RIP Funk Queen Betty Davis 2022-02-10 by Cyan isn't a shade of blue. | 18 Comments | Betty Davis (nee Mabry), has passed on February 9th, 2022. The reported reason was from natural causes. She was 77.
She is best remembered as the wife of legendary jazz musician Miles Davis and for inspiring his foray into funk music on albums like Bitches Brew and On the Corner. Miles' tune "Mademoiselle Mabry" was also named for her.
Davis has a musical legacy of her own. Her work is a particularly raunchy and feminist brand of funk-rock. She had a cult following despite little commercial success. Music artists Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae have both cited her as an important influence on their work.
Janelle Monae has been quoted saying: "She's free, and she's one of the godmothers of redefining how black women in music can be viewed. I respect her a lot and she's opened up a lot of doors for artists like myself."
