New Botanist Stream

2014-08-06 by zaruyache | 15 Comments
The new album by San Franciscan black metal project Botanist have begun streaming their
newest album, VI: Flora, through The Flenser record label.

According to a press release by The Flenser:

"Flora focuses on the wondrous beauty of the plants themselves through a gauzy haze of
dream-like sound with the voice of The Botanist acting as spectral underpinning to the
reverie.
VI: Flora was recorded by Otrebor in the Verdant Realm and mastered by Jack
Shirley at Atomic Garden and is scheduled for an August 11th release on vinyl, CD and
digital formats
".

Yeah, I saw it posted last night :3 I've just never listened to these guys so I was unsure, but I'll definitely give it a listen.

I dunno. It's definitely not bad, and the whole "swapping guitars for hammered dulcimer" idea actually works for this band. Band is able to effectively trade tremolo riffs for fast dulcimer string riffage. It's cool, but the high-pitched dulcimer notes get on my nerves after a while.

Yo I love this, along with Wreck & Reference, there have been some stellar experimental black metal releases this year.

I enjoy this album a lot but the songs tend to suffer from having similar tones throughout. The sound walls that Botanist create are original and beautiful, but eleven songs that do close to the same thing is tough to make it through. Plus the closer on Flora is quite weak, especially for how ethereal and pretty the last half is. Will have a review ready for tomorrow.

I enjoy this more than the other Botanist albums, mainly because the overtones are so much more melodic, like 'Wisteria' is unbelievably harmonious and builds up so nicely.
