11.17.17 | just saw it. it was fine. i don't have much to say about it. its obviously not as bad as the harshest critics are saying and its not as good as the biggest dc fans are saying either.
there is a double standard towards dc movies by viewers and critics alike (understandably so after zach tried to force so much heavy-handed politics and religion into man of steel, bvs, and even ended up in ww in a different way) where obviously they cant completely trash a huge female led superhero blockbuster in todays PC climate where you'll probably be called a sexist for it, i can't imagine reviews will ever be very good for dc movies that aren't subjectified by identity politics.
what i mean is that justice league is better than bvs and suicide squad obviously
and its just as good as wonder woman if you forget about the politics
wonder woman plot was even safer and more inoffensive than JL (which is multitudes safer than mos and bvs). if u don't read the comics the villains motivations will probably be frustratingly unclear, which is a trend dc has. lots of fanservice, not much to chew on for anyone who isn't a comic buff other than a decent action flick.
steppenwolf was indeed not a great villain, but he was less offensively terrible compared to many previous dc villains (enchantress, doomsday, lex, fucking ares) not to mention some marvel villains as well. i think they just avoided fucking up the villain entirely by picking a villain who nobody really gives a fuck about but leaves some good implications for dc to take their time on getting darkseid right.
at this point, imo, neither marvel nor dc universes have had a very good villain yet. so im non plussed about them focusing on the new characters and essentially giving the exact role he should play from a comic perspective anyway: a powerful unrelatable exiled despot who is actually pretty much a little bitch to darkseid.
so godspeed dc plz dont fuck up darkseid
otherwise you are on the right path, this and wonder woman are easily the two least offensively convoluted movies so far. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.17.17 | and marvel made a good choice by leaving their worst character in the best hands possible in thor ragnarok. i got a little antsy and bored by the final act of that one but it was taika and it was dope. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.17.17 | what dc should do is actually spend time with darkseids origins before even having him come in contact with the league. he has a pretty dope story and i think the only reasons villains have been so weak in both universes is that they haven't spent enough time focusing on them.d |
kris.

Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.20.17 | but either way ur entitled to your opinion, i think his visual aesthetic is pretty much made for dc films, he just tries to inject too much intellectual content into his movies and given the material that can sometimes come off real heavy handed and cringy at times. im ok with him taking the back seat with dc and just being a producer or some shit. |

They have some bad work, but then some really good work, whereas basically everything DC's done so far has been meh-to-bad. Seemed like most of the shots in JL used CGI *including* a lot of really obvious backgrounds, like when [spoiler] comes back and the JL is all standing in the city, and it's like in The Room when you can clearly tell the skyline is a green screen for no reason at all. 11.21.17 | Alright so basically I think the main problem between Marvel and DC comes down to characters:
Marvel starts with the characters. They build them from the ground up and make the audience care for them and understand their goals and mindset. It's not some brilliant formula or something that should be etched in stone for the ages, but they're exceptionally good at doing it well and doing it right.
DC has done this right from time to time too, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman I'd argue both are their best films because they start with those characters and work their way up. BvS and Suicide Squad however? Nada. All we know about characters like Batman and Harley Quinn are our preconceived notions of their characters from all the other pop-culture we've consumed. We're thrown into plots before we even know who we're cheering for, and they try to cram in exposition far too late in the game to make up for it, leaving us with a cluttered mess.
That's really just a simplification but I think that's a major difference between the two in general |
Futures
11.21.17 | so you need another batman origin story? no. batman needs no introduction. he's batman. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.21.17 | ok you see it that way but the way i see it is that the large majority of marvels characters have extremely glossed over origins, and the motives behind each heroes decisions get more and more ambiguous as the films continuously build more and more tie-ins to each other. captain america, thor, and iron man, are the only ones who have had extensive backstory yet. in the dcu superman has a 3 film arch so far and batman and wonder woman have both had multi-movie archs. and the other 3 have cameo'd. thats far more extensive than the set up for a vast number of characters that have been getting pumped into the marvel universe.
so we think they both have had problems and successes with the characters, our opinion just differs on which cases we consider the successes. |
neekafat
11.21.17 | Batman has no arch
Wonder Woman kinda has an arch
Superman's motivation changes every movie
I just don't get why a movie focusing on one character can't set that character up adequately, do your really see no difference between GotG and Suicide Squad? At the least, Marvel pays more attention to the arcs making sense in terms of the defined character rather than whatever the fuck DC just did with Superman |
Futures
11.21.17 | superman has an arch that makes sense.
mos understanding who he is and his place in the world
bvs the earth turns on him and he was to deal with it
jl SPOILERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS he is a hero who comes back more faithful in humanity
it makes a lot of sense and say what you want about bvs but that's a good arch |
neekafat
11.21.17 | BvS makes no sense sorry
Kinda fun movie tho |
Futures
11.21.17 | ignoring the rest? |
neekafat
11.21.17 | The rest makes sense, but when you have one movie in the middle of a three movie story arc fucking up the arc... it's not really much of an arc is it? |
Futures
11.21.17 | how? did you read? |
neekafat
11.21.17 | BvS is Superman is a moody emo kid who wants to beat the shit out of everyone in his way with no regard for the consequences of his actions |

