SOAD to take a break

2006-05-03 by Alex101 | 27 Comments
System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian has told MTV.com that the band's headlining stint on this summer's Ozzfest will be the last time in a "a few years" that they be appearing onstage together under the System banner.

"I'll always be a member of System of a Down," he said. "That will never change. There's no rule that says you have to make records constantly, like clockwork, to continue being who you are. We want to live our lives, [because being in a band] really consumes a big part of your life, and sometimes you just want to stop and slow down. We started being just these guys in a band, and the next thing you know, everyone's asking for autographs. It plays with your head."

Malakian said, after this summer's Ozzfest — which will kick off in Seattle on June 29 and wrap up August 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida — System of a Down will go on "hiatus."

"We're not breaking up," Malakian insisted. "If that was the case, we wouldn't be doing this Ozzfest, because we're a little nervous" about trying to fill Ozzy Osbourne's shoes. Ozzy will be headlining just 10 of this year's Ozzfest dates, with System topping the bill on Ozzy's off days. "We're going to take a very long break after Ozzfest and do our own things," he added. "We've done System for over 10 years, and I think it's healthy for us to get away from it for a while and come back to it later on. So, this is probably going to be ... well, it's not a farewell tour, but it's going to be a little while before we go out again."

Well, maybe a break would do good, I mean the quality of the albums diminished after each one... I think a break would help put them back.

Perhaps now Daron can sit back, reflect on Mesmerise/Hyptonize, and realize how shit his voice is.

I'm sure they'll still be back before Tool makes another album, hah!

Daron Malakian's voice just totally grates on the ears, it's like torture listening to him squeal like that. Whoever told him he could sing needs a kick in the stones.

This is good. They just kept getting worse and worse. Their latest releases are horrid, in my opinion.

Its a shame. But then again they have made five albums in as many years, its understandable they want a break.

I guess they are waiting for more wars and government slip ups to sing about.

This probably means they'll be back in 5 years or something.

That's normal for Tool

Well this is somewhat of a bummer because I won't be able to catch them on Ozzfest this year.

When they reform, I bet they'll be quite epic.

I swear I remember SOAD saying they'll have a follow-up by next year or something... This is unexpected for me, and I never heard of any break-up rumors. Ah well.

Yeah, there was a news article not too long ago that there'd be a follow up either this year or in 2007, so I guess thats out the window. Nevermind though, even is this is actually the end, they've still left quite a large impact on the music industry. This Message Edited On 05.05.06

These guys are definitely not breaking up, theyre just taking a smart break. There's other bands out there that, when they tried to balance their regular lives with music, it never worked out. It's smart for any band to take somewhat of a break at some point.

Cant blame them wanting a break. But a few years? Thats a pretty long time. Im sure there will be some useless best of album.
Wasn't there a dif. news post on here earlier that stated that Daron was working on a side project? I need more info.

The record next year might be the leftovers from the mesmerize/hypnotize sessions, like steal this album!

I think they deserve a rest, that double album sounds epic, not amaaaazing, but still epic.

i think its a great idea, when they get bak to it in years to come they will be fresh, all good things must come to an end, but i personally hope that their new stuff is more like the self titled album as well as toxicity, in the meantime they have made plenty of funky tracks 2 last me through

I hope that this break will make them remamber their roots, classic system, serj all vocals (almost all) shavo getting decent bits and bass being brought out more, john getting a little more creative, and daron writing songs like he used to.

A break could be a good thing i guess but with the last two albums released, they are at the peak i think in there career. This band is monumental. They are great. I love their music. At least we know that they won't break up.

i agree. I've given these guys a chance. They suck like no other. The guitars are cool...everyone else sucks, the singing, the drumming isnt anything special, ands the bass isnt anything great either, not that its bad. the singing ruins it.

These guys just need to die off or go back to Mars.
