Today’s milestone 5th edition (who ever thought we’d make it this far) of ‘Sputnik Discusses’ features the first topic to come suggested by one of the discussors. You heard me correctly; every now and then, I’ll take a topic suggested by you and turn into a discussion column. And the man who is privileged enough to be the first to have such an honor bestowed upon him is Contributing Reviewer Arcade. His prize: If the column sucks, he gets to take all the blame. Thanks for the idea Arcade.

Of course, I could also say that this is the third consecutive column to be inspired by Dave Grohl and ‘Sonic Highways’, since that series of documentaries was all about commemorating the sound and stories of eight U.S cities. While there was clearly some overlap between those cities, each one was sufficiently distinctive. It got me to thinking about my hometown of Melbourne – Australia. How do we stack up in terms of having a unique music scene? I mean, sure, we’re the sporting capital of the world and have perfect weather (just look at those blue skies below, doubters), but what is our musical heritage and how do we stand out from any other city musically?

Well, apart from the sport and the weather, the two words that would best describe Melbourne are “cosmopolitan” and “multicultural”. There’s a real culture here that fuels a diverse range of music. I haven’t got enough space to list the pub-rock bands to come from this city, but Jet will take up the least room. There’s the punk of The Living End and Brody Dalle, singer-songwriters such as Paul Kelly and Paul Dempsey, while the multiculturalism of Melbourne has helped give birth to the likes of Crowded House, The Temper Trap and Gotye. Oh, and this guy was also born here:

Do you ever get that warm, tingly sensation of pride when someone that has come from your hometown makes it big on the world stage? No, me neither… But some do. Apart from the aforementioned multicultural trio ruling the world with ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, ‘Sweet Disposition’ and ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ respectively, the likes of Nick Cave, Kylie Minogue and The Avalanches (still waiting on that second LP guys) have made a splash worldwide. Could there be another in 2015? Probably not, but it seems a nice segue into the much-anticipated debut LP of transplanted Melburnian Courtney Barnett, whose new video does a decent job in showing what Melbourne’s suburbia looks like:

So, the discussion points should be obvious concerning this topic: Without telling us your exact address and posting a picture of you desecrating a local landmark, what do you believe your hometown’s musical heritage to be? If that’s too deep to think about, then fire away with who you believe to be your hometown hero when it comes to musicians who have made it to the big time. Those in London, New York and L.A. have permission to get a little more specific in terms of location, or else you could have a list as long as my, ummm, leg.

As they say at the end of those dreaded English essays: DISCUSS…..

PS: If things go to plan next week, I will have my very first ‘Sputnik Discusses’ franchisee. That’s right, a staff colleague of mine will be taking over the reins to provide a slightly different slant on this industry we all love. I bet you can’t guess who it will be!

It's time to represent your hometown peeps.

Sowing
03.04.15
I got the text alert saying my name was mentioned here again Davey

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
It looks like Arcade & Sowing are both on the text alert list whenever their names are mentioned.

Arcade, everyone knows that Sowing & I are the same person.

And play along both of you. Come on Arcade, hit us with some Eskimo Joe.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Well, Rolf Harris did become famous overseas. Someone to be proud of? Hmmmm. Oh, and you forgot Birds of Tokyo > Karnivool. :-)

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Haha. Does he just wander around the streets of Perth like a homeless bum mumbling something about "Black fingernails & red wine"?

Hey Sowing, I'll be honest mate... I've totally forgotten where you reside (if I ever knew)?

RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
03.04.15
I'm a Cleveland guy myself, so Nine Inch Nails, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Cloud Nothings, Dead Boys, Kid Cudi, Affiance, Mushroomhead, and the occasional MGK are all stuff I've enjoyed from there. I currently live in Akron, so The Black Keys and If These Trees Could Talk are easy favorites.

Rowan5215
03.04.15
Seeing John Butler next week, you jealous boys?

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
You could go on and on, couldn't you Arcade. Show-off.

Ooh, sorry RoundOnEnd. Don't take this personally, but I've been to Cleveland and I can see why you moved. I actually didn't realise NIN were from there. But The Black Keys & Akron are definitely synonymous.

RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
03.04.15
Well I only lived there for my first four years, so I don't have that strong of a connection to Cleveland. I don't mind the city, but I'm certainly more partial to Akron.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
For such a small state (area wise), Ohio has some decent sized cities, that's for sure.

