Mastodon's Hinds: DT dress gay

2006-09-19 by Jom | 26 Comments
Recently, Guitar World magazine interviewed Mastodon's Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher for its November 2006 issue. In it, Mastodon "slam" Dream Theater, calling their bassist Myung a "little Chinese girl" and label the band as "gay" due to their leather attire.

Guitar World: Let me posit something: You guys definitely have prog elements to your sound, and yet you're exciting and valid — you're cool. Why do you think you're cooler than a band like, say, Dream Theater?

Hinds: "Because we don't have a little Chinese girl playing bass! [laughs]"

Guitar World: Yikes!

Hinds: "And they dress all gay, too. I mean, look at them: they wear those cheesy leather pants. The lead singer especially: he's got that really gay thing going on with his hair. Plus, he sings like a fucking opera singer and shit. Their hair, their clothes, their music... they're gay."

Guitar World: Now, wait a second. Are you calling Dream Theater a "Brokeback" band? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Hinds: "No, I don't mean 'gay' like that. I just mean... gay. [laughs]"

Kelliher: "I think what might make us 'cool' and them 'uncool' is the lack of egos in our band. We don't try to show off our amazing versatility every second."

Below are Mike Portnoy's comments regarding the interview, taken from his official forums:

"I wasn't gonna chime into this thread, but then figured I should just to help cool things off...

a) Brann (the drummer) is still a bro and has already emailed me apologizing for the other guy's stupid remarks...

b) Brent is simply a 'don't give a shit' guy who rarely speaks seriously and could care less what people think or say about him or what he says (this isn't a Neil Peart interview we're getting worked up over here!!) — but Brann did tell me he felt bad and apologized...

c) Re-read the question that provoked this response... it was totally a loaded question trying to provoke an insult towards us... if anything, the magazine are the real assholes for asking such a stupid question.

But really, stuff like this (and Metal Sludge, etc) can't be taken seriously...they are just trying to get a rise...

d) I could care less about any of this... I still totally dig this band...

The cold reality is: I'm very used to Dream Theater being ragged on by other bands for not being 'cool'... hey, we are not at all a part of that whole Ozzfest/'Headbanger's Ball' world.... so we are definitely 'outsiders' to them all... Plus I know we're not exactly everybody's cup of tea to begin with anyways... And, on the other side of the coin, the rest of the guys in Dream Theater have never even heard Mastodon, Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, Opeth, and 90% of the metal bands out there right now. I'm the only one that pays attention to that whole scene... So it's not like they aren't detached from 'our' world as well...

The reality is, we don't really 'fit in' anywhere... We're too prog for the real metalheads and we're too metal for the prog purists. That's why we all (including you, Dream Theater fans) kind of exist in this own little bubble of our own! And I've come to accept and embrace this fact....

And for every Mastodon, Children of Bodom and Blind Melon potshot we get, they are WAY outweighed by the compliments and respect we get from everybody from Rush to Iron Maiden to Steve Vai to Avenged Sevenfold to the Dixie Dregs to Megadeth to Yes, etc. etc. etc.

Different strokes for different folks..."

With or without these comments, Dream Theater > Mastodon.

I'm glad I didn't renew my subscription for Guitar World. That magazine is probably one of the worst I've ever read.

I agree. Dream Theater steamrolls Mastodon.
Personally, I agree with Portnoy. The magazine is a load of garbage and they were just trying to go for show.

And I sincerely doubt that Mastodon were really trying to start shit.

However, I do think it's pretty cool for Brann to e-mail Portnoy and apologize, just in case there were any misunderstandings.
Portnoy's a good guy and great drummer. The only fault is he like his wiggerisms and uses them way toooooo much. :p

Mastodon is so much better than DT (although not in terms of how fast the guitarists can shred, obviously). I laughed out loud at those comments when I read them in Guitar World, but I'm glad DT didn't take them seriously.

I don't know why Portnoy pretends the band doesn't fit into a "scene." They're part of the "overzealous nerd metal fan" scene with Tool and Opeth, as far as I'm concerned.

It's so true. all 3 of those bands belong in the "overly pretentious prog metal" band genre, even though I am a fan fo two of them. Can;t stand Dream Theater though. Mastodon, as you say, "steamrolls" Dream Theater.

I like how he talks about Labrie sounding bad.

I can dig Mastodon just as much as the next guy, but their vocals? No thank you.

"Overzealous nerd metal fan", eh? I'm huge on Opeth and Tool, but I don't care much for DT. Whatever.

This article is hilarious. I love how everyone just bashes DT randomly. Every genre needs a scapegoat, I guess.

listen to mastodon's cover of thin lizzy's emerald and then tell me their vocals are bad!!!

admittely the vocals in their own stuff is a little different, but it fits well.

as for dream theater, i can't comment, as i've never really heard them.

brent, however, is hilarious. seriously, read ANY interview EVER with mastodon!

lol, I have that Guitar World issue. It's not THAT bad of a mag, their lessons and tabs are decent. And on the topic, Mastodon write far better songs than DT. I don't mind their average vocals when the music is outstanding.

I hate all the PR crap. Just because a guy's in a band that's somewhat famous, he's no longer aloud to josh around and say he doesn't like a band? Granted, he could have done it with just a little more taste, but come. Why does idiotic stuff like this become controversial news? Get over it.

Personally, I agree with Portney. I'm no longer buying their magazines for this reason. Too much drama and commercial shit and not enough rocking out.

i agree is the DT drummer. dt dosent really fit in a genre. same with opeth. what the hell is opeth. prog metal. thats what i would say Dream Theater is too, but they sound nothing alike. Prog anything is jsut a diverse genre. mastodon, tool, dream theater, opeth, porcupine tree... none of these bands sound anything like the other. but every one of these bands is amazing.

I do. Most of them act like DT and Tool fans, even if they don't listen to all three of them. But the progressive nature, technical virtuosity, and intriguing messages of all three bands attract people who think they are superior to others based on their music taste.

idk when I saw Opeth here there was just a bunch of metal heads wearing like slayer shirts and stuff.

the only other Opeth fan at my school besides me(that I know of) is a scene kid anyways though so take that as you will

Yeah, that was a pretty shitty thing of Mastodon to say, I'm not much of a fan of racism of any kind. That was a completely loaded question though, and Mastodon said just what the magazine was looking for. Stupid question, stupid answer, but calm and controlled answer from DT. So, quite the opposite of what they planned, Mastodon is the one that comes out of this looking "gay."

Mastodon has no right to talk about Dream Theater like this. They should realize that every member of DT is a master of their instrument compared to them, theyre messing with the wrong band.

Oh also, Portnoy quotes that DT isn't party of the whole "Ozzfest/Headbangers Ball" thing... the only reason I started liking dream theater is because their music video "Pull Me Under" was on Headbanger's Ball.

Why not? It's the same as if one of US were to say that Dream Theater is lame but it's in a magazine. Big deal. He's expressing an opinion and the magazine set him up for it. Sure, he could've dodged the question but who cares? Brent's rarely serious, as Portnoy's said already, and Hinds admitted that Dream Theater are virtuoso musicians. You're acting like all the overreacting fanboys that responded to this on Blabbermouth a week ago.

mastodon are a way better band than dream theatre , when a dream theatre song goes over 13 mintues youd piss on your stereo to stop it BUT if a mastodon song goes over 13 minutes you dont want it to stop. and c mon those guys are hilarious. This Message Edited On 09.28.06

Flying V > Keyboard
And man, Labrie's vocals annoy the shit out of me.

I'm a huge Opeth fan and I don't like Tool.This Message Edited On 10.08.06
