Last week, I posted videos of the first batch of 10 bands from Day-1 of Australia’s SoundWave Festival . This week, it’s time for the Day-2 contingent, with more rock, punk and metal acts to satisfy your urge for all things heavy and live. For various reasons, I could not attend both days of the festival, and it was this Day-2 group that best satisfied me personally. Of course, posting all of the bands that I saw would probably cause a riot at Sputnik, so hopefully the diverse range of bands seen below is a fair enough compromise.
As per usual, a disclaimer must first be aired for legal purposes: SputnikMusic shall take no responsibility for any motion sickness caused by unsteady hand-held cameras used in the making of the following videos. The same goes for deafness caused by varying volume levels, seizures caused by blinking lights, and blindness caused by the brightness of security vests.
And just in case you were thinking that the line-up for Day-2 looks a little thin, then please take into account that the following list of videos excludes the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Fucked Up, Millencolin, Mayhem, Of Mice & Men, The Wonder Years, Godsmack, Tonight Alive, and farewell performances from Conditions & The Swellers just to name another 10 who played on this particular day. In fact, the order of what you are about to view, roughly coincides with each band’s actual set time.
While my day began with a brief glimpse of Californian post-hardcore crew Dayshell, it was quickly across to potential next big things This Wild Life… And they did not disappoint at all, with a near perfect set of their acoustic stylings that fall somewhere in between Dashboard Confessional and City & Colour. Despite Kevin Jordan joking to the Brisbane crowd that they were about to perform a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’, what followed was actually a cover of Bring me The Horizon’s ‘Sleepwalking’:
Next up it was over to the Sydney main stage for a huge dosage of cellos. That’s right, what would a metal band be without cellos? With help from vocalist Franky Perez, here is Apocalyptica with ‘Shadowmaker’:
One of the undoubted drawcards and highlights of this year’s Soundwave Festival was the moment that the (Greg Puciato, Max Cavalera, Troy Sanders & Ben Koller [replacing Dave Elitch]) supergroup Killer Be Killed made their worldwide live debut in my hometown of Melbourne. Here they are in front of a frenzied crowd belting out ‘Wings of Feather and Wax’:
I’ll be honest, in between grabbing something to eat and purchasing some merchandise, I was in the general vicinity of an All Time Low set. From what I did see of them, my over-riding thought was that they could actually be half-decent if the stage opened up and swallowed annoying (so-called) lead guitarist Jack Barakat up. Well, believe it or not, that kinda happened in Sydney when a storm hit and cut off the power to the main stage. Lead vocalist Alex Gaskarth decided to come out and please his horde of adoring female teens with a rendition of ‘Weightless’:
Oh, man… Forget being cool… Forget that 90% of Papa Roach’s tunes are mediocre at best… Guilty pleasure, anyone?… Sing along everybody: “Cut my life into pieces, this is my…..
Ok, enough with the kids… It’s time to get into some old-school heavy-metal. And who better to bring it that veteran Californian thrash merchants Exodus. Here the legends are in Melbourne with the closing track from their debut album; ‘Strike of the Beast’:
If Exodus aren’t enough for you, then on straight after them were a little band you might have heard of: Judas Priest! Rob Halford and his merry band of English cohorts just won’t stop breaking the law, breaking the law:
It might not quite be metal, but the man with the curly locks and big hat can bring the old-school when it comes to shredding. I was impressed by Slash back in 2011, but not exactly excited to see him again. But he and his band Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators are really clicking now and it’s a sight to behold. Last time I included ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’, so this time around it’s set closer ‘Paradise City’:
Three headliners ended up sharing the audience in the Day-2 batch of bands. While Slipknot would ultimately attract the largest crowd, The Smashing Pumpkins and Fall Out Boy would also have their fair share of onlookers. As expected, the latter were simultaneously sloppy and entertaining. In amongst Pete Wentz speaking a lot of gibberish, the Chicago quartet played ‘Dance Dance’ in Sydney:
And last, but definitely not least, it’s everyone’s favorite masked metalheads Slipknot. In amongst their 17 song set was the ‘Volume 3’ duo ‘Before I Forget’ and ‘Duality’, both seen here being played in Adelaide:
Ok, so there it is all done and dusted. Twenty live videos from twenty huge bands that took the time to jet all the way down under for Australia’s premier rock, metal and punk festival; Soundwave. If you’ve got any similar festival that heads around to your parts, then I fully recommend attending. You will undoubtedly have a ball and won’t suffer from the nausea that viewing some of these videos may have caused. Until then; Rock on Sputnikers.

In the context of the song by itself when Oli is screaming/shouting whatever he does now its fine, and the lyrics dont come off as cringey or poor to me, but once you slap whiny clean singing and an acoustic guitar over it it becomes unbearable

Thanks fellow boy of the Tuna variety. I didn't watch Slipknot myself, but all the reviews of their set were positive. I've seen Stone Sour live and I know that Corey at least puts everything into the show.