Pangea
03.04.15
I know that Hoorn, the place where I live, holds place to the first winner of the Voice of Holland (Ben Saunders) and a semi populair(In the Netherlands) singer-songwriter called Tim Knol

After a bit of research I found out that Jacco Gardner, which has a bit of an international name, and the singer of George Baker Selection, who apparently had some huge dutch hits in de 70's, were born in Hoorn

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Tim Knol is the goalkeeper at Newcastle Utd, isn't he? ;-)

Thought you might be able to pull out Within Temptation or someone like that Pangea. I can't even pronounce where they're from.

Pangea
03.04.15
That would be Tim Krul ;)

I don't think there is an artist as big as Within Temptatioin in Hoorn. It's not very much what we have here

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
If you had to choose the biggest musician(s) from the entire nation of The Netherlands, who would it be?

Pangea
03.04.15
Do you mean by personal preferation or how big they are?

Also big in Netherlands or big internationaly?

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
The latter in both cases; How big internationally. Although, you can throw in your personal pick as well.

Pangea
03.04.15
Dj's are without doubt the biggest musican of the Netherlands right now. Tiesto, Armin Van Buren and Afrojack all have an huge international status.

Shocking blue was the first Dutch artist to top the hot 100 with Venus, I believe. Golden Earring had a few big international hits too

Mr Probs is having a big hit right now.

Caro Emerald had a few international hits

The Gathering is quite popular on sputnik, but i'm not sure how popular they are outside of sputnik

Like you mentioned, Within Temptation

I might have forgotten a few

03.04.15
Here in Indiana, the only big guy who was born near where I live is Axl Rose. I guess that's cool. But for the local music scene, I don't pay much attention to it. I should probably represent my hometown better.

SharkTooth
03.04.15
The vast majority of the music that my city(Dallas) that gets attention is country, not a lot from here otherwise that gets buzz. That being said, some of the better artists include St. Vincent, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pantera, and Erykah Badu

On the other hand we had Vanilla Ice

NordicMindset
03.04.15
Long Island has Brand New, Glassjaw, Dream Theater, Taking Back Sunday, BTMI, ASOB, From Autumn to Ashes, Public Enemy and Mariah Carey.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Pangea, I had a feeling you'd go with a DJ. AVB (the DJ, not the football manager) was the one I thought of immediately.

LOL Brostep. Surely, there's someone else. If you're not talking specifically Lawrence, how about the Dropkick Murphys!?

I had to look him up JWT. Boy, "rapping" had a different meaning back then.

That's what I'm after Let. Good call. By the way, San Diego is said to be fairly similar to my hometown of Melbourne.

Axl Rose was huge in the late 80s. Fair to state he had a tough time growing up too.

Gotta be honest SharkTooth, I wasn't too much of a fan of Dallas when I visited either. Maybe it was the county music that put me off. Still, that's a fair list of 4 you still put together. Then you had to go and negate it with Vanilla Ice (who I always thought was from Miami).

Man, GB, you could have gone on and on with Long Island. What a hotbed of music. Those final 2 alone are known worldwide.

Gameofmetal
03.04.15
I don't think there has ever been a decent music act to come from my hometown. Place is a graveyard.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
There's gotta be someone. And they don't have to be "decent" either. Unless it's population: 49 or something like that.

Lethean

misfits

DaveyBoy

The Misfits are from New Jersey, if my memory is correct. Now there's another place with a long list of available choices.

Gameofmetal
03.04.15
"There's gotta be someone. And they don't have to be "decent" either. Unless it's population: 49 or something like that."

our population sign says 600 but Im pretty sure that's a gross exaggeration. There's not room for a music scene.

SharkTooth
03.04.15
"Gotta be honest SharkTooth, I wasn't too much of a fan of Dallas when I visited either. Maybe it was the county music that put me off."

well that's the thing about Dallas, it's a terrible tourist destination. You can find anything Dallas has in just about any other city. And yeah wherever you go you can fully expect country music to be playing, it's basically our radio-rock.

Also I'll add to the list Wo-Fat, Usher, and Black Milk(he was born in Detroit but lives here so it counts)

SharkTooth
03.04.15
...and Meat Loaf

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Fair enough GameofMetal. Don't hesitate to go to the nearest capital city then.

@SharkTooth:Getting a little off the subject now, but I have been to other cities that are actually quite nice & good to live in, but do - as you say - make "terrible tourist destinations". I did catch a TD at the old Cowboys staidum though. LOL.

