I’ll admit it: I wasn’t always the biggest Sufjan Stevens fan.

When I first heard Illinois, I found it to be bloated and annoyingly festive, even for my rich taste. I didn’t bother to follow up much after that, conceding that he was “talented, but not for me.” I did give a passing listen to The Age of Adz – mostly out of a desire to see what all the fuss was about – but then too, the man’s compositions felt insane and I just couldn’t relate to any of it. Perhaps I was simply lacking context. Or maybe I’ve just lost my mind over the years.

Either way, Sufjan gradually (even begrudgingly) became a mainstay within my musical collection.

It all started on a boring, hot summer afternoon in 2010. The air conditioner blasting on high, I sat in my bedroom idly staring out the window. I had just finished up school, and with no friends around me the world just felt colorless and I couldn’t shake this sensation that it was slipping away from me. I had Facebook chat open in the corner of my monitor, pathetically awaiting social interaction, but nobody obliged. Cooped up in my parents’ house, it seemed like I was squandering the best years of my life. So yeah, it was depressing times and all that shit. Anyway, I specifically recall b

Kind of wrote this on a whim, just typed whatever popped into my head over the course of maybe 30 minutes. It's like a stream of consciousness experiment, if you will. Not sure how many of these there will be and what they'll all be about, but I'm almost certain it will have a longer life than Knott's Notes and fall way short of the prolific Chan's Plans.

really beautiful musings, sowing. i had a very similar relationship with sufjan. i remember bringing the anti-hype hard when everyone was going insane over illinois, and now sufjan is one of my favourite artists. just now hearing this new song and it's very touching. glad he's returning to his folksy roots because seven swans and michigan are my favourites

Davey your posts are far more engaging & relevant, mine are just rambling. But I'll gladly play the mentally insane Scottie Pippen to your Michael Jordan.

And I think Knott got bored with his notes by volume 2 or something, and then went off and started his own website so I guess w/ good reason.

I love this track so damn much. Really excited for that new Sufjan record.

Also, I was actually thinking about doing a blog on this track two days ago haha. Great minds think alike I guess ;)

Pippen to Jordan. Haha. Mate, I'm not sure calling me Michael Jordan around these parts is a compliment.

Haha Davey I didn't even think of it that way!

And Irving, I think it's imperative that the current sputnik staff pulls an Age of Adz and puts up like four 5.0 reviews for this.

P4K has been following him closely lately, which is great because I'm getting so much info about the new album and it's getting me even more excited.

Oddly enough, I had a similar first encounter with Sufjan - laying around in my final college days trying to convince myself it was worth getting up out of bed in the wake of a bad breakup with the only girlfriend I'd ever had (at that point). And then "Chicago" comes on, and suddenly, I am in love with Sufjan Stevens. Crazy.

Featured track is ok, though. Nothing really special to me, which is a little sad, but I can deal with that if the rest of the album is good!

Haha that's crazy dude, freaky almost. Give this track some time, I find it hard to believe that a Sufjan fan such as yourself wouldn't find it beautiful.

You can hear a clip of the title track on his website. Sounds almost as good as this.

"You're on hahahaha XD"

Now we just need Chan and Robin to emerge from the shadows.

This is lovely Sowing! I dwelled into Sufjan's Illinois last year and he grew on me so much. Now that's my most played album on LastFM. I can't get enough of it. The Predatory Wasp holds so much meaning for me.
