Today’s milestone 5th edition (who ever thought we’d make it this far) of ‘Sputnik Discusses’ features the first topic to come suggested by one of the discussors. You heard me correctly; every now and then, I’ll take a topic suggested by you and turn into a discussion column. And the man who is privileged enough to be the first to have such an honor bestowed upon him is Contributing Reviewer Arcade. His prize: If the column sucks, he gets to take all the blame. Thanks for the idea Arcade.
Of course, I could also say that this is the third consecutive column to be inspired by Dave Grohl and ‘Sonic Highways’, since that series of documentaries was all about commemorating the sound and stories of eight U.S cities. While there was clearly some overlap between those cities, each one was sufficiently distinctive. It got me to thinking about my hometown of Melbourne – Australia. How do we stack up in terms of having a unique music scene? I mean, sure, we’re the sporting capital of the world and have perfect weather (just look at those blue skies below, doubters), but what is our musical heritage and how do we stand out from any other city musically?
Well, apart from the sport and the weather, the two words that would best describe Melbourne are “cosmopolitan” and “multicultural”. There’s a real culture here that fuels a diverse range of music. I haven’t got enough space to list the pub-rock bands to come from this city, but Jet will take up the least room. There’s the punk of The Living End and Brody Dalle, singer-songwriters such as Paul Kelly and Paul Dempsey, while the multiculturalism of Melbourne has helped give birth to the likes of Crowded House, The Temper Trap and Gotye. Oh, and this guy was also born here:
Do you ever get that warm, tingly sensation of pride when someone that has come from your hometown makes it big on the world stage? No, me neither… But some do. Apart from the aforementioned multicultural trio ruling the world with ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, ‘Sweet Disposition’ and ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ respectively, the likes of Nick Cave, Kylie Minogue and The Avalanches (still waiting on that second LP guys) have made a splash worldwide. Could there be another in 2015? Probably not, but it seems a nice segue into the much-anticipated debut LP of transplanted Melburnian Courtney Barnett, whose new video does a decent job in showing what Melbourne’s suburbia looks like:
So, the discussion points should be obvious concerning this topic: Without telling us your exact address and posting a picture of you desecrating a local landmark, what do you believe your hometown’s musical heritage to be? If that’s too deep to think about, then fire away with who you believe to be your hometown hero when it comes to musicians who have made it to the big time. Those in London, New York and L.A. have permission to get a little more specific in terms of location, or else you could have a list as long as my, ummm, leg.
As they say at the end of those dreaded English essays: DISCUSS…..
PS: If things go to plan next week, I will have my very first ‘Sputnik Discusses’ franchisee. That’s right, a staff colleague of mine will be taking over the reins to provide a slightly different slant on this industry we all love. I bet you can’t guess who it will be!

Arcade, everyone knows that Sowing & I are the same person.
And play along both of you. Come on Arcade, hit us with some Eskimo Joe.

Hey Sowing, I'll be honest mate... I've totally forgotten where you reside (if I ever knew)?

Ooh, sorry RoundOnEnd. Don't take this personally, but I've been to Cleveland and I can see why you moved. I actually didn't realise NIN were from there. But The Black Keys & Akron are definitely synonymous.

After a bit of research I found out that Jacco Gardner, which has a bit of an international name, and the singer of George Baker Selection, who apparently had some huge dutch hits in de 70's, were born in Hoorn
03.04.15
Thought you might be able to pull out Within Temptation or someone like that Pangea. I can't even pronounce where they're from.
03.04.15
I don't think there is an artist as big as Within Temptatioin in Hoorn. It's not very much what we have here
03.04.15
03.04.15
Also big in Netherlands or big internationaly?
03.04.15
03.04.15
Shocking blue was the first Dutch artist to top the hot 100 with Venus, I believe. Golden Earring had a few big international hits too
Mr Probs is having a big hit right now.
Caro Emerald had a few international hits
The Gathering is quite popular on sputnik, but i'm not sure how popular they are outside of sputnik
Like you mentioned, Within Temptation
I might have forgotten a few

LOL Brostep. Surely, there's someone else. If you're not talking specifically Lawrence, how about the Dropkick Murphys!?
I had to look him up JWT. Boy, "rapping" had a different meaning back then.
That's what I'm after Let. Good call. By the way, San Diego is said to be fairly similar to my hometown of Melbourne.
Axl Rose was huge in the late 80s. Fair to state he had a tough time growing up too.
Gotta be honest SharkTooth, I wasn't too much of a fan of Dallas when I visited either. Maybe it was the county music that put me off. Still, that's a fair list of 4 you still put together. Then you had to go and negate it with Vanilla Ice (who I always thought was from Miami).
Man, GB, you could have gone on and on with Long Island. What a hotbed of music. Those final 2 alone are known worldwide.

our population sign says 600 but Im pretty sure that's a gross exaggeration. There's not room for a music scene.
03.04.15
well that's the thing about Dallas, it's a terrible tourist destination. You can find anything Dallas has in just about any other city. And yeah wherever you go you can fully expect country music to be playing, it's basically our radio-rock.
Also I'll add to the list Wo-Fat, Usher, and Black Milk(he was born in Detroit but lives here so it counts)
03.04.15
03.04.15
@SharkTooth:Getting a little off the subject now, but I have been to other cities that are actually quite nice & good to live in, but do - as you say - make "terrible tourist destinations". I did catch a TD at the old Cowboys staidum though. LOL.
And don't mention Meatloaf to someone from Melbourne. He played at the AFL Grand Final (think SuperBowl) a couple of years back & was absolutely horrendous. If you have a spare 10 minutes or so & need a laugh, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZdiaFXW2U8

Backstreet Boys, O-Town, N'Sync, Matchbox Twenty, Mandy Moore, Creed,From First to Last, Alter Bridge, and some other crappy bands like Death and Trivium

I'm finally moving out of rural Missouri to Austin this summer actually. Other than all the cool shit that comes with that, there's supposed to be a sweet music scene down there. Excited just to be able to go to shows every once in a while for once.
03.04.15
That's under-stating it, from what I've heard. Would love to go to SXSW one day.

