Meh, the intro is kind of weird sounding, and the bridge is really generic AFI. But the chorus and verses are pretty good, can't wait for the EP.This Message Edited On 06.16.08

Considering how much Decemberunderground sucked, I will be avoiding this like a plague.

^It was probably their worst since pre-Black Sails, but honestly I still loved Decemberunderground. I was listening to that just about every day for the longest time. Some of those songs, especially the first 6 or 7, are pretty killer.

meh... Even the good songs on that album bothered me as they weren't up to standards to some of the worst songs of their best albums. This Message Edited On 06.16.08

^Yeah well you're right, nothing compared to STS or even AOD.

Did you check out this song? It's much more STS-ish, reminds me of Girl's Not Grey, even with the wacky classic rock-ish intro. This Message Edited On 06.16.08

I really can't see how a band going in a different direction is selling out, then I suppose Radiohead sold out when they released Kid A?

I'm not sure that they sold out, but they definitely raked in the $$ with the new crowd they drew with DU.

They killed fans while simultaneously getting new ones, thus creating an equal amount.

Old Fans-Half of Old Fans + New Fans= Amount of Old fans!

Decemberunderground wasn't that bad guys. Honestly think they would have created something similar even without the whole "emo" thing, I think their image got them associated with that. I liked the whole "pretty" take on their sort of gothic tendencies though, at the risk of sounding seriously gay (not that there's anything wrong with that lawlz!) But it wasn't a sellout, they just love to mess around with a new sound each album.

they changed their sound in 1999 and have gone downhill ever since.

They changed their sound because Jade Puget is a f*cking genius and helped them realize what they always seemed to be reaching for tbh.

shut your mouth and open your eyes was ****ing brilliant

It really wasn't, sorry. Lyrics weren't impressive at all, and soundwise it sounded like what a lot of hardcore punk bands from that area were doing at the time.

They drew in just as big a crowd with STS.

I was part of the crowd they drew in with STS. DU appeals to a more separate kind of crowd - it's an album I find neither good nor bad. I went to a show after they released DU and I couldn't count the number of girls between the ages of 12 -16.

These AFI threads are always the strangest. New kids talking shit about some of the best punk/hardcore albums of the 90s and older kids talking shit about some of the most popular punk/hardcore albums of the 00s.

I finally came around to enjoy STS and DU, but nothing will dethrone Black Sails & Art of Drowning IMO.

Better AFI than the Jonas Brothers or Soulja Boy.

Those are all good albums, but STS is better than those others dude. Seriously, it's one of those rare albums that take you to whole other world while you're listening to it, and frankly, it was way more original AND enjoyable than Black Sails and AOD. Honestly I believe STS is probably the best album of the 00's, and if not, it's at least in the top 10.

you seem to be missing the fact that it sounded BETTER than what a lot of hardcore punk bands were doing at that time. from your music tastes its pretty easy to discern the fact that you like a more radio friendly type of music, therefore the new afi appeals to you, but their early cds were great hardcore.

All true, but I will say I used to be into a lot of hardcore when I was a young skater kid back in the day. I liked the little I was hearing from AFI at that time, but still preferred others, especially Bad Religion, and the Misfits (who early AFI sounded just like). But you're definitely right, these days I prefer a more poppish ride and that probably does have something to do with me being more open to STS and DU.
taking bad opinions to a whole new level
Na man, STS changed my life and I know a lot of others who felt the same. I think a lot more cred should be given to STS (along with Jimmy Eat's stuff at the time) for trampling that nu metal sh!t into the ground. It restored my hope in contemporary music after becoming one of those "classic-rock-is-the-only-good-rock" kids for a while.

Sing The Sorrow is AFI's best album, I have AOD, and it just has very similar songs and doesn't convey anything like Sing The Sorrow does.

Yup, the biggest reason why pre-STS can never really be called better than STS. Good for a blast of anger before hitting the half pipe? Yup. Good to listen to for a whole album's length? Not a chance.

Agreed. Love the song more the more I listen to it actually. Can't wait for this EP (they're also working on an album).

AFI after Sing The Sorrow was...well...

listen to anything pre BSITS and then listen to DU. You will get a pretty good idea of why the older hxc fans have already abandoned the band, sadly. Kill Caustic was the only thing vaguely in line with some older stuff.
