In Flames Guitarist Quits

2010-02-12 by Athom EMERITUS | 81 Comments
In a statement released earlier today though their official Myspace page, Jesper Stromblad, the guitarist and last remaining founding member of Swedish metal mainstays In Flames, has announced his departure from the band. Stromblad has spent the last year away from the band in a rehab clinic for his struggles with alcoholism.

Stromblad's addressed his substance abuse problems as the main impetus for stepping down.

“I have decided it is best for me to leave In Flames and to quit the band permanently. The last 17 years have been a blast, and I am proud to have been part of this great journey, with the most talented and amazing people anyone can wish to have the privilege to work with.

I’m also the luckiest guy in the world, to have the BEST fans in the world, who have been supporting me during my difficult times. It means the world to me, and I’m determined to fight and defeat my demons once and for all.... and by the help from you guys, I’m on my way.

I’m far from done with music, metal, or whatever my direction is taking me, so be sure to hear from me in the future.
.… May the Force be with you!"

fuck fuck fuck, goddamn, no. Jesper really has a knack for riffs, and this is the most disturbing, bad, horryfying news article ever. Shit, I'm so sad right now

@Crysis - In since he was a founding member, I heavily doubt a new member will have them go in a better direction, probably even more mainstream.

Same, I fear the days of Whoracle and the Jester Race are long gone and the only member who I believe who could have turned that around just left. That's how I feel.

Damn...I know most people despised A Sense of Purpose, but goddammit if it didn't have some of the catchiest riffs I've ever heard.

I may actually...not be looking forward to the new album.

If he's been a main song writer maybe it's for the best that he lest seeing how the bands last few albums have been less than great. New blood could do the band well

He was the last remaining 'significant' talent of this band. Too bad, hope he overcomes his addiction of alcohol and Star Wars.

Well, new in flames sucks, so that won't change anything.

BUT, dimension zero (Jesper's side band) are kinda good. So, if he goes back with his old band, and start recording, he might create a new classic.

fuck, knew it wasn't going to be Bjorn, not that I really wanted to lose either of them. What's left of In Flames doesn't look too promising, will definitely be watching to see what Jesper comes up with in the future tho. Godspeed, hope he gets well soon.

Agreed with some of the above tho, really glad I had a chance to see them with him

They cancelled their UK tour last year cause of his addiction. I had tickets and everything ;_;
All the best to him though, the old albums are some of my favourite albums ever. It will be interesting to see where they go next.

Oh well. ASOP wasn't bad, but it (along with the previous two releases) just reeked of metalcore. In Flames' best days are far behind them either way.

And they never were going back to the melodeath sound.

"I’m far from done with music, metal, or whatever my direction is taking me, so be sure to hear from me in the future. "

May be some promise with this.

Maybe he wont feel any pressure to make mainstream style music anymore. Still sad though as IF was the first metal band I was really into. I had always hoped they would return to something similar to their earlier sound and I had always considered him to be basically the entirety of IF.

The only time I ever saw them was when they had a 20 minute setlist on the main stage of Ozzfest. 20 minutes on the main stage at the then largest metal tour in the nation is a disgrace for any band, they deserved better.