When I first saw your user-name isarealboy, I thought it said israelboy & was wondering what you'd come up with. Forgive my dyslexia. Good ol' Cinci. I hope everyone's not like Eric Nally there! Or complete opposites like the Berningers, for that matter.
SonomaDude, you've probably pin-pointed the exact moment that Anselmo realized that he could growl with the best of them. It still freaks me out that Pantera started as a Glam Metal band.
BroFro, anyone from Tennessee who names a handful of bands and none of them play country music is doing well.
someguest, you're from Flint? You could have at least picked The Swellers... Then again, you could have picked King 810 or Chiodos as well.

He doesn't count itchybutthole. This isn't a column about hair product.
I was actually gonna mentione Bing Crosby yesterday Atari, but couldn't work out if he was from there or Tacoma. I presume he was born in one city & grew up in the other.
03.05.15
In all honesty, one of my hometown heroes is actually my workmate and close friend, Anders from Forgotten Sunrise (the guy who's almost singlehandedly responsible for creating, breathing life into and keeping the momentum of Estonia's dark electro scene). I've learned a ton from him, and he's been one of my main motivators. We haven't shared fork twirling sessions though, that's been private time. Co-consumption of food without fork-related acrobatics, sure, but all fork related two-man endeavors still lie ahead. There is much to look forward to.

Come to think of it there are a lot of bands from this area, just none of note from New Hampshire where I live.
03.06.15
It's interesting that certain scenes will sometimes dominate geographical areas and I guess that's what Grohl & Co. were looking at with their 8 part documentary series.
I thought I'd do some googling for you Crysis. And I came up with a few born in NH: Mandy Moore (I know you're a big fan of hers), Ray Lamontagne & the big one you missed: Ronnie James Dio!
03.06.15
Mandy Moore I am not ashamed about forgetting.

As for West Chester, if Bam's from there, then as an extension, his brother must be... And he's the drummer for CKY if my memory serves me correctly.
Kinda glad I'm not the only one to make that mistake Mr. 772. LOL re: Nally. Although, a lot of cigarettes would get smoked... while doing a headstand, of course.

I went to the Radiohead/ Foals school. I now live in Bristol, which means trip-hop (Massive Attack/ Portishead), a bit of old punk (Pop Group), dubstep/ grime (Phaeleh, Joker etc.) and general bass music (Kahn, Pinch and that lot are based here). The Bristol formula is pretty much to grab other stuff and add bass. Can't complain.
I have a friend from the Eliot school in London, and that school alone is responsible for Burial and Four Tet. I think Hot Chip went there too, and the XX were in his class. Mental...

I don't know all of those bands Donchivo, but I guess most German cities would be well represented (also) due to population density. Schwerin is sort of part of Hamburg, isn't it? If so, you could add Rammstein to the list.
03.07.15
Anyway, my soul resides in Stockholm - it's only a 10 hour ferry ride away - and all kinds of cool bands come from there such as Opeth, Katatonia and Abba
03.07.15
03.07.15
I grew up with some great musical minds who are still on the rise. One manages a venue in NYC now and has quite a few projects including Bloodletters & Badmen (which is great) and Kam and the Matrix. Dude's musically brilliant.
A friend of a friend who lives in my current area is the drummer for the band Cheerleader who are on the rise right now. They're signed and releasing an album very soon so press has been bubbling up for them. He's a really nice and cool dude, so I'm stoked for him.
03.07.15
AW, I actually had to look up Swift, as I just presumed she was born & grew up in Tennessee. What strange name Wyomissing is. Add that to Bowling Green & I'm sure these people were drunk when they named these towns.
Looking into the future with your hometown heroes. We'll have to bookmark this page.
03.08.15
We arguably have the largest collection of Bob Seger fans, if that means anything. Frankly, in this state Grand Rapids lives in the shadow of Motown.
03.08.15
Boy, the Chilli Peppers came from everywhere.
03.08.15
there's probably more bands from toronto that made it big but thats all i got

Neil Young, Metric, Broken Social Scene & Fucked Up are from there... Ditto for Deadmau5 I think.

Can't say I've heard of them Alias. They barely rate a mention in the Sputnik database too.
RIP Oderus
03.16.15
living in edinburgh right now though and the only bands i can think of from here would be boards of canada and young fathers. not too bad
03.17.15
I didn't include The Smith Street Band just yet, as I don't know if they have truly made it "worldwide" just yet. I guess they've got some very positive reviews overseas, but I still think they're not quite there yet. Plus, I YT'd 'Depreston' because Preston is closer to me than Smith Street.
03.17.15
and re: smith street band that's fair enough. though they are touring overseas in the uk and america and everything so i would say it's not too much longer until they find some real success outside of aus.
but smith street is so much cooler than preston..
