Limewire shuts down

2010-10-27 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 170 Comments
A Manhattan district court has deemed Limewire illegal and ordered its owners to immediately suspend its peer-to-peer services.

The case will resume in January, when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) pleads for damages dating back 10 years. The RIAA is demanding at least $150,000 (the minimum penalty) in damages per infringement, meaning the final figure could potentially extend to hundreds of millions.

A statement on Limewire's website reads: "This is an official notice that LimeWire is under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software. Downloading or sharing copyrighted content without authorization is illegal."

It is understood that Limewire will now go ahead with plans to launch as a legal music download site in partnership with the music industry. The planned launch of a similar service, Spoon, fell through earlier this year as record labels felt it would not be implemented quickly enough.

RIAA is retarded if they think this accomplishes anything though.

Limewire is the most inefficiant P2P service so I don't really care that it's gone, but who do the RIAA expect to pay that kind of money? The creators? Because they sure as hell can't afford it.

Yeah someguest, Limewire was a pretty recent one. Napster was all the rage before that and when that got shut down everyone settled on Kazaa and when that got killed off it was all to Limewire. Apparently Frostwire is the new thing for 14 year olds to download porn from, so I doubt this is going to do much in terms of stopping P2P programs.

What if mediafire goes next though?

Interesting fact. In business today we learned that since the creation of the internet "indie" (not the music but in the broadest sense possible) sales have actually increased by an exponential amount. So I did a bit of research. Turns out far more copies of Captain Beefheart- Trout Mask Replica have been sold since the internet then before it.

So basiclly the internet makes good artists make money and bad artists lose money.

The internet helps a lot of lesser known musicians expand their audience through review sites and websites that provide free previews under the artist and label's discretion, like Myspace. However, illegal downloads cost musicians and labels of all sizes a lot of money. I don't really care if anyone downloads music, but it's annoying when people try to rationalize it by convincing themselves that it's actually helping.

http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/how-much-do-music-artists-earn-online/

The goal of albums is to help you hear about the music so you go to the shows. Which is where the label gets the money to keep the band signed. The band themselves are not even guaranteed money from the tour if they get a contract that doesn't state it. The band signs a contract which includes how long they have to work for the label, how many albums they have to release (which leads to many rushed and crappy albums), and how much of a salary they get paid.

Be the legal hero all you want, the band sees next to nothing from album sales, their money comes from a contract with a label. Downloading will not make a band go broke, but if they are signed to a major label (such as Hurt was for Vol. 1 and 2) and you are a fairly unknown band who is also not drawing people to gigs then they will drop you. A lot of that on top of it is how willing a label is to invest into the artist as well. A better marketing campaign = more sales and downloads = more fans = better turnout at shows = equals more money for the label. Proof of this would be Hurt actually. Poorly advertised, lackluster support at shows dominated by other, major rock bands, and lots of downloading resulted on them being dropped from Capitol. Afterwards they released GttM independently on their managers label, and are still a healthy, working band.

Downloading -is- illegal, but don't bullshit people by telling them that the artist is losing millions of dollars because of it.

"I guess limewire is cool if your the bare-backing a whore type of guy."

Hahah JWT wins thread.

Also, I wonder if they're going to force Limewire to give up records, then go back through the past users raping the shit out of people? Can they do that? If so, FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

meh, as long as the RIAA stay this far behind us it's cool. But labels can't use last century's business model anyway, I mean short of corporate/government control of the internet (I'm looking at you North Korea) there's no way to suppress illegal downloads indefinitely.

and yeah mediafire ftw.

I miss those mp3s that had the same 20 seconds looped again and again.

Can remember being at a friend's house and him saying, "listen to this new White Stripes album - it's good but really repetitive". FFS.

Yeah, Limewire rocked so hard. My old 2003 PC will never be the same.

I like mediafire the most, especially when I find a user who likes all the same music I do.
