Queens rockers Bayside released their excellent 6th LP ‘Cult’ last February. A year later on March-3, the quartet add to the original 11 tunes with the 15 track ‘White Edition’ of the album.

While the first of the four new songs to be heard – ‘Dancing Like An Idiot’ – is nothing more than a decent B-Side that was rightfully kept off the album proper, it hasn’t wasted any time in drumming up some publicity for this under-rated band.

Coming complete with a lyric video (spelling mistake and all), lead vocalist Anthony Raneri lets loose on some of the young bands who proliferate the Warped Tour scene. “That’s where I get to see what the kids are doing”, Raneri tells Billboard. “At Bayside shows, I wouldn’t know what the trends are with young kids, same in my home life. Warped Tour is where you see all kinds of different people. These bands are just writing giant curses on t-shirts and selling it to a kid because they know the kid is stupid enough to buy it”, Raneri goes on to state. “You’re telling them it’s cool to buy a t-shirt to piss their parents off. There’s nothing cool about that… That’s mall rebellion… That’s not real rebellion. I grew up liking The Smiths & Nirvana… I fucking hated Guns N’ Roses. It was bullshit, misogynistic and fake rebellion – nothing is more corporate and commercialized’.

Headlined by the lyric “You’re basically One Direction if they all had throat tattoos”, Raneri and his band-mates don’t specifically name names on the lyric video, but their targets will be known to the detectives among us all. “We thought that it was just too obvious and not smart enough to put pictures of the bands we’re talking about and want to make fun of. So the middle ground is that we used all their fonts to write the words… In the background it’s all clips from movies – clips from ‘Idiocracy’, ‘Wizards’, from the ‘70s, The Three Stooges, clips that sort of told the story from the song”.

In response to some critics pointing out that a handful of Bayside’s (predominantly earlier) tracks also contained violent and misogynistic lyrics, Raneri did not deny that fact in a further blog post on the band’s facebook page… But he also did not soften his stance on the original criticism. “I wrote some songs when I was younger in which I was venting at the time… I am obviously a smarter, more mature and most importantly, more stable person these days”.

So, detectives... How many bands can you pick out from the fonts used?

"Raqneri and his band-mates don’t specifically name names on the lyric video, but their targets will be known to the detectives among us all."

would appreciate anybody on the up-and-up weighing in on this

If only Rosa ever had access to the Staff Blog! But yes, there are similarities between Bayside's song & Buckley's editorial.

I thought you were the detective among us Acad. You mean user-name doesn't stand for Police Academy!?

is...

I can't think of any misogynistic lyrics that Bayside have made, really.

DaveyBoy
02.19.15
Well, it's all in the ear of the beholder & there are a few tracks which fall more in the "violent" category only because it's unclear if the target is female. But the likes of Guardrail, Cold and Blue and Lifeless and Dear Tragedy could all be mentioned.

NordicMindset

Well, they're not really misogynistic as they are angry and violent towards those who have wronged him, and those people just so happen to women.

DaveyBoy
02.19.15
You could come at it from that angle GB, but (if insert rapper- or RedFoo & Robyn Thicke - here) happened to be gay, then their lyrics wouldn't be misogynistic either.

Not a bad b-side. I can't be bothered to try and figure out which fonts correspond to which warped tour bands. I read Anthony's response to this and although well-worded it really came out pretty whiney imo. You have to expect controversy (and maybe that was the intent) with this kind of stunt.

easily the worst lyric video i've ever seen

song sucks too

Agreed on all fronts WatchItExplode. I'm a fan of the band & a fan of Anthony, but he had to know how this was gonna come off when he wrote/said it. Talking about "real rebellion" & "fake rebellion" and the line "...not smart enough..." really comes off as rather douchey. So yeah, it could have been part stunt to drum up some publicity.

Why Snake? What have you got against The 3 Stooges... & Luke Wilson?

NordicMindset
02.19.15
I'm mad at Luke Willson because the Seahawks didn't win the Super Bowl.

the video made no sense and was random to the point where it was completely unwatchable

DaveyBoy

LOL GB. Well, they've probably both got crooked noses. Or is that just Owen?

But Snake, Raneri told us the "clips that sort of told the story from the song". Tbh, I don't think too hard about music videos. Sure, some intrigue me; but they're a very small percentage. So if they somehow keep me entertained, then they're fine by me. This one did for me, because I actually haven't seen 'Idiocracy'.

I loved the Idiocracy clips. I slept on that movie until a few months ago, but it should be required viewing for all mankind.

Back to the subject matter, Anthony describing himself as stable and mature, etc. worries me. The kind of angsy venom he used to spew in the Sirens and Condolences days is what drew me to the band in the first place. It makes sad to think a song like "Stuttering" is as much snark as we can expect from the band these days.

DaveyBoy

Thanks for the reco WatchItExplode. Full disclosure: When I first saw the name of it, I wasn't certain that I'd ever heard of it.

I'm not as concerned re: the band, because I thought 'Cult' was excellent. I mean, who do you think he is? Robert Fucking Smith. :-)

i really want to know which bands are referenced here exactly

SharkTooth

vocals on that song suck

so since you guys r worthless i went to absolutepunk and apparently they're talking about a band called "Attila" that i've never heard of

might youtube it later

DaveyBoy
02.20.15
Ok, ok, ok, I finally got time to do some google image research and have come up with the following deductions:

Attila & Thy Art Is Murder are definite targets, while Betraying the Martyrs & Motionless In White could be in there. I would have thought Emmure would be certainties, but I don’t think they are.

Gee, I thought we'd have better detectives around Sputniksville.

theacademy
02.20.15
"thy art is murder" is maybe the worst band name ever

DaveyBoy
02.20.15
But it's so Shakesperean.

More importantly, are they any good. Someone will have to tell me, because I haven't heard a single song by my fellow Aussies.

Metalstyles
02.22.15
Mediocre I'd say. Not something I'd regularly want to listen to, but they have some fun heavy songs and aren't outstandingly bad or anything if you ask me.

DaveyBoy
02.23.15
Yeah, I was a bit surprised when I saw that their album ratings here were actually quite solid. For some reason, I thought they were really bad. Maybe it's their logo font that gave me that impression.

Metalstyles
02.23.15
If they're in the same sentence with acts such as Attila, Emmure, and Betraying the Martyrs, they're absolutely the superior band.

DaveyBoy
02.25.15
So kinda like if I was comparing lmfao, Psy, Pitbull, will.i.am & 3Oh!3, then the superior band is... ummm... Ok, that was a bad analogy.
