SOAD Hiatus Update

2006-12-28 by Jom | 27 Comments
Back in May, it was reported that System of a Down were taking a hiatus (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/news.php?newsid=418). An update has been announced on the state of the band, courtesy of World Entertainment News Network:

The band insists that they are not splitting up, but admit an uncertain musical future. John Dolmayan, Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian, and Shavo Odadjian announced their hiatus from the band earlier this year to work on separate projects, [a]nd frontman Tankian believes the break was long overdue.

I've wanted to make my solo record for years, but I just haven't had the time. For the last eleven years we've all been wedded to this band, and now we want to take a break. I honestly don't know if [SOAD] are over or no. Maybe in a few years we'll want to make another album. It's impossible to tell right now. It'll be later down the line that we'll be able to tell what might happen.

The band is also featured in a new documentary called Screamers, which is about the history of genocide throughout the 20th century. The film premiered in Los Angeles earlier this month and will reportedly expand to other cities in January.

You should just go away forever.
That being said, Mezermize/Hypnotize sucked.
I reckon Serj's album will be well worth buying and Daron's will be well worth burning (literally, meaning in a fire). John's will also be pretty cool.

I agree that Serj's might be worth buying. But the only thing I find wrong with Daron is that he can't sing for anything.

John seems like a cool guy. I listened to an interview with him and he was pretty adamant about SOAD not breaking up.

I almost, almost want them to not get back together because I was at their last show, and how awesome would it be to say that.

That being said, Hyponotize was an excellent album, probably their third best, but Mezmerize is undoubtedly their worst.

Daron could only sing in "Lost In Hollywood" and his vocals just didn't work when he leaded other songs on Mezmerize/Hypnotize. I say Daron should either just stick to playing guitar and background vocals or he should go solo and let the band replace him with a different guitarist.

I'm glad their taking a break. I think if they tried to make another album in the next couple years or so it would turn out just awful. This way if they come back to the studio they will be more fresh and eager.

I guess Serj's record might be pretty cool. As for Daron, kudos to his family for being the only people to own a copy.

At least Daron's record might be better than K-Fed's.

as long as daron's solo album is instrumental or with guest vocalists, it might be worth a listen, but its fair to say the guy can't sing for shit.

serj's would be interesting, im envisioning an armenian themed version of mr bungle for some reason...

I like Serj, but Daron is wanker, he's pretty much penned all of the soad music though, instrumentally he pretty much kicks ass.

I just hope that if they make a new album, DARON STOPS SINGING! It's an assault on the ears to hear his prepubesant yelping... oy ve, and Serj's may be interesting but i don't see it being any different from SOADs other stuff, mainly their first album..

For the people saying that Serj's material will be the same as SOAD, you should check out his previous side project Serart. It's extremely unique and original and doesn't resemble SOAD in any way. It'd pretty much straight up middle-eastern music and I couldn't even put in in any genre except other.

I hope they do get back together sometime, but I agree that they do need a break.
