Blackstar the song is going to be a tough listen 'the day he died, his spirit rose' etc and of course the two closing songs are obvious in their poignancy 'if I never see the English evergreens I'm running to...I'm falling down'. Every time I listened to the album I have to admit it made me anticipate his death, hoping of course it was still a way off...but clearly the lyrical subject matter was no accident.
Simply put, Bowie was the best of them all.
|
| |
I was just listening to his new album for the fifth time now, so this definitely hits like a shit ton of bricks. RIP to an absolute legend.

I'm deeply sad and shocked with this notice, the death of the chameleon artist. I only saw it right now, here on Sputnik. Simply disappeared one of the most important artists of his generation and of all time. His capacity of creation and innovation was really unique. Bowie always was one of the artists that I most admired and loved. The proof of that is my avatar here on Sputnik. But what is most important in this moment is his footprint that he left in this world. His artist work will prevail forever and lighting up this world forever and continue to amaze the future generations. So, RIP David Jones or David Bowie, as you wish. We always will remember and love you.
|
| |
I'm not a big fan of Bowie... but there's no doubt to how much of an influence and icon he was. At least unlike many, he went out with everyone praising him for his latest work, still on everyone's minds. Probably makes it even harder to comprehend.
Music has really taken a massive kick to the balls in the last month. Losing Scott Weiland, Lemmy and now David Bowie in that time. Lets hope 2016 can move on from this tragic loss and have music produce some great things... the industry didn't need this today.

Everyone at school was talking about Bowie it threw me off a bit because I had no idea so many people were fans of his. Kinda says something about him and his art that a bunch of 17 year olds love the music and the man despite the generation gap. Loved the music, absolute favourite artist of all time and I never thought he'd go so suddenly man. Blackstar makes so much sense now it's eerie.
Fuck, it's not hyperbole to say that DB and his music changed my life and I don't think anyone will ever come close to his genius.

My boss told me about this while I was at work, knowing I'm a huge fan of Bowie. I REALLY didn't want to believe him, but damn, if I didn't shed a few tears on my way home as I listened to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. Very few musician deaths have actually made me cry, but this was definitely the one that's hit me hardest.

pretty sure he released the new album knowin he was on the way out^

yeah it's all but confirmed he had that in mind
|
| |
As soon as I heard about this on the radio today, I literally screamed "WHAT THE FUCK!?" at the top of my lungs. I didn't even realize he had cancer, and it's even crazier how this happened only two days after his birthday and Blackstar's release. Of all the musicians that seem to drop like flies lately, this one definitely the one that hurts me the most. Bowie was one of my all-time favorite musicans, and one the most creative and eclectic there ever was. Suffice to say I had a good cry listening to Heroes and Under Pressure earlier.
R.I.P. so hard.
|
| |
It's horrible to learn that yet another excellent musician has passed on. And releasing one more album just two days before his death, David Bowie was a true artist in the absolute sense of the term. RIP.
|

You know the kids are emotional when the word 'fuck' is in a good portion of the comments. Let the emotions boil.
Also anyone putting Scott Weiland in the same sentence as David Bowie should stop listening to music all together.
|
| |
agreed who has emotions at a time like this? the fuck guys
|
| |
Scott Weiland, Lemmy, now this shit right here. Most of my favourite acts wouldn't even have careers if it wasn't for Bowie. Some of my favourite albums of the 70's that didn't come from Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin came from his back catalog. The guy's a true legend. And the fact that Blackstar's framed around that album being his swan song (as in, he saw it coming), as well as the fact it's as awesome as it is... Good luck on the other side, David. We miss you, mate. RIP
And Fozzie, please don't hit me for bringing up Scott, alright? I ain't saying he was anywhere close to Lemmy or Bowie's levels, cause he wasn't.
|
| |
2016 already off to a shit start
R.I.P. a great artist and visionary who I believe still had so much to offer the world
|
| |
Martin Gore (Depeche Mode):
"David Bowie - Where does one start? Is it too obvious to state that he was the most influential artist for people of our generation and younger? Ziggy Stardust was the first album I owned and his ability to innovate meant that I was waiting patiently for the release of Blackstar just a few days ago.
I have heard Bowie blasting from Mr. Gahan’s dressing room way too many times to begin to count. Heroes was the first song that we ever played as the original Depeche Mode. We were all much more than casual fans.
He is the only artist who compelled us to rush to a record store on day one of a release back in the days of vinyl and beyond. His music is what grabbed us but he was so much more than just a musician.
To follow Bowie, to be one of his fans, was to be led on a magical, winding journey. He constantly pushed boundaries and introduced us to styles and genres we were unaware of or didn’t exist before he invented them.
He was a star - the star of stars. For us, he was the greatest legend. A legend who never rested on his laurels but continued to experiment up until his death.
We, along with the rest of the world, mourn the loss of our greatest talent. This will be a hard one to recover from."
|
| |
"Also anyone putting Scott Weiland in the same sentence as David Bowie should stop listening to music all together."
Well you just did that, so you know what to do

"Also anyone putting Scott Weiland in the same sentence as David Bowie should stop listening to music all together"
The only comparison that people are making is because they died around the same time along with Lemmy. it has nothing to do with the music.
|
| |
Well, Weiland's biggest influence was clearly Bowie so...?
'First Kiss on Mars', 'Barbarella', 'Pruno', 'Where's the Man' - a lot of Bowie influenced stuff
|
| |
Late to the party with this, but farewell to a true legend.
RIP

My newest son show me right now the personal homage to Bowie of the keyboardist of Dream Theater, Jordan Rudess. His homage was made with Space Oddity. It's very beautiful and touching to listen to the music only played in the classical piano. I'm going to put here the link of it.

Enjoy it.

Only now I can put here my testimony. I'm without words. It was really a shock to me. We will never forget you. RIP Bowie.
Thanks e210013 for your post about the link of Rudess. You're right. This is a beautiful tribute to the great star. Thanks Rudess.

you don't know how right you were

His producer says that down the years Bowie had loads of material he didn't want to release, and now he and the record companies are talking to release it all.
The desecration of Bowie's legacy for commercial gain is upon us. We all know that it's just milking him for all he's worth (which is much more now he's dead, to the delight of the record companies) but people will still lap it up.
