Cornell Covers 'Billie Jean'

2006-11-09 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 14 Comments
Chris Cornell's upcoming second solo album will include a cover of Michael Jackson's pop classic 'Billie Jean.'

"I didn't plan on it," the singer told MTV News. "It just sort of happened organically. I changed the music quite a bit, I didn't touch the lyrics. And it's not a joke. I took a completely different approach to it, musically. It's like when Johnny Cash did [Soundgarden's] 'Rusty Cage' and people started calling me and leaving messages saying, 'I heard the Johnny Cash version and the lyrics are really, really great.'

"No one ever told me that before. Ever. Not once. This is kind of like that. It does that to this song, because it's really an emotional song. The lyrical content is kind of panicky, because — well, it's a pretty bad thing, someone coming and lying to you, saying you're the father of their kid and you're not."

Cornell began recording the album last month, and is currently putting the finishing touches on it.

I love MJ and hate Chris, but this sounds like it could end up cool.

I just think Chris makes boring music. But the way he is talking about it here makes it sounds interesting.

Don't worry, I'm sure he'll find some way to make it boring.

Are you guys serious? You think Chris Cornell makes boring music? Please. Plus, he has one of the best voices out there.

I've heard the cover live on a bootleg. I didn't even notice it was BJ until it got to the chorus, because he made it all dirgey and boring like the rest of the tracks on the bootleg. I like Cornell, but his solo work has a tendency to be quite boring - the production ruined Euphoria Morning for me.

Yeah I loved Rage, and I loved Chris with Soundgarden. Now Rage + Chris = crap.
