Call it a wildly unnecessary hobby, but one thing I’ve always enjoyed about music is re-ordering album tracklists. I do it with albums I enjoy just as much as albums I dislike, always in an attempt to arrange the music even better somehow. I find I get the most out of it on albums that have potential, but are either overinflated, fall short in a few key areas, or are accompanied by an EP/b-sides release with a handful of stronger moments than the actual LP.

It’s with great anticipation of Thrice’s 11th upcoming album, Horizons/East (due out September 17th), that I kick things off with a way to re-imagine their previous effort Palms – which fits the latter two of the above descriptions. Songs like ‘Hold Up a Light’ and ‘My Soul’ were obvious weak spots and were easily discarded from the original tracklist in this mock-up, while I also – but more begrudgingly – parted ways with ‘Only Us’ and ‘Everything Belongs’ on the grounds that they’re both relatively average versions of songs that Thrice did better on the very same LP. I then imported the entirety of theĀ Deeper Wells EP, which I feel is a much stronger effort in general compared to theĀ Palms tunes that I just discarded. Finally, I arranged them in a way meant to flow, dazzle, and rock your socks off.

One thing Palms lacked was a kickass starter, but ‘Deeper Wells’ lights a fire with its political lyrics (referencing Trump’s wall) and vitriolic delivery. The way its closing riffs transition into the intro for ‘The Grey’ is a match made in heaven; in fact if I didn’t know better, I’d say they were designed to go together. After two heavier rock tracks, ‘The Dark’ is a nice early injection of melody, especially with that breathtaking group chorus at the song’s conclusion. One of Palms’ most underrated tracks, ‘A Branch In The River’ takes the swaying rhythm of ‘The Dark’ and slowly ramps it up to that heavy, back-breaking outro. ‘A Better Bridge’ lassos that momentum and keeps it going with the song’s driving electric guitars until it finally exhales with a stunning classical piano outro. ‘Blood on Blood’ is ideally suited to follow that gentle moment up with it’s lightly plucked guitars, harps, and heartfelt plea to end violence. ‘Just Breathe’ is a nice mid-tempo track to pick the tempo back up without making the shift too jarring, and the beautiful harmonized vocals at the end blend quite well with the pianos and lighter acoustics (although that mid-song breakdown is still absolutely sick). ‘Stumbling West’ had to be the penultimate track in this arrangement because it feels like a march into the sunset with its thumping beat and forlornly romantic chorus. The stop-start transition between that song and ‘Beyond The Pines’ (which obviously had to remain the closer) is just an added bonus. By the end of this thing, Palms Reimagined ends up being a more consistent and free-flowing affair – with better songs to boot – and all without changing the record’s 10-track runtime.

The final result is as follows:

PalmsPalms - Deeper Wells

Re-Imagined Palms Tracklist:

  1. Deeper Wells
  2. The Grey
  3. The Dark
  4. A Branch In The River
  5. A Better Bridge
  6. Blood on Blood
  7. Just Breathe
  8. In This Storm
  9. Stumbling West
  10. Beyond The Pines

Suggested Alternate B-Sides EP:

  1. Only Us
  2. Hold Up a Light
  3. Everything Belongs
  4. My Soul

If you disliked Palms or felt like it could have been much better, I invite you to try the this re-imagining instead.

Love it? Hate it? Let me know in the comments!

I've done blogs and lists like this before, but I wanted to create a more consistent format. Hopefully people will find this series worthwhile. I realize that messing with the tracklist is "changing the art" or whatever, but I'm just seeing if I can create a silver lining for albums with either modest or massively unfulfilled potential. I'm not saying this will suddenly be a 5/5, but if you prefer this re-imagining by even 0.5 points, then I've done my job.

I'll have to check this out, I like this album a fair bit despite its failings

Never checked the Deeper Wells ep, guess it's time to fix that

Any version of Palms without Hold Up a Light and Everything Belongs is better off, but leaving the Dark on is sus to me; hamfisted alt rock Thrice at their worst, surely?

