Deftones In-Studio

2007-12-08 by renegadestrings | 19 Comments
After the release of 2006's "Saturday Night Wrist," Deftones are already hard at work on their next, as of now, untitled LP. This is great news for fans who usually have to wait a solid 3 to 4 years for new material. According to a recent in-studio update from the band's Myspace blog,

"there's about 6 to 8 songs finished, and we hope to have a few more completed before we break."

The band also commented on the approach they're taking to their latest work,

"As some of you may have read, we've taken a different approach to writing this record than we have the past few years, and so far it's been a lot of fun. The material seems to be flowing freely, and each song is different from the other. We feel like we're accomplishing what we set out to do, which is to write a record that pushes boundaries for us creatively."

No word yet on a release date.

This sounds like great news, I can't wait for the new record. But isn't Chino touring with Team Sleep right about now? If so, how does he get the time to record?

Looking forward to this. The Deftones are one of the better nu-metal bands to survive that era of metal.

I'd hardly consider Deftones nu-metal. The only record that can even be remotely be considered nu-metal can be Adrenaline.

anyways, I wanna see more songs like the instrumental on SNW. This Message Edited On 12.08.07

Definitely nu-metal by my standards........ie. Drop D power chords, easy song structures, no solos etc. The only thing that really puts these guys above most nu-metal bands is their use of atmosphere. And damn, are they ever good at that.

What also would count for some Metalcore and Sludge Metal bands. Deftones don't fit in the description of nu-metal, therefore they are not nu-metal. I'd see them more as a experimental metal band.

I hope this record will finaly be the next White Pony.

Are you kidding me? Drop D power chords are pretty much the basis for most nu-metal bands. Also, they happened to get really big riding the wave of the brief nu-metal era. They definitely add more experimentation into their music, but alot of songs on their last album have nu-metal written all over them....Rapture, Hole in the Earth, Rats!Rats!Rats etc.

^^ LOL
I'm going to have to side with wizard on this. They are more nu-metal than anything else. GOOD nu-metal though. Progressive, heavy, powerful nu-metal.

Hole in the Earth? Nu-metal? No freaking way.

I personally feel that a lot of nu-metal involved a lot of rapping elements, and Adrenaline had its share of that, although I consider the album as more metal than nu-metal.

But yeah, it's much more experimental than nu-metal, there's maturity and texture in its songwriting, with soundscapes and many other alternative elements that sets them apart totally from their competitors. It's just a times thing to be honest.

Hole in the Earth also has some processed delayed guitar tracks in U2 style, which I hardly call nu-metal. And most of their songs are not in drop D funny enough. Their song structures vary due to their alternative style and no solos thing is deemed unnecessary in context to their music.

But that's just MY view. And it's right.

Not all nu-metal has rapping in it.
I think what is happening here is that when you label a band nu-metal, everybody looks at it as a bad thing. Nu-metal has some really descent bands with talent and the Deftones fit the criteria, as I stated above, and do it far better than the rest of the bands from that genre by incorporating more elements of electronics and ambience into their music. But when you get right down to it, they are based in nu-metal.
And most of their songs are not in drop D funny enough.
Ive played guitar for about 8 years and the only album that was not Drop-D was Adrenaline. This Message Edited On 12.09.07

Hahahah whatever. I don't even know why I try arguing anymore. Anybody can be an ignorant retard on here and not have to justify their answers (unlike gimo80).

Definitely looking forward to this. Unless it sounds like 2003's selftitled, it should be fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

Adrenaline - E Standard Tuning

Around the Fur - Drop D

White Pony - Dropped C Tuning

SNW - B Tuning

so I guess it's not just Drop D power chords...

nope you're right... although on SNW they have it tuned differently for some songs. i can play "hole in the earth" in drop-d and it sounds identical to the album, still most of the songs use the 7-stringer bottom end

Speaking of 7-string, I own the Stephen Carpenter signature ESP 7-string but can't get used to it except for playing Lacuna Coil songs.

Nu-metal or not, Def Tones are a fresh departure from a lot of other bands from that era and are hard to put in one specific genre.

White Pony - Dropped C Tuning

SNW - B Tuning

I can play a majority of those albums on my guitar and they sound perfect in Drop D. Regardless, these guys still play the Helmet type of power chords which makes them nu-metal. I will not give up on that fact.
