Sony drop Prince CD

Sony BMG have announced they will no longer be releasing Prince’s new album after his decision to give away thousands of copies for free.

The singer-songwriter has agreed to give away copies of 'Planet Earth’ with the Mail On Sunday, with ticket holders for one of his upcoming 21 gigs at London’s O2 Arena also receiving a CD.

oh, and Prince always causing a stir. i think its funny how retailers and the record companies are up in arms about him giving away music. like he owes them anything.

i kind of understand the record company being miffed, but this is great promotion, too. and the smart person knows a lot of people will be getting it for free, anyway. so why not join in?

i tihkn his move to give away copies to some concert goers is cool, too. imagine if major artist like him just decided to go into business for themselves and sell thier CD's as part of the ticket price for a show. for example $60 for a seat only, $68 if you want the new CD, too. and the artist and artist organization would be the only ones who sell it. and perhaps online stores like itunes, etc. could work, and i know some small acts have done this to some success.

DOWN WITH THE MAN! :smash:

hell yes.
Prince is an official corporate ass kicker for this (thats a good thing). It just proves that Sony Bmg, don't have their priorities straight about what their job is.

Good on him, doing something different. its good to see some record companies get scared about doing something against the grain, get out of your shells people. the hype and buzz around doing something like this will seel them more records anyway. word of mouth is a powerful tool

Prince knows how to handle the business side of things - he owns most of his own music and a mate of mine was saying how they actually study him in music production at his collage because of how he runs his music.

Can anyone find it in themselves to agree with sony on this one... WHo do they think they are telling an artist that he has to sell his art. Thats retarded

I didn't really respect his decision until now, as I assumed that the album would still be distributed ordinarily. Now, I have respect for him. And to billrhp2, either you made two contrasting points, or you tried to use sarcasm. If it was sarcasm, it shouldn't be. Why should they tell him that he has to sell it?

That clearly wasn't a question.
