Brand New – “Lit Me Up”

“Lit Me Up” is a simmering brooder; this moody slow-burn whose pinnacle isn’t a guitar solo or chorus, but rather a creepy, electronically distorted “when I grow up, I want to be a heretic.” The song is hauntingly prophetic, as Lacey unwittingly predicts his demise: “Lit me up and I burn from the inside out / Yeah, I burn like a witch in a Puritan town” and then ultimately concludes that “it was a good dream.” Many of the #metoo movement’s detractors referred to it as a witch hunt, so the Salem witch trial depiction, in retrospect, is uncanny and downright chilling. Then, the song ends with an equally spine-tingling reversed audio passage: “If so…you will be dead tonight”. This is one of the only Brand New songs that doesn’t “go anywhere” but is better because of it. One can almost hear the crackling of wood and imagine the flicker of flames dancing against the silhouette of an autumn night sky. Absolutely haunting stuff.

One nice thing about making a super elaborate Brand New ranking is that you can recycle the blurbs for your other ongoing projects!

So far mewithoutYou and Brand New are the only artists to have two songs on this list, which feels appropriate as they're my two favorite bands.

God fucking damn is this good. It's ending up way higher than expected on my SOTD list, it's finally beaten out Batter Up as my favorite on the record just today actually, so good timing (;

Such an incredible song, and the perfect opener on this album.

Ashtiel you should re-listen to SF for sure. Their whole discog for that matter.

Agreed BT. Can't think of any other song on the album that would have been a better opener.

Ash, have you not heard any of their other albums, or not heard any of them within a year? If not at all, then get on TDAG lol.

If I recall correctly you liked that Republic of Wolves album last year, and this band is basically the Radiohead to TROW's Muse, if you get that analogy (TROW basically copied BN's formula, although both are good)

ahh okay, I can see what you mean from what little I remember from Shrine at this point. it's been a while, I'll relisten to that soon as well.
