Needs another track don't you think? Way too long a wait for 4 new songs. Now I just hope they get the next damn album done before the end of the year.

finally... I was wondering about this just today. Can't wait.

If they can manage to maintain threads of their current sound while still reaching back to their creative punkish style (maybe another Sing The Sorrow), I'll be very happy. Decemberunderground was painfully average.

^123. Yeah this is pretty short, but so was All Hallow's EP which is probably my favorite EP in my collection.
|
| |
Decemberunderground was so bad compared to their older stuff and even Sing The Sorrow. I hope they don't continue with that sound too heavily.

Decemberunderground grew onto me. Been listening to it a lot lately actually. But nothing will ever beat STS. I still think that's one of the best rock albums of the new millenium.
As for the people hoping for a more punk sound, you can all but count out it: Jade said in an interview shortly after CexCells with Blaqk Audio that he really wanted to make a more guitar-oriented album this time. They're even recording in the same studio they did some of their old stuff in. So I definitely think they're going for a more punk feel. I actually have the opposite worry: that they'll dig too far back and lose out on some of the great evolutions they've made since 2003.This Message Edited On 04.15.08

Just because its going to be more guitar oriented doesnt make it automatically punk. It would be nice though. And The Art of Drowning is better than STS in my opinion.

STS is one of my favourite records and easily the best AFI record.
Can't wait to hear some new AFI.

Word.

True. Probably does mean at least less pop though, but either way it'll be fun to see. AFI has a preternatural ability to get me excited about their upcoming releases. I'm hoping for their best yet, although STS is hard to top imo. Still think that album didn't get enough recognition, it should have made them huge. This Message Edited On 04.15.08

Decemberunderground made them huge, which is a shame. It had a few good tracks though and if they can make all their tracks like that I'll be happy.
|
| |
^^True it did. They could make this one better though and get even "huger." Like household name, Nirvana-huge. That'd be cool.
As a somewhat unrelated note, anyone else finding it kinda funny that all the pop-punk bands are "going back to their roots" at once? "Hey, the music press said we were all following the same trends! So lets all do the same thing at once so they can say it again!"This Message Edited On 04.15.08

Oh come now, did you guys even listen to Black Sails or The Art of Drowning? Sing the Sorrow was a huge letdown for me, but as much as I hated Decemberunderground initially (gothic bon jovi?), it has actually started growing on me.
|

This is the only thing that annoys me about this and any other punk band that improves over time-- they all have annoying, snobbish fans who demean people and assume they're stupider and less informed about the band in question than they are.
Yes. I've listened to all their albums. Their real early stuff absolutely sucked ass, Black Sails was good but not great, The Art of Drowning was a great punk album. STS is a great piece of art. It is better in every way than their previous albums. This Message Edited On 04.15.08

It'll definitely make them a bigger name. Since Decemberunderground, Jade has appeared in more guitar magazines and Davey has been getting interviewed by more websites and such. Their music got around to people who hardly knew their name. Theyre obviously going to be in the spotlight for their new material, and because the mass of listeners in this world will praise anything atleast mediocre, AFI's probably going to get a bigger fanbase.
|
| |
I actually like Black Sails the most, but whatever. I'll definitely give this new EP a chance, but my expectations are low.
|
| |
I'm with you /. Black Sails was incredible. Shut Your Mouth and Art of Drowning were both close seconds. Those were my favorite AFI years. I liked Sing the Sorrow, but clearly recognized they were going in a different direction.
December was too much into their experimental world and I wish they would revert to more of the breakneck punk days. But who am I to ask AFI to play what I like? They're the geniuses that put all this music together, so I have to live with whatever they put out.
One thing I never worry about is Davey's lyrics. They always go beyond anything I could expect.
