The band members: Lynn Gunn, Alex Babinski, and Brian MacDonald

I like to believe that thanks in some part to the small but dedicated PVRIS fanbase here on Sputnikmusic, the young post-hardcore band’s music has gained serious traction in the alternative music world and signed to Rise Records as a direct result. Obviously, the chances of the four or five people who still actively comment on my gushing (if somewhat incompetent) review of their debut self-titled EP as a significant cause of label A&R picking up on the electric energy of the group’s distorted guitar wails and penchant for catchy songwriting is pretty slim. That being said, the band deserves credit where credit is due, and their focused live energy translates well to recording. When their inevitable first full-length comes out (soon, hopefully!), it promises to be a good’un. We got the chance to have a quick chat with lead singer Lynn Gunn following the band’s Warped Tour set in Mansfield, MA about the upcoming release, new musical directions, and performing through a medium like Warped.

We’re here with Lynn of the now eminently Google-able PVRIS with a V, as opposed to the original, eminently un-google-able Paris with an A. How are you doing?

I’m good! How are you?

I’m good, thanks! Tiring day, but, you know…

(laughs) I feel that.

Your album has been looming on the horizon for a while, and I know people on the site I write for are getting antsy, waiting for more news. Can you shine any light on how the recording process is going? Is it happening at all?

We finished back in January. We’ve actually had the record recorded for a while, we’ve just been doing some magical things with it. It should be out this fall. That’s all I can really say.

Will there be an official announcement sometime soon?

Hopefully soon – I’m not exactly sure yet.

During your set, you mentioned that the Massachusetts crowd was pretty big compared to other venues you’ve played to at Warped. Do you feel any sort of hometown advantage when you come around here?

Yeah! We definitely felt a little bit of hometown advantage today, which was great. We weren’t expecting that at all, though.

This is your second Warped Tour at this point – how has this been different from the first one?

We’re actually on it this time! We only played two dates last year. This one’s been awesome – it’s been really fun.

Lot of driving, though?

We don’t have to drive, ’cause we’ve got a kid driving for us. It’s a lot of moving your shit to and from the venue, though, finding catering and doing interviews and all that. Lot of work, but it’s fun.

You’re based in Lowell (ed. note: a city about 45 mins from Boston), and you were really performing around here a lot some time ago. Last time you were here, though, it was [on a national tour] with A Skylit Drive. Is there still a place in the Boston-area music scene for you, or are you aiming for more national recognition at this point?

I mean, we’re aiming for both – we’d still like to have the support of the local scene, but we’re obviously going national too.

You recently signed to Rise Records. What kind of stuff does that allow you to do that you couldn’t do on your own?

We have a lot more of a budget to make really cool things! We have a lot more, you know, push to our music – we have a lot bigger audience that our music is getting pushed to, and we have things like getting stuff pushed to radio, publicists, all that kind of stuff. The whole nine yards.

There’s a lot of misogyny in the music scenes related to metalcore and post-hardcore, and I know that oftentimes tours like Warped can exacerbate that. Is that an issue for you?

I don’t think that’s been an issue at all. I think that Warped is so diverse, with so many different genres on it – people have pretty open minds about it.

There was a bit of an uproar when your PVRIS EP was removed from Bandcamp a month or so ago-

There hasn’t been an uproar, don’t worry!

I mean, a couple people were annoyed…

People are going to get annoyed no matter what we do. We could shit out flowers and they’d get annoyed about that.

Although, honestly, if you shat out flowers, that’d probably be pretty impressive.

Probably, but someone would still find something to be mad about.

You released a new single last week. A lot of people who listened to it found your new synth-pop-ish direction intriguing. Are you continuing that kind of trajectory for the full album?

Yeah. The whole album’s pretty much similar production, similar vibe, but it’s very dynamic, there’s a lot of different kinds of vibes, stories and whatnot. You’ll definitely hear about it!

Can we expect more videos like those dating videos you put up about two years ago? Those were fantastic.

Maybe, I don’t know. We don’t have a lot of time anymore – we did that when we were bored one day. They were funny, I liked those.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Thanks for the support, thanks for listening, and have a lovely day!

We don’t have any new release to advertise, but you can check out their acoustic EP here: http://parisofficial.bandcamp.com/album/acoustic-ep

Nice job, Will! I love the flowers joke you made, as well as your attempt to get to talk about good ol' misogyny a bit. They didn't bite, but at least the chance was there.
