In a recent interview with UK's Rock Sound magazine, Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor discussed the songwriting process for the group's new album.

It's a long, arduous process. We've got a skeleton for the whole record and these huge chunks of music four of five different segments that don't have a beginning or end yet...

... [w]e're just basically in the middle of the record, adding stuff, giving it a taste then adding a little more 'pepper' or 'salt.' Once all the ingredients are in there, you have to bake it — which is just playing it over and over again until it feels right. The main goal is to get the songs right so you don't have to think about the time changes — so you can relax with it and play it how it should be played.

There's a level of difficulty to our stuff and if you're too wrapped up in trying to remember how many times something goes and the timing for the next riff, you can't examine the song for being a song. So it takes awhile.

So far, only one new title has been revealed: "The Ghost of Karilla".

Said Dailor: I don't want to give the theme away, but I think the song title will leave a few people guessing. It's top secret. I can't divulge that information. It's more fun keeping it under wraps, but you can be assured that it's definitely another Mastodon record which is going to [go] further in a couple of different directions and the stuff we've written so far is heavier than I expected.

Umm the first few albums they put out sure sounded like they were just interested in hallucinogenics!

This is going to be a solid album. They have only got better with each release!

Cool. Sounds like it may take a while for it to be release though so I'm going to try and not think about it.

i like the cover, a lot. i want it on my ipod!

and yeah, sorry haters but Mastodon's probably the single strongest metal band in the world right now, only Opeth can come close to challenging their 100% impeccable discography.

it's a shame that mastodon has become one of those bands that it's cool to hate

This is a shame! People's perspective on popularity and metal is so skewed! Fucking Faggots!

Always the cynic, eh Cocaine? Though I agree its a familiar and often deceptive statement.

Possibly heavier will mean a return to a more Leviathan-esque sound...

i find it ridiculous that it's "trendy" to hate some metal bands.

I think Remission/Leviathan/Blood Mountain are all at a similar degree of goodness but are all good in different ways.

i prefer Leviathan to Blood Mountain

I'm just the opposite. I think they're both great albums, but Blood Mountain is their best IMO.
