Katatonia tease new album

2016-03-07 by dynamic range police | 50 Comments
A new video has been uploaded on YouTube where Katatonia tease their upcoming 10th studio album. Directly from the video's description box:

Katatonia, the Swedish purveyors of dark progressive rock/metal, have revealed details of their eagerly awaited 10th studio album – The new album, entitled The Fall of Hearts is set for release on the 20th May 2016 through their long-time home of Peaceville Records.

The Fall of Hearts is the first record to feature new drummer Daniel ’Mojjo’ Moilanen and with the addition of their recently recruited guitarist Roger Öjersson (Tiamat), who came in just in time to sprinkle some blistering solos on the album, Katatonia will continue to push their musical boundaries beyond their roots in the metal scene while drawing in new fans from across the musical spectrum like peers such as Opeth and Anathema have also done, cementing Katatonia’s place as one of the most revered and cherished of all bands in the world of modern heavy music.

Katatonia comment on The Fall Of Hearts "This album is probably everything we unknowingly ever dreamed of to release. It's a bleak but adventurous journey through our elements, we haven't held back, we have pushed to get forward and backward in the ever spiralling night of our musical legacy."

Don't necessarily agree but that misty background and particularly that tree are a morbid joy to see. Album title is pretty lame though.

We are Katatonia, and we're back to ruin the joy of spring.

The sun is out, the plants are in bloom, the wind is pleasantly cool on your face, you are alone in the world, you await only the grave, you hope you go before watching your loved ones slowly die.

idk how the line-up change will affect this album, but so far it looks like yet another typical katatonia release

"one of the most revered and cherished of all bands in the world of modern heavy music."

That praise is a bit overblown lol but I've give this a shot when it comes out.

"progressive rock/metal"

lol stop. There's nothing 'prog' about a-little-more-than-basic songstructuring.

"There's nothing 'prog' about a-little-more-than-basic songstructuring."

This.
People need to stop tossing around that term everytime something doesn't entirely fit into their clichees.

Asdfp277
March 8th 2016

it's not about the clichés, it's the sound palette and mixing

zaruyache
March 8th 2016
27404 Comments

what does that even mean

Asdfp277
March 8th 2016
24310 Comments

u know when people call 'progressive' something that's obviously not prog, it's usually coz of the timbre of the guitars, like, the production, the mixing, etc etc. like how some metalcore can be confused as 'djent' coz of the production, despite not having the stop-start riffs characteristic of the genre, or how u can tell something is 'indie' rock/pop just by listening to the timbre of the instruments and the production, even when u know nothing of how the actual music was made (classic 'indie' definition)

blah blah, it's the timbre

Asdfp277
March 8th 2016
24310 Comments

like how u can tell something is post-rock when u hear the twinkly guitars and the synths pretending to be a string section, and the rather slow tempo, even if it's a 10 second snippet, even when it has nothing to do with the actual definition of the genre. that's the cause of the confusion, and why this is being called 'progressive'

Checked these guys out for the first time, their last LP rules! I guess from the ratings that all their albums are worth checking out? I've heard one of the tracks with Akerfeldt on Plug.dj once, was pretty cool

Yep, they're a very consistent band, so if you like everything you've heard so far, dig more through their catalogue.

if u liked the last one, u'll prolly dig a few more by them yea

dead end kings is like in the middle between the great cold distance (heavier side) and night is the new day (softer side). go check em out!

Disagree. Reckon DEK is about as heavy/soft as NITND. Great Cold Distance is the heavier side, agreed. Viva Emptiness and Last Fair Deal Gone Down are alternative metal, the latter with gothic tendencies. Tonight's Decision and Discouraged Ones have a pure gothic vibe going on. The two albums prior to them are death/doom.

Hard to recommend an album that "captures" this band properly. I reckon if you like one enough, you can grow to like them all.