And don't mention Meatloaf to someone from Melbourne. He played at the AFL Grand Final (think SuperBowl) a couple of years back & was absolutely horrendous. If you have a spare 10 minutes or so & need a laugh, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZdiaFXW2U8

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
tresm87, if you're talking Minneapolis, I would have thought that a certain short guy who loves purple would have been top of the list!

Sniff
03.04.15
Umea spawned Cult of Luna, Refused and Meshuggah. Enough said.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
That trio will be difficult to top Sniff. Especially since your city isn't even in the top 10 most populated cities/towns in Sweden.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Fair call tresm. Of course, I didn't say we had to like those that had put their hometowns on the worldwide map.

Atari

Not the worst trio going around Johnny... Although, I would have thought there would have been more big musicians from Edmonton, tbh.

Jots
03.04.15
Oh probably, I don't check bios that often though

klap
03.04.15
also my hometown of Orlando absolutely dominates the competition

Backstreet Boys, O-Town, N'Sync, Matchbox Twenty, Mandy Moore, Creed,From First to Last, Alter Bridge, and some other crappy bands like Death and Trivium

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Don't feed his ego klap. They're like Australia's Alaska. It may as well be another country. ;-) Believe it or not Arcade, I've never made the trek over. I've been to most of Europe & most of North America, but not to WA!

Anyone come from your close neighbourhood Rudy?

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
You type faster than I do Rudy. Gee, that's, umm, quite the list. For a moment, I thought you were gonna throw Mickey Mouse into the mix as well.

"Fair enough GameofMetal. Don't hesitate to go to the nearest capital city then."

I'm finally moving out of rural Missouri to Austin this summer actually. Other than all the cool shit that comes with that, there's supposed to be a sweet music scene down there. Excited just to be able to go to shows every once in a while for once.

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
"there's supposed to be a sweet music scene down there"

That's under-stating it, from what I've heard. Would love to go to SXSW one day.

SharkTooth
03.04.15
"there's supposed to be a sweet music scene down there"

Great city, one of the locals said there's a major concert there every week and like street performers all over downtown

DaveyBoy
03.04.15
Well, if you count SXSW as a festival, it's probably the biggest music festival in the world now.

Slut
03.05.15

Slut, did you not read the last line of the column? It's in bold and all.

SharkTooth
03.05.15
I'm guessing you'll give it to Irving

DaveyBoy
03.05.15
I should start a book with odds on each staff member. Better yet, someone else do it.

I'm just waiting for Irving to come in with his hometown Malaysian hero.

Emyay
03.05.15
as cities burn is from my hometown. so is 12 stones

DaveyBoy
03.05.15
I'm a fan of 12 Stones, so I think that's cool.

I'll be honest with you though, I'd never heard of Mandeville before now.

Emyay
03.05.15
nothing remarkable about it, just a quiet little suburb of new orleans. i remember when as cities burn used to play at this church by my high school all the time

DaveyBoy
03.05.15
Well, it's probably got only a fraction of the population of New Orleans as a whole, so to have 2 fairly well-known bands from there is a decent effort imo.

I love looking up cities/towns/suburbs around the world.

Emyay
03.05.15
yeah for sure. i live in new orleans now, actually. still go to mandeville to see the parents from time to time. they're separated by one of the longest (if not the longest) bridge over water in the world

isarealboy772
03.05.15
We gave you all Foxy Shazam, (technically) The National, All The Day Holiday, Walk The Moon.... I think that's it in terms of decent bands that got semi-big.

TheSonomaDude
03.05.15
Phil Anselmo of Pantera spent some of his 8th grade year at the junior high I went to. The head football coach, who's been there for some three decades, said he out Phil on the school A-team (the best team with the best school athletes) but he stopped showing up to practice after the first game and never reported to the coach ever again. Phil hasn't ever discussed his football career so it obviously didn't mean much to him. Still pretty cool to me.

BroFro
03.05.15
Weezer's guitarist Brian Bell went to my high school. I'm from Knoxville, TN (I no longer live there, thank god) and Whitechapel, Shinedown, 10 years, and Superdrag were all formed there

someguest
03.05.15
Repulsion is from my hometown.

I think that's all that needs to be said about me.

DaveyBoy
03.05.15
Emyay, when I saw Mandeville on the map & it's location to N.O, I actually wondered for a second whether it would be quicker to drive or take a ferry across. The answer was neither. LOL.

When I first saw your user-name isarealboy, I thought it said israelboy & was wondering what you'd come up with. Forgive my dyslexia. Good ol' Cinci. I hope everyone's not like Eric Nally there! Or complete opposites like the Berningers, for that matter.

