MXTabs: Publisher Signings 2007-05-24 by WishMaster | 33 Comments | Madison, WI – May 24, 2007 – Musicnotes, Inc. announced today it has reached licensing agreements with several thousand music publishers and administrators, including BMG Music Publishing, peermusic, Famous Music and Bug Music who have agreed to license guitar and drum tablature for their song catalogs to be made available on MXTabs.net.
Through these licensing agreements, guitar and drum tablature for songs written by artists and songwriters throughout these catalogs will be made freely available for download at the MXTabs.net website. This includes songs from such popular artists and bands as Coldplay, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Wilco, Elvis Costello, Spoon, Modest Mouse, The Guess Who, Ryan Adams, Willie Dixon and thousands of others.
“When BMG Music Publishing partnered with Musicnotes six years ago, we were confident the Internet would be an incremental business for the music publishing industry. Since that time, the opportunities the Internet has provided for music publishers and songwriters have exploded,” said Nicholas Firth, Chairman and CEO, BMG Music Publishing Worldwide.
“Unfortunately, until now, the market for guitar and drum tablature has been piracy. The best way to fight piracy is to enable legitimate services such as MXTabs.net. We are pleased to once again be part of a pioneering venture with Musicnotes through MXTabs.net, the first legally licensed tab community website, in offering our song catalogs to music consumers,” Firth concluded.
“We applaud Musicnotes for providing this new service which is a win-win for fans, musicians and songwriters,” commented Ralph Peer, CEO of peermusic. “Fans and musicians can access the tablature to their favorite songs and artists free of charge, which allows them to grow their musical talents while at the same time recognizing the intrinsic value of the song and the songs’ creators through Musicnotes’ innovative business model.”
In response to its goal of ensuring songwriters and music creators are rewarded for their craft, MXTabs has also gained support among the songwriting community, including the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) and the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA).
“As President of the Songwriters Guild of America I am always interested in seeing new ways for songwriters to get paid for their hard work,” said Rick Carnes. “MXTabs.net is a bold attempt to monetize the nascent online guitar tabs market. We wish them, and the music, all the luck.”
“The Nashville Songwriters Association International applauds Musicnotes and MXTabs.net for their efforts to ensure songwriters and the creators of music are paid for the use of online guitar tabs,” said Bart Herbison, Executive Director of Nashville Songwriters Association International. “As consumers discover MXTabs.net I believe they will find that not only is it a viable alternative to illegally securing the product–it is also cool and the site they will want to utilize.”
Through agreements with music publishers, participating songwriters and copyright holders will share in advertising revenue generated through views of tablature on the web site MXTabs.net, while still retaining control over their song catalog in a robust online community.
MXTabs.net is expected to launch its new website in summer 2007. For more information on how to participate, publishers and administrators are encouraged to visit www.mxtabs.net.
About MXTabs.net: MXTabs.net is the first legitimately licensed website designed to provide musicians with access to free guitar, bass and drum tablature, while also compensating music publishers and songwriters. Originally launched in 1999, MXTabs was one of the first, largest and most popular destinations for freely available online tabs. In 2006 the site voluntarily closed its doors due to issues of copyright, and the assets have since been acquired by Musicnotes, Inc.

OMG...
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
| | | By the way... there are a lot more publishers signed up than the ones we listed in the press release. We'll put out more news soon, but it's looking pretty good so far.
| | | this is good news, mxtabs used to be the only place i went for tabs
| | | ^ i expect the site to be launched and 100 % functional at the end of August max., or else i'll kill you!