11.21.17 | what? |

11.21.17 | Aight, clearly we didn't see the same movie so |

11.21.17 | "do your really see no difference between GotG and Suicide Squad?"
??? pure conjecture. gotg is much better than suicide squad. not sure what your point is.
"Marvel pays more attention to the arcs making sense in terms of the defined character rather than whatever the fuck DC just did with Superman"
hawkeye: a dude... who leaves being a superhero to be with his fam... leaves his fam to be a supervillain and GET THROWN IN SUPERJAIIIILLLLL!!!!!!!
spider-man: an literal child whom an ex-alcoholic narcissistic middle-aged man decides to throw into a battle with criminal super-soldiers, colossus, heavy artillery, deadly assassins, literally a witch, etc because why not who goes on to successfully wreak destruction and unnecessary violence and injury across his city which is ok with iron man but then its not ok with iron man and then its ok with iron man |

11.21.17 | like it literally took marvel 4 movies to tell the story of how black widow is a character that indeed exists in marvel comic books, little did you know. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.21.17 | im not denying that u could make these arguments for tonnes of dcu characters as well... it wouldnt be hard
im just saying that im willing to go over every character in the mcu whose motivations and development have been absolutely preposterous just to make it clear that marvel is just as guilty |

11.21.17 | seriously tho its kind of fun i can do more |

11.21.17 | I mean whatever floats your boat, if you seriously think that DCs characters are just as well-thought out as Marvel's in terms of the cinematic universe I don't think there's anything I can do to help you |

11.21.17 | Marvels tactical battle suits for each superhero have more character development than the heroes themselves |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.21.17 | it says a lot when your costume has more personality than your character, especially when every costume is just a michael bay military combat suit that gets new racing stripes each movie |

11.21.17 | 'We're thrown into plots before we even know who we're cheering for, and they try to cram in exposition far too late in the game to make up for it, leaving us with a cluttered mess.'
actually Suicide Squad was basically the exact opposite, it tells the audience who the characters are in intro scenes for a solid 30-40 minutes before the plot even starts, it takes wayyy too long to get going
and then by the time the plot starts, we know everything about the characters but the characters barely even know each other
making the whole movie feel repetitive and like nothing is happening |
SitarHero
11.21.17 | So I just saw the movie. What a mess. It also somehow retroactively made Wonder Woman worse. Yeesh. |
Divaman
11.21.17 | >The Joker from The Dark Knight? [2]
I know we've been talking films, but as far as villains go, the villains from the first two Netflix series were excellent -- Vincent D'Onofrio as Fisk and David Tennant as Kilgrave. |
Toondude10
11.21.17 | David Tennant is just a great actor overall |
Divaman
11.21.17 | True. But they also gave him a good character to work with.
The thing is, for both of those characters, I understood them from their own point of view, and even felt sympathy for them at times, even though both were thoroughly repulsive human beings. |
zaruyache
11.21.17 | JJ did a good job making you empathize with Killgrave's backstory. |
