Linkin Park meets prog rock? 2006-11-16 by Thor | 27 Comments |
Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda says fans should expect something a bit different when the group releases its third album next year. "There is an element to the album that will be familiar to people simply because it's the same guys making the music," he tells Billboard.com. "But at the same time, these guys have grown up quite a bit, and we definitely have a different mind state about making songs.
"Most importantly, we want to make stuff that's hopefully cutting edge and different," he continues. "I feel like we did what we wanted to do with 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Meteora,' and now it's time to step outside the box and try something new."
Shinoda says the band and producer Rick Rubin have narrowed about 100 song ideas down to 18 and will probably trim further before the album is finished. The MC says recording is "going really well" and that working with Rubin is "amazing ... really awesome."
"The thing about Rick that I love is he's unpredictable," Shinoda says. "He'll listen to a song and throw out an idea that seems completely out of nowhere, but it makes a lot of sense and it makes the song better." Shinoda adds that Rubin has steered band members towards recordings by Pink Floyd, Elton John, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer as reference points for different emotions and feels for the new songs. "The Moog (synthesizer) has been sitting in the studio since day one," Shinoda says with a laugh.
While Linkin Park continues to work on the album, Shinoda is stepping out for the first-ever gallery showing of his visual art. "Diamonds Spades Hearts Clubs" opens Sunday (Nov. 19) at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. The exhibit features 10 paintings he did for "The Rising Tied," the 2005 debut by his side project, Fort Minor, plus other original works and five collaborative paintings with other artists, including Linkin Park DJ Joe Hahn.
"I always wanted to do a gallery show," says Shinoda, who will sign autographs at Sunday's opening reception. "Every single person coming to this thing has no idea what they're walking into. Nobody has seen all this work up at the same time in this way. You may have the Fort Minor album, but seeing a six-inch representation of the artwork is far different than seeing a 24-inch painting on the wall. When you come and see the layers of paint and the real thing in front of you, it'll make more sense."

hasn't prog rock suffered enough?
|

Floyd? Now they'll get even more boring.

This album is still going to suck, no matter how cliche his description of the new stuff is going to be ie. "We are going to step out of the box and try something new". How many bands have said that and faultered. Please break up, and do music a favour. This Message Edited On 11.16.06

Im glad they are taking a different approach to their new stuff. I cant even imagine what they would sound like if they went progressive :amaze:
|
| |
Because Opeth is so exciting, right?
|
| |
I think the new album is going to be good. Rick Rubin has helped put out tons of good records in the past, I dont see why this should be an exception. Mike and Joe Hahn are really good artists if you've ever seen any of thier stuff.

hahaha

I can't imagine what they'll sound like either, but I'm actually excited to hear it.
|

I think this will be good. Rick Rubins great
|
| |
Yeah, I have faith in Rick Rubin that this won't suck too hard.

Rubin has too much on his shoulders with Linkin Park and Metallica not sucking already.
|
| |
Haha^.
This will be interesting to hear.
|
| |
Good for them, I'll be sure to get their new CD when it comes out.
|
| |
I quite enjoyed Hybrid Theory and Meteora, so I'm definitely gonna pick this up. My guess is that it'll be weaker than their previous two albums
|
| |
I'm not a huge fan of Linkin park, their music has potential to be better. sounds interesting though, that they're stepping in a new direction.

this has unfortunately caught my attention.

i have faith in rick ruben. he really has a habit in bringing amazing things out of an artist. it is though hard to believe that linkin park will make a drastic change to thier music. remember they said the same thing about meteora.
still i will want to hear this,if only to see where they will go with it.

Prog rock? Sounds rather interesting. I reall hope it's going to be awesome.
|
| |
am not 2 keen on linkin park, but it would be interesting to hear when it comes out!
|
| |
100 song ideas.. that didnt work well for Taproot..
|
| |
this could be interesting. i really dont know what to expect. there are a few bands who've started out as commercial rock bands and slowly morphed into prog territory, tool and pink floyd being good examples. admittely LP are a lot more commercial-sounding than those two bands were to start with, but still, its not out of the way.
on a sidenote, i randomly listened to hybrid theory today, it's aged suprisingly well!
|
| |
Well different can be good, but it usually ends up ruining a band, and you know something... I fear that might happen.
|
| |
Guys, Rick Rubin means nothing. I though he'd be the solution to Weezer's slump when I heard he was producing Make Believe, but he didn't help at all.
|
| |
this is one of those cases where it's a make or break.
if this record is fucked up, I'll never buy a LP record again. If it works out, then awesome I guess.
let's just wait until we hear their stuff before we judge. admittedly their past work wasn't all that good. but damn. we can stop hating on bands now.

i just downloaded Underground 6.0 it has a new instrumental and QWERTY and i got to say they both sound good and a hell of a lot better then the horriable Metoria
|
| |
I think Linkin Park is a 12 year-old's starter "metal band". At this point I have pretty much aged out of Linkin Park but QWERTY wasn't utterly crap compared that of the old releases. But one thing that did bother me about it is the lyrics. Sure the music has changed a bit, the lyrics have stated stationary at the. "Waaah. You suck! Waaah! My life is a waste! Aaaah". Of only they can get past that obstacle. They may just be listenable. Too much angst for me.