XD...just kidding. this is good news
| | | Yeaaaaaaaah :D, this is very good news.
| | | Awesome
MxTabs used to be like, the premier tab site. Now I simply resort to half-assed powertabs or my ears (which can sometimes yield less than satisfactory results).
| | | Though its good that MxTabs is coming back up, I'm extremely dissapointed that the songs are going to be provided only by licensed songwriters. I really enjoyed tabbing out my own songs, and there was always a tab for nearly everything you wanted, from Bach's guitar arrangements to Children of Bodom. I'm just afraid the music available is going to be extremely limited compared to how it used to be.
| | | ^you mean it's not going to be like it was in 2004/05?
if that's the case, it's probably gonna be UG #2.
| | | I hate Ultimate Guitar with a fury...I've got my fingers crossed.
| | | UG is slow as hell, but it has power tabs.
| | | I hope it is as good as it was. but just that its coming back is great news. all other sites didnt cut it
| | | "I hate Ultimate Guitar with a fury...I've got my fingers crossed."
O.K, but what about two UG's...< that's even crappier.
i really hope it's going to be the good old MX like back in the day.
| | | Excellent news. MX was way better than ultimate-guitar.
| | | This is lovely news.
| | | sexcellent
| | | I have a tiny little tip for you all... if you are interested in seeing MXTabs before it launches, and helping us test out the new site, sign up for the "Get Updates" thing on www.MXTabs.net - we're going to be sending out invites for applications to our alpha and beta tests for the redesigned site soon. We've got some cool new stuff coming with the relaunch, and are going to need some user input. This Message Edited On 05.24.07
| | | good times
| | | ..so...happy!
| | | HURRAY!!!!!
I can finally get tabs again!
| | |
^you mean it's not going to be like it was in 2004/05?
Basically. Think about it - back in the day, people could put up ANYTHING. If you wanted the guitar tab to Bach's Prelude for the Lute (which I mentioned because I was the one who submitted it...), you could get things that are that out-of-the-ordinary. How can we be sure that these songwriters are going to put up anything outside of the mainstream?
I just hope that they dont limit this to mainstream and that they do get as many bands as possible. It would make me very happy if they had a group of songwriters specifically for death metal bands, then hardcore, then classical, etc... My point is that it will never be as diverse. But Im happy the guys at MxTabs found some sort of legal way to get their site back up, so I share in the happiness.
| | | Sorry for being a douche, but why is it that so many people dislike UG?
| | | I can't wait to be able to learn Linkin Park songs!
| | | There won't be any problem with things like Bach or other classical composers, as all of that is in the public domain and free to do pretty much whatever someone wants with.
Basically the way this works is this: a songwriter or publisher says "ok we want in" - and then pretty much every single song they administer is able to be used on MXTabs.
For example: Bug Music, listed above, will give us rights bands including Spoon, Calexico, Wilco, "Blind" Willie McTell, Ryan Adams, The Guess Who, Iggy Pop, The Cloud Room, Corrosion of Conformity, Son Volt, Robben Ford, Tenacious D, Gin Blossoms, Gov't Mule, Ian Hunter, Los Lobos, The Old 97s, MxPx, Pizzicato Five, and basically every other band/artist on this list:

Also, keep in mind that this is just one of the several thousand publishers that have already signed on. Obviously not all of them administer as big of a catalog as Bug (although some of them, like BMG, administer a lot MORE), but you get the picture. This Message Edited On 05.24.07This Message Edited On 05.24.07
| | | Surely it won't have the same database as old mx, but I don't doubt that it will be extensive to begin and will only grow from there.
| | |
mxtabs used to be the only place i went for tabs ya me too, so now i hafta get my tab from ultimate guitarwhich isnt too good cuz half the tabs are inaccurate.
| | | Fantastic.
| | | Me verry happy!
| | | Nice! back to ye olde large library of transcript tabs.
| | | Since mxtabs has been down Ive gotten GuitarPro software. That stuff is ballin.
| | | I got E-chords.
| | | hah, i was too young to know that mxtabs existed. :p
why not just seperate the official from independant? make both parties happy.
| | | Because when independent people start making tabs of signed bands it makes the people in the cubicles at the RIAA very unhappy
| | | YEEEEEESSSSSSS
