Nine Inch Nails Nets $750K 2008-03-06 by Trey STAFF | 12 Comments | Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor sold out of a $300 edition of the band's new album after offering free music online.
Fans bought 2,500 copies of the ultradeluxe edition of the new album, "Ghosts I-IV", offered at the same time as free tracks and other music packages that begin as low as $5. The most expensive option sold out in three days, and activity on the Web site crashed its servers.
Reznor gave fans the choice of downloading four digital albums for $5, downloading the same package and receiving a CD for $10, downloading some of the songs free, or buying various pricier packages with additional content and features, like video and slide shows, starting at $75.
He also licensed Ghosts I-IV, a 36-song production, under a Creative Commons license that allows fans to copy and distribute the music they buy.
Reznor's pricing scheme appears more successful than Radiohead's attempt last year to sell albums while allowing fans to pick their price.
Radiohead's In Rainbows lacked copyright protection, and the band never released statistics on the number of downloads or the prices paid. However, Radiohead did stop offering the album free after the CD went on sale in stores, leading many to speculate that the promotion failed to harness profits.

as soon as people stop losing their shit over buying music online sales will flatten
| | | Reznor did it right, Radiohead didn't. basically.
| | | I didn't expect the $300 copies to sell out so quickly, but I guess in hindsight I should have. The $10 version was enough for me.
| | | CC is awesome, he did a fine job with this. I wouldn't compare his attempt to Radiohead's though, Trent Reznor is not as unnecessarily shady as they are...it's never hard to tell what NIN is trying to do because he actually employs the spokesperson in himself.
| | | Does Reznor need another 750K?
| | | Let's get this straight:
Reznor is a GOD. This marks something unseen and very, very exciting. I do have to say, if your going to attack the music industry, this is how to do it.
He is crafty though. $300 for a ultra-mega-oh-my-god-deluxe edition. He must have known that it would sell fast. Some will say he's a hypocrit but a man's gotta make money and this is the way to do it!
This closes (for now) the Year Zero world and opens up new doors into the future for NIN and Trent Reznor. This is music. This is NIN (sorry if I sound really weird, I'm just so god-damn excited!!!!!)
| | | He probably did realise the $300 versions would sell to obsessive fans but it does sound like he has put together something worth $300(to an obsessive fan) so fair play i reckon.
| | | I think the success of this comes from catering to all possible fans, the casual/cheap fan can download the first part of Ghosts for nothing, the whole thing is only $5 (which I happily spent, knowing that it goes directly to NIN), then for people who like CDs they offer that for a mere $10, then the hardcore packages for the hardcore fans.
Radiohead tried something different, but I think the result was expected. They offered their whole album for free, unlike NIN who released a taste for free, and a slight fee for the rest. I think Radiohead would have done better with that kind of model.
Not to mention that the downloads are available in several formats which is a nice touch, as I like FLAC when possible.
Granted myself and others had problems downloading, I got mine eventually. I wasn't mad though, revolutions are never without any pain :D
Well done Trent, well done
| | | I just hope CDs/hard copy of whatever never go out. To me there's nothin like givin a cd it's first spin and listenen to it all the way through. Add the fact that album covers/insideds are apart of the band's creativity. That's why i'm tryin to rebuy all my burned albums.
| | | i'm going to be honest. i think the main reason this worked for trent and not for radiohead is NIN fans seem to have a high respect for the music. it's showing in the sales. i mean everyone of these people could have just got the album for free and trent probably wouldn't have cared. instead people have shown appreciation by giving their money. a lot of it.
not saying anything is wrong with radiohead or their music. i love them actually. i just think the proof is in the money.
as far as does trent need $750k,i think people have to realize most of this money will probably go into any future tour or recording. so for those who want to see NIN in the future this is ensure that. it's like an insurance policy that we all pay into
also,i'm drunk.
ha!
| | | ya I bought the $10 copy because I like to have a hard copy on my favorite artists.
Trent pwns Radiohead...radiohead had a couple decent album but really they are extremely overated in the indie crowd.
| | | I still got the album for free.
NOT SO HIGH AND MIGHTY NOW ARE YOU TRENT?!!
