Not that I should be the all-judgmental on pseudonyms, but I’ve never quite understood why many a musician use a stage-name. Of course, there are a few exceptions, like the unpronounceable surname or the complete character change. Another reason could be to – for one reason or another – distance yourself from a famous parent. Now, I’m unsure that’s what has actually occurred with Elle King, but it wouldn’t surprise me. The now 26 year old was born Tanner Schneider. Her father? The great motivational speaker Rob:

Having split her time with some acting credits over the past decade or so, it now appears as if Elle King will tackle the music industry head on. In 2012, she released a 4 track EP (which included an interesting cover of Khia’s ‘My Neck, My Back’, as well as the banjo-driven ‘Good To Be a Man’). And just recently, she released her debut LP ‘Love Stuff’.

King’s voice will remind many of the late 2000’s soul-pop explosion out of the United Kingdom. Duffy, Joss Stone, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Paloma Faith all come to mind, so whether or not she is too late to the party will remain to be seen. Yet, there’s something a little more added, if only because she resides on the other side of the Atlantic. There’s a kind of blues or country vibe apparent, while also being rather poppy and accessible. Some or all of these influences can be heard on Love Stuff’s lead single; Ex’s & Oh’s:

I really hope she doesn't get heckled at live gigs.

Yeah, but you know there's gonna be that one asshole who just yells random Rob Schneider references at the stage. If only more people realized that a person's art should be looked at separately from their personal life. Believe me, as a Kanye West fan, I've come across a few people like that.

Very well said wtferrothorn. And a decent analogy too. It's going to be especially difficult for her initially, since she'll be playing smaller venues where 1 idiot can be heard. Once/If she progresses to larger venues, hecklers don't usually bother, or are drowned out if they do.

wow what ever happened to duffy? thats a blast from the past

A few false starts on a 3rd LP and a bit of acting here and there.

Wow just looked it up, cant believe its been 7 years since her debut. Mercy was everywhere.

Yeah, agreed. How time flies when you're having fun. And her 2nd album was towards the end of 2010, so it has been quite a hiatus. Maybe too long to stay in the mainstream public's memory.

was thinking atreyu cover

Unsure she'd be able to pull that one off, but you never know.

BTW, I don't mind the song. Nothing super special, but shows promise for a newcomer. Still think she might be a 3-5 years too late on this kind of music.

I heard this song a few days ago. Never would have guessed she was Rob Schneider's daughter.

And that's probably exactly the way she wants it GB. I feel guilty that I've outed her now.

I didn't realize that we had so many Atreyu fans around here.

Worst song off her new album, hands down. Smh, Davey, there's so much better stuff on the LP!

Besides that, she's basically Duffy if Duffy was interesting and had a cool voice.

Oh wow, this is the last album I thought you'd listen to Magnus. Careful, you might have to change your name to Soulstyles.

Clearly, I hadn't heard the album at the time of writing this blog. I'd heard 2 or 3 other tunes from her previous EP only. I was just trying to jot something down in order to get her name out there, as she is pretty unknown (to everyone but you).

Plus, a lead single is a lead single... with video and all.

Metalstyles

Now that is just discrimination towards video-less music!

DaveyBoy

Well, you - & pretty much everyone else on this site - show discriminaton towards lead singles. ;-)

I've always called it LSS; Lead Single Syndrome.
