I’ll admit that my opinion of Korn’s music is pretty low these days. I haven’t even remotely enjoyed one of their albums since Take a Look in the Mirror in 2003. I understand that a band has to expand their sound after a decade of releasing variations of the same idea, but See You on the Other Side and Untitled were terrible. It seems that even the band knew that they were headed down the wrong path because they eventually released a ‘back-to-roots’ album called Korn III: Remember Who You Are. Unfortunately, it seemed to lack actual conviction and appeared to confirm that God stole the only decent songwriter in the band. This takes us to the new song, “Get Up”, that features American electronic artist Skrillex.
When explaining “Get Up” Jonathan Davis had this to say: “I heard a few of Skrillex’s re-mixes and really felt there would be a good chance that he would have the right sensibility to connect us to a new hard sound and direction, but still keeping Korn guitars and our vibe. We were just thinking of trying something new, to be honest, so I had my manager reach out to the Skrillex camp. When we got into the studio the connection was instant!”
The song is apparently due to be released on a new Korn EP in May, and I’m not sure if this is a one-time engagement or if Skrillex will collaborate on the entire album, but this is the first interesting thing the band have done in awhile. They’ve maintained the catchy choruses and guitar sound, but also took their music in a direction that is actually entertaining again. Of course, there’s still the questionable lyrics to contend with, but that’s really just an occupational hazard of listening to this band. Whether or not they can pull off this quality for the length of an entire EP is still obviously up in the air, but this is at least a brief flash of life from a band that seems to be struggling with what to do with their music.

Seriously though, pretty enjoyable. I haven't considered Korn relevant for... quite some time.

Much worse than what I expected.

This is okay, but the wobbly parts are the worst.

No, it's ONE of the things he does. Like I said, i'm surprised that people only seem to call him a dubstep artist

Oh and Skrillex sucks a fat one, is not purely dubstep and hardly comes close to redeeming the 10+ years of crap that korn has put out.
04.16.11
The kids that i know that are really into skrillex don't really know anything about music, so they all classify everything he does as dubstep because of the whomps and ridiculous bass.
Skrillex's brand of dubstep is pretty much all a gimmick that that's is targeting strictly dubstep douches (kids who only listen to whomp dubstep like Datsik, Excision and Flux Pavilion) because all they are about is a fat ass bass drops and as many whomps you can fit into three minutes.
04.16.11
should say "...pretty much a gimmick that is targeting..."
and "...because all they care about is a fat ass bass drop..."
04.16.11

The deal with dubstep is that its a genre that is somewhat bipolar in the sense that one side of the spectrum includes artists like burial, Clubroot, Pariah, Ital tTek, Actress, etc. which is a lot chiller and in my opinion a lot better than the americanized, in your face whomp like Bassnectar, Datsik, Skrillex, etc.
So i think a genre discussion surrounding dubstep isn't silly, as you explain it, but necessary to truly understand the genre.

The toilet might have been flushed on all the lesser copy-cat bands but the big/original ones like Korn, Slipknot and Deftones are still chugging along pretty well. I guess the real answer to your question will come when Limp Bizkit releases Gold Cobra.
04.17.11
All of them have evolved from their early nu-metal sound tbh. The only 'real' nu-metal band left is limp bizkit, although Korn's last effort made it seem that they were trying to revive their old sound. I guess Korn like to experiment a bit too much for them to actually stay within the nu-metal bracket for more than 1 album...

After this much shit did you expect Korn to suddenly become a beacon of original music and create something genre defining? As a kid I was a Korn fan up until Untouchables, so I'm happy they've put something out that allows me to recall those memories. Maybe it will just provide a spark to help them out of their creative rut, maybe not.
