I haven't felt this sad over a musician dying in a long time. It's probably because they are my second favorite band and I listen to them non-stop. Ray was one hell of a musician. I never knew he had a drug problem. RIP my friend.

Yes, he was the vocalist...and a damn good one too. I'm still in shock over this.
If you want to get into the band, start with Warflower.

I'm particularly sorry for both you and Brick, PayneTiger, their biggest fans of the site. I got into the band last summer thanks to you guys.
Sorry for the family and friends obviously.
RIP Ray
|

I listened to their live album they posted on their Facebook today... I had completely forgot I was at that show when they recorded it at Fletchers. Between Lullaby and Jack Nicholson; we are the Cleveland fans that drove up to see 'em that they shout out to!
I will miss Ray alot. These guys will always be my fav.
If you haven't listened to them yet, please do.

"Warflower" on repeat for the rest of my life.
R.I.P, Ray-Ray.

Ray was a complicated man. Simply putting it down as a heroin overdose is not completely accurate or fair. Calling him retarded is just plain asinine. Ray was not a heroin addict. He certainly had his issues and it’s no secret that self medicating was one of them. There was a complex history of issues and experiences, some of which were quite heavy. We will leave the details out of it. It was all part of what made Ray who he was and a lot of the intense emotional expression that came through his music is tied to and came from those experiences. He was also a hard man to reach out to when it came to deep personal matters.
He was very proud and very sensitive. He was also very shy and very much a private person in many ways. He wrestled with his demons but any substance abuse was just a symptom of the inner battles that he waged. He was a difficult guy to work with, a challenging guy to be friends with, very frustrating at times. He was also one of the greatest singer song writers I have ever heard, one of the most real artists you could ever experience and a really genuine soul. There was no posing or pretending to be something he wasn't. What came through in his music was all very real.
He had the goods for sure, and he had more than his share of baggage. In the end it was, perhaps, all those numerous issues that conspired against him and he fell under the weight that he had to shoulder for so long. He was not, however, some bright talent who just happened to be playing with heroin.
So please - I understand people have strong feelings against drug use but calling Ray "retarded" or labeling him as a "heroin addict" is especially painful for those of us who were close to him and shared his struggles.
Ray - you are greatly missed brother. I'm sorry if we couldn't always be there for you or didn't have the strength or skills to reach you. Regardless, you were always loved and still loved. We are all richer for having known you and for what you have given us. I will miss the music and the magic of singing with you. There’s a hole in my heart. Rest easy now my friend - your works is done. Peace.
|
| |
I was really hesitant to post that it was an od, knew that a lot of people would attack based off that..it sucks
|
| |
Well understandable - it's the first thing everyone asks right? "What happened?" Don't get me wrong - I'm just as pissed off about it as everyone else and I have strong feelings about drug use in general. I just want everyone to know that Ray was not a dope fiend and while he may have been damn stubborn and stupid at times, he certainly wasn't retarded. I'm not trying to start anything - I'm just so awash in grief and I felt I had to stand up for him. The picture was just so much more complicated than most people realize.
|
| |
I really do wish that I knew more about ray but their really isn't any information about his life, and from his lyrics you can get a little insight into his life. I am desperately trying to come up with enough money so I can fly there wednesday for that tribute to him. I would love to get the chance to talk to people who actually knew him and to hear their stories
|
| |
Wow, that's powerful.
Seriously though, I don't know what idiot would call anyone who does drugs or OD'd an idiot. I've had many friends in the past who did drugs because it was their only escape from this horribly cruel life... It's sad when people don't bother getting to know the real deal, or what the truth is.
The man was so talented though, his voice and lyrics were way above par.
|
| |
Another brick - I hope you can make it this Wednesday. I will be there around 9pm. You can ask around for Ray's friend Jim. Ray was pretty guarded about the details of his life and much of that will remain private as far as I am concerned. But I'd be happy to share some stories about Ray. He was quite the character and you'll find plenty of people there who will give you some insight to him.
|
| |
I would like to thank those who left kind words in his memory here.
For those of you that did not know Ray personally, know that he was beautiful, and broken.
While much of his life's tragedies endured were not his fault, know that many of his demons were of his doing....but this is true for most everyone.
Being close to Ray was to know both overwhelming joy and tremendous heartache... both equally intense.
When we would play music we gave everything. Exposed everything... opened up and let it all just pour out. Unapologetic, vulnerable, and unafraid. As our show's set's ended.... emotionally drained, exhausted, winded, and physically spent... .... we would come together and all embrace each other, a reassurance that it was o.k., that what just happened was something real, something special. There was a tenderness to... and it was powerful.
It is an experience that most people will never know nor understand. I am proud to say that I shared this with Ray.
Many of you know Ray from chance encounters here and there, or simply know him through his music.... but there is so much more to his story. Life is not simple, nor is it black and white. It is a complex smattering of shades of gray....
Ray's gray had a bright silver lining.... brighter that most.
While his passing is tragic.... he left a legacy, and a memory, of things wonderful. That is how I wish to celebrate his life.
I miss you Ray.
Thanks for handing me that ticket.... Peridon is beautiful brother.
