the songwriting seems to be more interesting so far. more curveballs. sunbather, in all its glory, seems pretty planned out.

Yeah agreed noc. The vocalist should of done a lot of stylistic experimenting or at the very least the engineer should of EQ'd the vox better. Wouldn't mind an instrumental version of the album haha

i don't really have a complaint about the vocals. There are not many moments on this record where the vocals ADD much like they did on Sunbather, but I don't think they sound BAD.

I like it but I'm still calling that it'll have a lower rating than Judah. I'm putting my figurative money on a 3.7/5 right now. It won't have the "omg this unknown band is amaze!!" hype that Snbthr got to help drive its hypetrain, and the bm style will (probably) turn off many of the people who liked Snbthr only because of the accessible dreaminess. Just my guess tho.

Luna is a massive track; wall-of-sound in a very good way. Baby Blue is the weak spot here and it doesn't really stand on its own. Being nestled into the middle of the album helps it out. Overall, I'm still really digging this, several spins later.

Umm yeah MO, bands were doing post-black before Deafheaven but outside of Alcest and Lantlos pretty much none of them got any attention and they weren't note worthy at all. It blew up after Judah.

as much hate as this band gets, I'm sure they had no idea they'd blow up into such a stigmatized band amongst black metal purists when they released sunbather. I saw them live (with Alcest) pre-sunbather and there wasn't an ounce of pretentiousness, just a bunch of dudes playing their own style of black metal.

honestly i think the best blackgaze record is woods of desolation - torn beyond reason, takes a lot of the major key stuff from deafheaven but it's much darker, very anthemic too

lantlos and aafcc are great too though ofc

Gifts for the Earth is awesome too.
The only thing that I don't like about the album is the wah-wah solo in Come Back, but that's not a major complaint. Everything else lives up to the expectations I had.

I'd have a really hard time deciding my favorite post-bm record but that one's definitely in the top running. If anyone else hasn't heard it yet (or Lantlos) get on that after you finish jamming Bermuda.
