Lady S-O-V Slams Lily Allen 2007-02-23 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 13 Comments | The self-proclaimed 'angry chihuahua,' London's greatest export Lady Sovereign, had a little dig at Lily Allen during an interview with the Observer's music supplement earlier this week.
Lady Sovereign is currently promoting her new album in the US, where she's been taken under the wing of Def Jam mogul Jay-Z and is making substantial inroads in the ultra-competitive American market. When quizzed about contemporaries on the British hip-hop scene, she didn't have many nice things to say about Lily Allen:
"I'm not hating on her but someone like Lily Allen, just 'cause her dad [comedian Keith Allen] is famous, doesn't have to work as hard as someone like me." Worse, she says, indignantly, "you get some of the media hating people 'cause they're chavish but she's the biggest chav going."
Sovereign, who is refreshingly free of gimmicks, has seen her career stall in the UK over the past couple of years and has ventured to the US in a last-ditch attempt to raise her profile at home.
Ms. Allen, whose album Alright, Still was released stateside last month, has since had the time to comment: "In response to Miss Sovereign's comments, I've spoken to my dad and he says he'd be happy to adopt you if you think it will give you a leg up."

Lily thought about her comeback jab for ages before posting it on her MySpace page, so I think you're giving her too much credit, Jungler and Jacaranda. Sov was just speaking off the cuff in an interview. Apples and oranges. Lily is an ungrateful brat in just about every bit of press I've read and now she's canceled her remaining tour dates because she can't lay off the sauce. Sov, though mouthy at times, is more humble and seems more committed to making a name for herself here in the U.S. At least for now. She, too, is a boozer, so it wouldn't surprise me if she blew off her remaining dates as well. I like Lily's music, but her attitude sucks. People aren't going to be interested in her for very much longer with the way she's been carrying on, and then she will regret not having capitalized on her fame while she had it.