2. In This Storm
3. The Dark
4. The Grey
5. Blood on Blood
6. My Soul
7. Only Us
8. Stumbling West
9. Hold Up A Light
10. Just Breathe
11. Everything Belongs
12. Beyond The Pines

I absolutely hate the placement of Branch In the River on Palms. it makes no sense positioned where it is. I like it to start things out because of the first few seconds sound like a band waking up in the morning to play music and Dustins half-hazard vocals adding to that

I definitely thing you made a good choice with your selections but I just don't find Dwelling that interesting or well produced and then I could never lose Only Us and Everything belongs. Everything belongs might be in my top 4 songs on the album. I could let go of Hold Up A Light like you, but I think it fits really well with other songs and lyrically even more so. A Better Bridge I didn't add because .... well.. it seems like a joke throwaway track from Dustin doodling in his mind

Y'know I thinking the other day that I should buy this album but upon another play through was discouraged by the mixed quality of the content. Now you reminded me of the Deeper Wells EP and that I actually made my own revised track list using it about year ago. So might actually go ahead and pick this up after all.

Couldn't find my own list but I'm liking yours, Sowing. I just added Only Us in front of Deeper Wells and added Everything Belongs in between The Dark and A Branch in the River.

Love this rearrangement, especially importing Deeper Wells, which I think is a much better and more cohesive representation of the sound they were going for on Palms.

@JohnnyoftheWell: I don't think you'll love the EP, but you'll probably find it more enjoyable than Palms' lower 50%. Regarding The Dark, I actually love the chorus (and the cheesy gang vocals at the end), probs a top 3 Palms tune for me personally even if it's a little generic.

@Storm In A Teacup: Thanks! I respect the placement of A Branch In The River as an opener (I agree it has that feel), although with the Deeper Wells t/t present on my list, I had to put that one first. Gets me so amped up, lol. Hold Up a Light and My Soul are really tough for me to not immediately discard in favor of the Deeper Wells highlights, but to each his own!

@nightbringer: Glad you found this version enjoyable! Adding Only Us and Everything Belongs and turning it into a 12-track LP is a perfectly OK move in my book. Of the 4 original Palms tracks I discarded, those are the two better ones.

@BigTuna: I agree, Deeper Wells is like a slightly better version of Palms' overall aesthetic/goals. Happy to see you got something out of my reimagined tracklist, too!

Also is this a rival series to KILL or KEEP and erm erm erm who's your sponsor??

I was going to link you to some very old "sowingseason" blogs to prove that my album rearrangements long preceded KILL or KEEP, but they were littered with fraudulent redirects *facepalm*

I've got several of these! I actually did one for Palms but cut it down to a cohesive EP, this is an interesting alternative.

Would love to see your EP here! That's part of what I want this series to be about; not just me sharing my reimaginings but others joining in!

If I had to narrow this down to a standard 4-5 track EP I'd do:
(1) A Branch in the River
(2) Deeper Wells
(3) The Dark
(4) Blood on Blood
(5) Just Breathe
*Stumbling West as a hidden track if allowed!

This is really cool! I did something similar with Faith No More - Album of the Year and Helmet - Aftertaste where I took seven songs from both albums and arranged them into a new album. I called it Aftertaste of the Year and after listening to the whole thing I think it works really well as an album

Glad to see I'm not the only one who does this lol. I always felt like it was a bit of an obsessive habit and not something that other people did.

No sowing it is an amazing hobby. It can even affect my ratings of albums if i can rearrange a whole album and keep every song.

My best rearrangement ever was Scary Kids Scaring Kids self titled album. From a 3.9 to a 4.7

Absolutely love this re-imagining, thanks for putting it together. I actually really like My Soul, but might be in the minority there.

I remember seeing a re-ordering of Brand New's Daisy once upon a time...was that you Sowing?

Ha, most likely. Just can't remember if I posted it anywhere (most likely just on the review thread). I always felt like Bed was misplaced and that Gasoline should lead right into Be Gone. That's definitely more of a preference thing than an actual necessity though; album is perfectly fine the way it is.

There are hundreds of albums that i can only listen on my reimaginated version.