SonomaDude, you've probably pin-pointed the exact moment that Anselmo realized that he could growl with the best of them. It still freaks me out that Pantera started as a Glam Metal band.

BroFro, anyone from Tennessee who names a handful of bands and none of them play country music is doing well.

someguest, you're from Flint? You could have at least picked The Swellers... Then again, you could have picked King 810 or Chiodos as well.

danielito19
03.05.15
grew up in iowa... literally everyone here thinks it;s a big deal that they had dinner with a member of slipknot once. if you ever meet an iowan ask them about it, they'll tell you a three hour tale about joey jordison's fork-twirling ability

Atari
03.05.15
not sure how i spaced this yesterday, but Bing Crosby is from my town. We even have a theatre named after him

DaveyBoy
03.05.15
LOL Daniel. As soon as you said Iowa, I knew you were going to mention Slipknot. And there's a few of them, so I'm sure many people have met 1 of them somewhere along the way.

He doesn't count itchybutthole. This isn't a column about hair product.

I was actually gonna mentione Bing Crosby yesterday Atari, but couldn't work out if he was from there or Tacoma. I presume he was born in one city & grew up in the other.

03.05.15
Gonna become a hometown hero myself just you wait world.

In all honesty, one of my hometown heroes is actually my workmate and close friend, Anders from Forgotten Sunrise (the guy who's almost singlehandedly responsible for creating, breathing life into and keeping the momentum of Estonia's dark electro scene). I've learned a ton from him, and he's been one of my main motivators. We haven't shared fork twirling sessions though, that's been private time. Co-consumption of food without fork-related acrobatics, sure, but all fork related two-man endeavors still lie ahead. There is much to look forward to.

DaveyBoy
03.06.15
Hahahahaha. I was waiting for you to drop on by Magnus... Fully expecting you to serve up some bald, bearded Estonian metal-head as your hometown hero. But no, you have to give us electro, name-dropping & a whole bunch of bad mental images.

Metalstyles
03.06.15
At least I'm not sharing bad metal images!

Crysis
03.06.15
My home scene is nearly all hardcore, although a little ways away in the Massachusetts scene there is more metalcore like All The Remains, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage and the like. Converge are from Salem, Mass, The Hotelier are from Worcester, Mass and slightly to the north in Portland Maine Falls of Rauros are one of New England's best black metal acts. Grief are also from Boston.

Come to think of it there are a lot of bands from this area, just none of note from New Hampshire where I live.

DaveyBoy
03.06.15
You're on a roll Magnus. Have you taken all the alcohol that Ponton has left behind?

It's interesting that certain scenes will sometimes dominate geographical areas and I guess that's what Grohl & Co. were looking at with their 8 part documentary series.

I thought I'd do some googling for you Crysis. And I came up with a few born in NH: Mandy Moore (I know you're a big fan of hers), Ray Lamontagne & the big one you missed: Ronnie James Dio!

Crysis
03.06.15
God dammit how did I forget Dio! I'm ashamed now.

Mandy Moore I am not ashamed about forgetting.

DaveyBoy
03.06.15
You'll have to hand in your "metalhead" badge after that memory lapse. ;-)

isarealboy772
03.06.15
@daveyboy that mistake happens ALL THE TIME. Has to be the 5th or 6th time someone has read my name as israelboy and gotten all excited. Sadly I'm just a lonely Say Anything fan and don't live in Israel. Thankfully everyone isn't like Eric Nally... nothing would get done.

DaveyBoy
03.06.15
Does anyone in the States stay where they grew up? It doesn't seem like it.

As for West Chester, if Bam's from there, then as an extension, his brother must be... And he's the drummer for CKY if my memory serves me correctly.

Kinda glad I'm not the only one to make that mistake Mr. 772. LOL re: Nally. Although, a lot of cigarettes would get smoked... while doing a headstand, of course.

RogueNine
03.07.15
We've got a great live music scene here. It's where Cage the Elephant and Sleeper Agent got started. Now we're waiting for Canago and Buffalo Rodeo to get recognized.

DaveyBoy
03.07.15
Ahhh, good ol' Bowling Green... The city with no actual bowling greens.

StrangerofSorts
03.07.15
England does pretty well at this because of population density and the fact it's shit, which means more music.

I went to the Radiohead/ Foals school. I now live in Bristol, which means trip-hop (Massive Attack/ Portishead), a bit of old punk (Pop Group), dubstep/ grime (Phaeleh, Joker etc.) and general bass music (Kahn, Pinch and that lot are based here). The Bristol formula is pretty much to grab other stuff and add bass. Can't complain.

