alternative scene, but let's be honest, how long was a cartoon band gonna last?

and yes, they only had three official full lengths, one being a remix album, but they had a lot of EPs and singles.

I know it is lame to criticise news here since we need all the pieces we can get, but it would be nice if you were more accurate or the piece was clearer. Like the quotes for example, who are you quoting? The quote also seems inaccurate but that might not be your fault, just whereever you got it from. For a band that wasn't really a band, was only around for 5 years and released only two years in that time, it isn't like this is some massive disbanding. Also a greatest hits is kind of silly, since they have a MAX of ten great songs.

I'd much rather see more Blur anyway though I do like the Gorillaz. Cheers to them for making hip-hop and techno influences accessible to many, I don't doubt that many kids were exposed to different styles of music because of this group.

They were very good, but you there's only so much they could do, there was only supposed to be one Gorillaz album to begin with, Demon Days was only made because of all of the demands for another album with new material.

And the Animator is Jamie Hewlet, the dude that did "Tank Girl"

why can't anyone say a band sucks without all the fuss and i swear nexttime some one talks junk about my username i will snap on that person

Zesty Mordant

Because:
1) There are more responible ways to communicate such sentiments.
2) You should at least explain why, if you're going to make such stupidly brash comments.
3) Your name sucks and people will probably continue to rag on you until you change it.

whos cares what record company i like? i like other bands outside of victory records but nooooooooooooo you got to get on the name maybe just maybe was gettign tired of the same old usernames i used and just decided to pick something new and would remember easily

now good day sir

Zesty Mordant

dude, what I'm trying to tell you is that as long as you have that name, you're gonna get ragged on MASSIVELY. Not so much because you pledge allegiance to a record company, but also because it says to other people that you prefer to pigeonhole yourself with something that you may not like in a couple of months.
And besides, the main issue is you making stupid generalizing comments without backing it up.

I'm suspicious of this storie's validity, but if it's true, I wish he had more information about. Also, it would be sad if it were true, too, of course... yeah.

That sucks. I really liked the Gorillaz, really good music to just sit back and chill to. Oh well, maybe another good musical project will come out of this.

Although, I'm still not sure if I believe this or not.
