That's a great question! I am not sure I can answer outside of the context of metal, as to be completely transparent, that is what makes up 85% of my listening. I don't see many disso-death records aging well. I think we are coming up on a time where that genre is going to see radical experimentation and improvement, despite how good it currently is. Conversely, I think any black metal project really branching out into uncharted territory - the swathes of country influenced BM bands, projects that are incorporating jazz, or even EDM - will age quite well as they aren't really mired in any period-related sounds. |

06.17.22 | what relative proportion of music will be made with guitars in 10 yrs time
Answer: That's tough to say. The whole pop-punk revival has really ignited guitar-based music again in the mainstream, which I am sure will continue for the next couple years. Also the whole Angel Olsen singer/songwriter thing is also picking up steam which I believe will make a difference. Maybe 50%?
what relative proportion of music will be made by solo projects in 10 years time
Answer: Another good question. The internet has really allowed anyone to post music at any time, and tech is making it even easier to do so. I would say there will be more solo projects than groups within the next decade.
how in the fuck is marrow of the spirit more 1able than the serpent and the sphere haha
Answer: lmao to be honest I haven't listened to either since around the time they came out. I just remember not liking Marrow AT ALL.
why do metalheads well weathered by brutality and dissonance often struggle with noise and feedback
Answer: I think it's in the way they are presented. Brutality and dissonance fit better into traditional song structures and the artists who utilize them, often make more conventional music (not always but most of the time). Noise and feedback are often using in a more freeflowing sense and I think between the fact that it's just screeching feedback and that there is very little to hold onto in terms of in structure make it very hard for them to find something to enjoy.

Answer: Me! Raw black metal is objectively garbage and I rate even the shittiest albums/bands highly. Metalcore's day is done and over and I praise it to high heaven. Most damning of all, I unironically enjoy Attack Attack! |

06.17.22 | “I agree I think, dissodeath is basically at the point where the Ulcerate worship is growing stale. 'Alphaville' might be a sign of weird things to come, hopefully.”
I agree, mainly because I never thought Ulcerate and its ilk were all that fresh to begin with. All dissodeath should take cues from brutal death metal in that if you’re gonna make nightmare noises at 300 bpm at least make it funky or groovy in some way |

Love Ulcerate, but yes I agree that disso-death is ALREADY getting stale and Alphaville blows my mind + feels fresh and relevant. More bands should take risks like that. In fact I’d much rather have the odd questionable song-writing choice or wonky transition whilst showing ambition, than sticking to a tried and tested formula.
It’s amusing that for such a supposedly forward-thinking genre so much of it is simply emulating the established greats. |

Might ruffle some feathers with this one, but i think it's two parts. First being metal fans don't like anything to dilute their metal, but what compounded the issue is metal's troubles with race and the fact that the music was being filtered through lens of hip-hop and rap, two traditionally black-led genres. |

06.17.22 | "what compounded the issue is metal's troubles with race and the fact that the music was being filtered through lens of hip-hop and rap, two traditionally black-led genres."
YES YES YES
I think genres like metal are (primarily) white enough to the point where, when an artist of color breaks out in the style, or artists of any race add in elements of music pioneered by people of color, there are bound to be white metal fans who criticize the artists through dogwhistles or even flat out explicit racism.
I think I could make a similar argument for metal bands that incorporate pop into their sound, and how that can lead to casual misogyny and homophobia (i.e., saying that it's "metal for little girls" or "gay" or something equally bigoted), but as someone who is openly bi, I don't even want to get started on that, because I'm not sure I'd ever stop. |

06.18.22 | "thoughts on michael jackson - thriller"
i gotta be honest, i don't really have an opinion on it. it's been probably 15 years since i last gave the full album a listen. |
TheSpirit
06.18.22 | @JKing92 - I absolutely agree with both of your points. For there first, there are entire sects of the metal community that are explicitly racist; it's their PURPOSE to be racist. that's not even mentioning the casual racism you see in other scenes.
And yes, the misogyny and homophobia in metal is also unfortunately quite abundant. I mean take any of the mid-late aughts scene bands with higher pitched vocals and tight cloths.... automatically considered by some people to be girly, or gay. Meanwhile, they listen to extreme metal whose entire visual aesthetic is based off Rob Halford, an actual gay man.... the math ain't mathin, lol.
