The Pink Spiders Split 2008-06-26 by PietroCrespi | 8 Comments | Last week news surfaced that the bassist Jon Decious and drummer Bob Ferrari were leaving The Pink Spiders, citing unfair publishing rights given to frontman Matt Friction.

There is a thing called publishing, this is what people live off of when the are in a band. EVERY band splits publishing so that everyone I[n] the band is equal. I have lived off $30,000 for 3 years now since we signed that record deal. It's hard to play in a band when you dont have a car and another member has a brand new covertible. It's hard to go to band practice when you see all the great steaks, cookies, booze, a brand new hd big screen tv, about 100 dvds, new furniture, and all that s**t. There would be days i was starving and I would go to practice at his house and I would see that even the dog was being taken care of. Ryan adams even shares publishing and pays his band too. I wasn't allowed to write songs, so that me[a]ns no publishing. my heart was still in the band( which i started), I STARTED IT. My heart is not down when i am eating roman noodles and another guy is flying around to see friends for the h**l of it knowing d**n well I aint got s**t. When I cant pay my bills, which are all together $300 a month and that's just someone elses car payment alone, its time to go. When 2 people of a 3 p[ie]ce band quit, what does that say about the 3rd persons character?"

Matt Friction apparently plans to continue with the band and the current tour they are on. Their new album, Sweat It Out, is due September 23.

well that sucks.
matt friction sounds like a jerk
| | | That is a really shitty thing to do.
| | | Seriously, everyone should get equal pay.
| | | Never gave a damn about this band but that's still pretty crappy. Does they guy really think anyone is going to want to join his band after this is out?
| | | yea seriously. i dont even want to listen to the band after hearing this haha
| | | sounds like an ass to me.
not a big fan of the band, but hmm, guy's got a point in that last line there.
| | | NO not every band splits the publishing. That's totally false. The songwriter(s) gets that. In my band I will split some of the publishing with my band. But the person who wrote the song is the creator and deserves it.
Songwriting takes many hours and some people have the magic touch and some suck at it. I don't think it's fair to give someone songwriting credits if they didn't help write the song as he is wanting.
It's cool to split it all with your bandmates if that's what you want to do. I am doing that with my band, but not every song. I wrote most of them at home by myself! Many of the songs I wrote before I played with them.
Many musicians have been burned over the years by people taking their publishing and taking the money. But it is hard in this day and age for bands to make any money. The internet has been a disaster for bands for the most part. Sure they get exposure, but they don't make squat.
And now with gas the way it is, you can't hardly make any money touring.
I feel for the guy, but I think there is more to the money a band makes than the publishing. If I was the songwriter and I saw my band mates were having a hard time, I would give them some of my own take.
But where is the money from gigs, t-shirts, record sales and the rest? That sucks the drummer wasn't making anything.
It sounds like Matt thought he was the genius and another awesome band goes down the drain. That sucks. These guys were the next big thing.
They should have worked something out so everyone was sharing more of the money, but it's not just publishing. The drummer and bass player were cool as hell. Music history is littered with "superstars" that screwed up the good thing they had. Shame on Matt for not working something out before it was too late.
He should get on his knees and beg them back, and share more (not saying all) of the publishing royalties and whatever else with the band mates.
| | | And another thing.
The Pink Spiders had a string of bad luck. Bus burned down, lost equipment and then Geffen records is dead.
They should have been huge. But radio is full of Disney Crap, Emo or Metal. They didn't fall in any of these very well because they were too talented for the usual crap. Don't get me wrong, there are good bands in these genre's but it sucks the air out of the rest of the bands who don't fit.
Especially Disney. Kids used to buy the same records as the older Teens and 20 somethings but now they just buy this mass produced 'tween' crap like Miley, and before Britney and the rest of these monsters.
MTV and Disney are the devil.
And if you like a band, BUY SOME OF THEIR records or merch. Just listening to them and downloading some free songs doesn't mean you are a fan, loser (me included)!!!!!!!!!!This Message Edited On 08.04.08This Message Edited On 08.04.08This Message Edited On 08.04.08
