Sad news for Opeth's new LP

2014-05-09 by FictionalFlames | 95 Comments
Mikael Akerfeldt has confirmed that Pale Communion will be rescheduled for an August 25th release date instead of the original date of June 17th. There were "several circumstances" which caused Opeth from "delivering essential tools" to their record label company, Roadrunner, to make Pale Communion a reality during the mid-summer. Other information regarding release/pre-order dates can be viewed in the link below.

This I can deal with. I was afraid the news would be that they'd suffered another member leaving during recording, or that it was somehow canceled altogether.

The only true issue I had with Heritage was that production was funky sounding. If they work on that and the music truly is more melodic then hell, I'm stoked as fuck and am willing to wait

Disappointment delayed.

I listened to him talk about this album in an interview and he pretty much said he's done with metal.

Doesn't want to start a new band because there are Opeth fans who will buy whatever he releases so he can sustain a new musical masturbation adventure.

Well, as long as it turns out good. I was only slightly into Heritage. It felt like background music for a 1970's porno at times and the only song I really really liked was Face In The Snow. Kinda hoping for some heavy stuff again.

They're barely even opeth anymore. I liked heritage a lot, but almost everyone's new except mikael and everything is completely different. I think opeth died 5 years ago and this is essentially his solo stuff, sort of paralleling what Steven Wilson's been doing instead of porcupine tree

I just miss serious, somber sounding Opeth. Watershed and Heritage have out of place, quirky moments that just don't feel like Opeth at all. Also those albums lacked that certain "Opethy" atmosphere that was on all of their prior albums. Also WAY too much proggy wankery going on. Oh, and those godawful album covers. The end.

True, but at least that album still had a good amount of classic sounding Opeth. Just with a slight twist. I think that album was brilliant actually and a great way to show that they could still be Opeth with different elements thrown in.

"Anybody that doubts Opeth's ability to create quality nonmetal music hasn't heard Damnation."

Or Heritage, seeing as that's better than Damnation.

Also the prog styles on Heritage and Watershed aren't really wanky at all for the most part.

Opeth have never sinned of wankery imo, unlike other prog-metal bands. One of the reasons why they rule as a band.

True they may not be as "wanky" as most prog bands, but it's still there. Admittedly most is probably due to the newest drummer and guitarist that were on those albums. Still it's very un-Opeth like. Even Mikael's vocals are full on cheese at times too haha.

Watershed was plenty somber and serious. and oh no, theyre experimenting and putting weird shit in there. how do you even like prog if you cant appreciate some weirdness? also, Watershed's album cover is objectively awesome. i like Heritage's album cover but yeah. Watershed's isnt up for debate.

There is nothing wanky about Axenrot's drumming. His performance on Heritage is the best drum performance to ever grace an Opeth album imo. There's plenty of groove and feeling in Axe's playing.

I am just as disappointed as the rest of you from the move away from classic death metal Opeth, that being said, you should approach whatever comes out with an open mind, because its still going to be musically very sound. Mikael commented, after working on the Storm Corrosion project with Steven Wilson that he wanted to use real instruments, real strings, real horns, because of the audible differences. This is what making music is all about, experimentation, precision, and vision. I loved Death Metal Opeth just as much as the rest of you, I think I've listened to Blackwater Park more times than I can count, but if we can just accept that it won't be a death metal album, I think we may find we thoroughly enjoy this new Opeth material.

The problem with Heritage wasn't that it was a prog album, it's that it wasn't good. For a band I love this much, I'm not willing to write them off based on one misstep. Even if they're done from here, I'm not going to shit on a band that gave me 15 years of great music.

2 month delay is NBD but I wonder if it happened because the label vetoed the mix.
