Gil Scott-Heron Dead At 62

2011-05-27 by Athom EMERITUS | 62 Comments
Highly influential poet and songwriter Gil Scott-Heron has passed at the age of 62. A cause of death has yet to be released. Gil Scott-Heron rose to prominence in the 1970's, most notably with his piece "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". His later life saw a struggle with drug abuse, but in 2010 he reinvigorated his music career with the critically acclaimed I'm New Here which was remixed and released earlier this year by Jamie xx as We're New Here.

was really shocked and sad when i heard this, but let's give it up: most artists in his vein fizzle
out early. this guy kept on rolling and released an album last year (consider that his first
album was released in 19-fucking-70. damn.); an album which not only was awesome but also gained him a
new audience and a bunch of acclaim and respect. not many artists can do something like that, and
while it's sad that he died, it's nice to see that he went out with a relative bang, artistic
integrity intact. RIP.

edit: sorry about the spacing. google chrome and all that.

You do realise that there was a 16 year gap between I'm New Here and his last album

what difference does it make? replace "keep on rolling" with something that doesn't imply a lack of
gap? i don't see what you're contesting; my point is that the guy managed to keep going and released a
great, career-reviving album when the odds were completely against such a thing. and that's worth more
respect than i can give the guy

I don't want to speculate (even though this is essentially what I'm doing) but the guy's had a long and well documented history with drugs. Not saying that he overdosed but maybe some complication bought on by years of substance abuse

Either way, gonna have to play some We're New Here tonight

Loved him on all the rap albums he popped up on, from Kanye's latest, to The Low End Theory to Common albums.....the man was a hip-hop icon and he wasn't even a hip-hop artist. Respect.

Very sad indeed. I've always loved his 70's stuff and was blown away by the awesomeness of I'm New Here and Were New Here. Gil Scott-Heron is one of the founding fathers of rap and hip hop.

What a beautiful, old soul this man had. I first heard of him, and had the pleasure and privelege of listening to "I'm New Here," early last year. This news is astonishingly sad, and it makes my heart hurt. Requiescat In Pace, Gil, from one kindred spirit to another. Thank you for the gift of your music. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
