New Ging Nang Boyz album

Legendary Japanese punk band Ging Nang Boyz have just released their first new album in 6 years, titled Ne- minna daisuki dayo (Hey, I Love You All). It is their first studio album without original members Murai Mamoru (drums), Abiko Shinya (bass) and Chin Nakamura (guitar), all of whom left the band just as Ging Nang Boyz were completing their previous albums Hikari no Naka ni Tatte Ite ne and Beach.

Frontman/songwriter Mineta Kazunobu nevertheless decided to keep the band going, and remains the sole official member of Ging Nang Boyz. Over the past five years, Mineta assembled a backing band of unofficial "support" members to perform live with him and play on Ging Nang Boyz records, including this latest album: guitarists Kanji Yamamoto (ex-The Cigavettes) and Ryouta "P-chan" Katou (2, ex-Ponytail Sclimb); as well as bassist Hiroshi Fujiwara and drummer Kenji Okayama, both of whom were members of the hugely popular band Andymori. Also appearing on the new album are veteran keyboardist and longtime Ging Nang Boyz collaborator Dr.kyOn (of Bo Gumbos); singer-songwriter Ucary Valentine who did programming on several tracks; and none other than Yuki, the former frontwoman of Judy and Mary, one of Japan's all-time best-selling bands. Yuki previously contributed guest vocals to one of Ging Nang Boyz's two debut albums over 15 years ago.

The album features new versions of all five singles that Ging Nang Boyz released over the past five years: 2016's "Ikitai"; "Angel Baby", "Hone" and "Koi wa Eien" (the 2017 "Love and Rock" trilogy); and "Ichigo no Uta", the theme song from the 2019 film of the same name, which was adapted from a novel inspired by the lyrics of Ging Nang Boyz. It also includes "Otona Extermination", a new version of "Don't Trust Over Thirty", the opening song from Going Steady's 1999 album Boys & Girls which was the first studio album that Mineta ever made. The fourth song on the album, "Amen, Semen and Mary Chain", was completed by Mineta at 2am in a London graveyard and debuted the following night at Hackney Empire as part of an acoustic set opening for Carl Barat and Pete Doherty of the famed British band The Libertines.

Ne- minna daisuki dayo was originally intended for release earlier in the year, but production was stalled due to the onset of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The band also postponed their summer headlining tour until next year, and was forced to cancel a scheduled concert at the 17,000-seater venue Yokohama Arena, which was set to surpass their 2017 sold-out Nippon Budokan arena show as the biggest concert of their career thus far. As health restrictions in Japan began to ease, work on the album resumed and finally ended in July. In the lead-up to the release of the new album, Ging Nang Boyz held a livestream concert on August 12 and released the new book Don't Trust Ging Nang Boyz on September 9. They also reissued the long out-of-print vinyl editions of their 2005 debut albums on August 29 for the first "drop" day of Record Store Day 2020; the reissue was completely sold out by the end of the day, with many stores running out of in-store copies by noon, and online stocks being exhausted within 30 minutes of becoming available. In response to the immense demand, the records were promptly repressed and will be sold again this Saturday (October 24) for the third and final RSD "drop day".

Ging Nang Boyz will be holding another livestream concert on Boxing Day to make up for a cancelled performance that was planned for that day. The concert was to be held in Yamagata, the home prefecture of Mineta, Murai and Abiko, and would have been the first Ging Nang Boyz show in Yamagata in 15 years.

Lastly, Ging Nang Boyz have released a music video for "Do You Like Me", the opening track on the new album. The video was directed by Mineta and stars actor Taiga Nakano and actress Minori Hagiwara.
