Lou Reed Passes Away at 71

2013-10-27 by SgtPepper EMERITUS | 116 Comments
Lou Reed, one of the most innovative and celebrated musicians in the history of rock music, died this sunday from what has only been described as a "liver-related ailment." He was 71. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Lou Reed had received a liver transplant earlier this year after experiencing chronic liver failure. It's no secret that the legendary musician has battled addictions to alcohol and drugs throughout his career, and though he has been sober for decades, the aftermath of those past addictions still managed to be a burden on his health even in recent years.

While Lou Reed is perhaps most famous for his role in The Velvet Underground's first four albums, he's also had a very prolific solo career spanning 39 years. Going on to release rock classics like Transformer and Berlin, as well as continuing to explore his interests in experimental music in albums like ‪Metal Machine Music‬.

Now, speaking as a longtime fan, I have always admired Lou Reed's music particularly for his lyrical depiction of the darkness in modern society. He was so conscious about it all, and so relentlessly descriptive whenever he discussed about things like drug usage, promiscuity, and depression. The first song I ever heard by him was, perhaps like many, The Velvet Underground's classic, "Heroin." That song was always so otherworldly to me, and not because of its noisey abrasiveness, but because he was able to write a song about a guy shooting up heroin and his thought process about it all, and make it sound so beautiful in the end. It's an unforgettable experience to listen to that song, the way it evolves in mood and sound so erratically. He was a genius, plain and simple. He will be missed by us all.

For further reading you can check out The Huffington's article and their brief summary of Lou Reed's professional career:

I know that some of the users already made lists as a tribute to Lou Reed, but I felt a news article would be an appropriate addition as well. Also, like in my Ray ‪Manzarek‬ article, I was thinking that as a tribute to Lou Reed we could post youtube links of our favourite songs by him in the comments sections.

This sucks, RIP. He seemed a lot better in the past few months and wanted to work on a new record as far as I know. I am not Reed's biggest fan, but he influenced a lot of bands and genres.

Here's one of the tracks I like most. "Vicious" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM9JG-oQm1Y

I'm a big fan of his work with Velvet Underground. I actually believe that his days with the band were the very best of his career. Afterwards, he went solo, which I believe is very mediocre.

Ok, so lets say one or two classic albums and about 15-16 mediocre albums. Is that a good analogy for a superb solo career ?

I tried to get into him and Velvet Underground for a while, never really saw the draw though my brother would argue that for hours. That said, any fan of classic rock has heard one of his songs on the radio, and his influence on rock music is undeniable, so Rock in Peace, Lou.

It fucking sickens me that people are whining about Lulu. Yeah it was bad but artists who push the
envelope like Lou Reed are bound to have one or two stinkers. If you think Lulu's dreadful, try
listening to Metal Machine Music - making it through that is the ultimate tribute. However, to suggest
these duds have stained him and his legacy shows complete ignorance to the impact he's had on music.

How anyone could think of his solo career as mediocre is beyond me. I personally prefer it to The Velvet Underground. Berlin is an absolute masterpiece, Transformer is the pinnacle of glam, The Blue Mask is one of the better 80's rock records out there, and Street Hassle has aged quite well in retrospect.