I have a friend from the Eliot school in London, and that school alone is responsible for Burial and Four Tet. I think Hot Chip went there too, and the XX were in his class. Mental...

Donchivo
03.07.15
Hm... deichkind, Absolute beginner, Slime, goldene Zitronen, Helloween, Gamma ray, running Wild, tocotronic, die sterne, Instinct of survival, drown in blood and many more... Hamburg /Germany isn't the worst of plaes

DaveyBoy
03.07.15
LOL SoS. Do you mean the whole country is shit at everything except music? The weather's shit? The cricket team's shit? The national soccer team is shit? Yep, you have a point. You could have just finished with Radiohead & Foals, but threw in some steak knives as well. Do we have anyone on Sputnik from Manchester?

I don't know all of those bands Donchivo, but I guess most German cities would be well represented (also) due to population density. Schwerin is sort of part of Hamburg, isn't it? If so, you could add Rammstein to the list.

Silvius

It is said that Darude honed and perfected his craft in Turku, Finland. http://youtu.be/y6120QOlsfU

Anyway, my soul resides in Stockholm - it's only a 10 hour ferry ride away - and all kinds of cool bands come from there such as Opeth, Katatonia and Abba

I think Reverend Bizarre has some sort of association with turku

AtomicWaste
03.07.15
I was going to say "nobody," but Taylor Swift is from a Reading suburb (not the same one I grew up in, but my mom worked there and I know the area very well)

I grew up with some great musical minds who are still on the rise. One manages a venue in NYC now and has quite a few projects including Bloodletters & Badmen (which is great) and Kam and the Matrix. Dude's musically brilliant.

A friend of a friend who lives in my current area is the drummer for the band Cheerleader who are on the rise right now. They're signed and releasing an album very soon so press has been bubbling up for them. He's a really nice and cool dude, so I'm stoked for him.

DaveyBoy
03.07.15
I really gotta get to Scandinavia one day. But it would have to be between June & August, that's for sure. Ahhh, Stockholm, where Abba & Opeth can be mentioned in the same sentence.

AW, I actually had to look up Swift, as I just presumed she was born & grew up in Tennessee. What strange name Wyomissing is. Add that to Bowling Green & I'm sure these people were drunk when they named these towns.

Looking into the future with your hometown heroes. We'll have to bookmark this page.

Napolesonic
03.08.15
La Dispute, most recently. Maynard James Keenan went to art school here. Anthony Kiedis grew up here as a kid. Al Green. Then the radio-rock/metalcore kids: Pop Evil, Still Remains, Sleeping with Sirens.

We arguably have the largest collection of Bob Seger fans, if that means anything. Frankly, in this state Grand Rapids lives in the shadow of Motown.

DaveyBoy
03.08.15
You may live in the shadow of Detroit, but that's still a fair list there Napolesonic.

Boy, the Chilli Peppers came from everywhere.

drake and nadja off the top of my head

there's probably more bands from toronto that made it big but thats all i got

DaveyBoy
03.09.15
Drake's definitely the current one from Toronto that gets a lot of press, but there is much more.

Neil Young, Metric, Broken Social Scene & Fucked Up are from there... Ditto for Deadmau5 I think.

DaveyBoy
03.14.15
I presume you mean Warren betlwedl. Since I see Stars are the biggest band from there, I think we can allow you to claim Detroit.

Can't say I've heard of them Alias. They barely rate a mention in the Sputnik database too.

no smith street band mention for melbourne, smh. so many great melbourne bands though. something for kate, cosmic psychos, tism, etc.

living in edinburgh right now though and the only bands i can think of from here would be boards of canada and young fathers. not too bad

DaveyBoy
03.17.15
Is that where you shot off to Rowdy? Hope all is going well & you're enjoying life as a Scot.

I didn't include The Smith Street Band just yet, as I don't know if they have truly made it "worldwide" just yet. I guess they've got some very positive reviews overseas, but I still think they're not quite there yet. Plus, I YT'd 'Depreston' because Preston is closer to me than Smith Street.

HBFS
03.17.15
yeah got another year over here before I head home. It's been great, thanks!
and re: smith street band that's fair enough. though they are touring overseas in the uk and america and everything so i would say it's not too much longer until they find some real success outside of aus.
but smith street is so much cooler than preston..

DaveyBoy

The words Collingwood and cool should not be placed in the same sentence.
