Jackson Tribute Gig Cancelled

A planned tribute gig to Michael Jackson in Vienna has been cancelled and an alternative event will now be held in London next year, on the anniversary of the singer's death.

The organisers, which included the star's brother Jermaine Jackson, announced plans last week to hold a tribute concert in the Austrian city. Artists such as Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole and Chris Brown had been lined up to perform songs from Jackson's catalogue, but later revealed that they would be unable to attend.

A crowd of 65,000 was expected for the event, with tickets on sale from anywhere between €63 to €518. The event's organisers had expected Vienna City Council to pitch in around €600,000 in running costs for the gig, but it today confirmed that it would not make a contribution, due in part to the perceived lack of demand for tickets in the city.

A spokesperson for the Vienna tourist board added: "A cancellation is better than something that is bad and that doesn't interest anyone."

Promoter Georg Kindel blamed negative publicity in the Austrian media. "The artists were disrespectfully treated as B-list artists by the media," he said. He added that there had been problems with scheduling the event only eight weeks in advance: ''Maybe we underestimated these issues."

Jermaine Jackson took a more pragmatic view, stating: "Due to the short time frame involved it just was not possible for many of [the artists] to change their schedule so that they could be on stage in Vienna on September 26th. We have therefore decided, after careful consideration, to reschedule the tribute concert for my brother to June 2010 and to stage this very special music event at Wembley Stadium in London."

He finished: "We will hold the concert in the city that he himself chose for his comeback concerts but, due to his tragic death, he was not able to do."

Apparently Mozart & Strauss weren't available on the night.

It would have made more sense for Chris Brown to perform at an Ike Turner tribute anyways.

HAHAHA at Sludge's comment. To be honest nothing short of a Live Aid-like list of performers would really do this guy's musical legacy justice. Like it or not.
