Monkeys Win Mercury Music Prize 2006-09-06 by Horrorshow34 | 9 Comments | Sheffield-based Indie Rockers Arctic Monkeys have won this year's Mercury Music Prize with their album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. The album, which is February became the fastest-selling British debut in UK chart history saw off competition from the likes of Muse, Thom Yorke, Guillemots and Richard Hawley to win the award.
When accepting the award, lead singer Alex Turner joked ''Someone call 99 - Richard Hawley's been robbed'' before admitting that their success was down to ''good tunes, that's what we try to do. There are no tricks''.
The award tops off a triumphant yet hectic year for the Sheffield four piece. Last October the band's debut single 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' topped the UK Singles chart. Their album ('Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not') sold 360,000 copies in less then 7 days making it the fastest selling debut in UK chart History. The band then took away three prizes at NME Awards in Feburary before winning 'Best Breakthrough Act' at this year's Brit Awards just a few day after.
Although it hasn't it all been awards and #1 singles in the Arctic Monkeys camp. In June this year, Bassist and founding member Andy Nicholson left the band only to be replaced by Nick O'Malley of up and coming Sheffield band The Dodgems.

The mercury prize is the kiss of death for any artist.
| | | this shouldnt have been, its too obvious for the mercury, its a good album but thats not what the prize is about to me, its about making an unknown band bigger, who have made an awsome, thye may deserve to win, but i still would prefer lanegan to win, due to his sheer legendaryness.
| | | fair enough, if this doesnt kill them theyl have some life yet
| | | what is the mercury prize exacly?
best uk album of the year?

| | | Disappointment that they won. Although it is just a mercury prize. Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell should have won. (I'd say Muse, but they don't NEED a mercury prize, really. Besides, the award should be about giving prizes to lesser known artists.)
| | | The Mercury music prize is decided by judged purely for the quality of the music on the albums released during that year, fomr many different genres.
It's not based on album sales, popularity or live performnces on any level. And thats why the Arctic Monkeys won.
