Double The Flaming Lips

Ah, summer. A time for fun, the beach, and the Flaming Lips. Summer is also a time to try new and exciting things - like parasailing, ziplining, sunburn competitions, and releasing a double-album. Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne is planning to do one of the above.

"Somewhere along the way it occurred to me that we should do a double album... Just this idea that you can kind of weave a couple of themes into there and you can sort of sprawl a little bit. Our past couple of records we've always had this little dilemma, like how many songs do you put on? How many instruments do you put on? What's the focus?"

One shouldn't expect mirror images of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots or At War With the Mystics, Coyne says, as the vibe from their new songs differs from their previous work. "I think with this there was an element of accidentally stumbling upon more spontaneous sort of freak-out stuff...So we just went with some of that and use those as sort of the bedrock of what we'd do later on with overdubs and lyrics and stuff like that. It sounds very exciting."
An adorable man, indeed.

Some songs are already being described: "Convinced of the Hex" is said to sound like Joy Division-meets-Miles Daves, and their John Lennon-inspired "I Don't Understand Karma"

Coyne is coining in for a late summer release date for their untitled family-size bag of songs (8-9 have already been cued to be on the album). The band sets the deadline for finishing their songs for June.
