Does it feel like summer yet?  Weezer thinks so.  Less than a year after the universally acclaimed White Album, everyone’s favorite nerd-rock band is back with a new single and – you know it – the announcement of a new album slated for a 2017 release.  Anyone who has rode the euphoric wave that has been Weezer’s unprecedented return to relevancy will be understandably hyped.  Well, at least for a few minutes.  If you’d like to hold onto that enthusiasm a little bit longer, stop reading here.

In what I wish was not typical “Weezer fashion”, the new single takes this band’s resurgent existence and, both forcefully and decisively, pulls the life support plug.  “Feels Like Summer” is an auto-tuned, repetitive mess – channeling the worst of modern pop radio and fusing it with the pompous sense of stature that destroyed Make Believe.  I wish such descriptors were merely a bout of frustration; hyperbole brought on by disappointment.  However, it’s best you just decide for yourself:

It’s clear that Weezer has not learned from its own history.  Instead of continuing to ride what they do best, pleasing fans and solidifying their own legacy in the process, they’ve gotten too big for their britches again.  I’m not against experimentation, but it’s got to sound better than this.  It’d be an easier pill to swallow if this were an outtake, or a peak at an EP even, but the fact that this is the lead single to their eleventh full-length LP is downright depressing.  Weezer, if you read this, I implore you:  it’s not too late.  Scrap this, and scrap the whole damn project if it sounds in any way similar.  I’ll take an album in 2018 or 2019, there’s no rush.  Do it for me, do it for your fans, and do it for your own legacy.  For the love of God, take your own advice from 3 years ago.

I thought I’d get a new audience, I forgot that disco sucks
I ended up with nobody and I started feeling dumb
Maybe I should play the lead guitar and Pat should play the drums

Fuck. Well, time to being the cycle anew. Weezer will be relevant (good) again in another 20 years.

Also, as someone who just had the shit kicked out of them for the past 2 days by Winter Storm Stella, I resent this track.

Wow, this is completely unexpected and not at all predicable after the poppy filler that was White Album. None of us could have seen this coming, surely.

Review hits the nail on the head. I could barely believe what I'd heard

At this point I'm convinced Rivers is some mastermind that's going to reveal in his dying days that all of this was some sort of calculated social experiment for one of his classes at Harvard

This isn't a bad mainstream-friendly electro-indie pop song at all.

The problem is that it's a mainstream-friendly electro-indie pop song.

I just don't understand why they consistently self-sabotage

They had such a good thing going between EWBAITE and White

Claiming that Make Believe was "destroyed" when you gave it a 3.9? :P

White wasn't that good in the first place so they already disregarded said advice

Pretty disappointing after the White album. Was hoping it wasn't just a fluke.

the fact they didn't announce that the new album would be The Black Album is a slight ray of hope, maybe that's still to come?

Well, they really dropped the ball. Talk about idiocy.

Didn't get hit my Stella, but we had over a foot of snow over the past 2 days.

I have a certain amount of respect for artists/bands who don't listen to critics and just do what they enjoy doing. Weezer is not one of those bands, however. I can't believe this Rivers is the same Rivers who locked himself away in isolation because people thought his songs were bad. The difference is, this time he should actually listen to the critics...
