Imogen Heap's 20th anniversary

Imogen Heap has announced a 20th anniversary remaster of her seminal album Speak for Yourself, out October 17.

Released in 2005, the album’s standout track, "Hide and Seek," became a surprise hit with its vocoder-laced a cappella delivery, recorded after a computer crash forced Heap to experiment with a Digitech Vocalist Workstation EX. The track reached mainstream attention via The O.C.'s season 2 finale.

However, it truly went viral in 2007 thanks to SNL’s “Dear Sister” parody, which turned its “Mmm whatcha say” refrain into a meme phenomenon. Funny enough, the skit also featured a young Shia LaBeouf before his Transformers stardom.

That same line reemerged in Jason Derulo’s 2009 hit "Whatcha Say," which brought her songwriting to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Heap was credited as a co-writer and the track was later certified 4-times Platinum.

Beyond mainstream pop, Heap’s work resonated deeply in internet music culture. Clams Casino’s "I’m God," built from a sample of Heap’s "Just for Now", became a cult anthem after appearing on Lil B’s album 6 Kiss in 2009.

Though unofficial for years, the track was finally cleared and officially released in 2020 under the joint credit Clams Casino & Imogen Heap.

Ariana Grande reimagined "Goodnight and Go" for her 2018 album Sweetener, earning Heap a co-writing credit. Grande has cited Heap as a major influence and even performed live using Heap’s Mi.Mu gesture-control gloves. Additionally, artists like A$AP Rocky, Mac Miller, and XV (feat. Kendrick Lamar) have sampled or drawn from songs like “Just for Now,” “Headlock,” and “Goodnight and Go.”

Heap’s songs have been heavily sampled, reinterpreted, and woven into the early fabric of YouTube. Tracks like "Let Go," "Headlock," and "Just for Now" were staples in fanmade AMVs and fandom edits, especially within Star Wars, anime, and early Tumblr-era video communities. The emotional openness of Heap's music made it ideal for grassroots remix culture. Platforms like Vine later amplified this further, with the “Mmm whatcha say” line becoming one of the site’s most widely memed audio clips.

Whether through chart-topping hits, underground classics, or viral fan tributes, Imogen Heap’s music has shaped pop, hip-hop, and internet art alike. The upcoming remaster isn’t just a retrospective, but a reminder of how influential Heap’s music has been.

It's wild to trace how it all started and the ripple effects that followed. The album first got some attention when a track was featured on a TV show. But it really took off after the viral comedy skit that also featured a very young Shia LaBeouf before his Transformers stardom.

Later a sample from the same album was used by Clams Casino on “I’m God".. which Lil B rapped over.. helping launch his career and influence a generation of cloud rappers. Lil B in turn was a major influence on Timothée Chalamet:

Even now remixes using samples from that album still pull in hundreds of thousands of plays on YouTube:

She’s still one of my favorite artists ever even if she hasn’t done much noteworthy in a long time. Wasn’t really a fan of Chordata, and Sparks was just OK. That said, her Happy Song does wonders for my kids so there’s that.

I obviously understand why she put out H&S first, but I can’t virtually tell any difference between it and the original lol

One of the most, if not the most, influential artist in the Pop realm in the last 30 years. I would love to have 1/10th of her talent. Ariana Grande's version of Goodnight and Go was superb confirmed. Hide and Seek was never really one of my personal favorites, but nothing on that album was bad imo. Her work in Frou Frou doesn't get mentioned a lot, but that album is killer as well.
